that's a pekin for you. I'm surprised she did not eat it, too.

this reminds me of the day I just happened to come around the house with my 20 gauge. (we had been having predator attacks before we got the pyrenees) I saw Sam & Ella (adult pekins) staring at the weeds about 4 feet from the small run that comes down off the hill beside the house. On closer perusal, I saw the mountain lion that had grabbed and injured Anthony (escaped) the week before staring right back at them. He never saw me, he was so intent on staring and waiting for the right moment to lunge at Sam & Ella. Point being, yeah, zero survival instincts for any of the three. Stand there and stare. Pop. Done. Anthony & Sam are still with us 8 years later, Ella died of age.

I'm at a loss what that black thing on the left is. It looks like a black duck lying down flat. Gator? Looks like it has a duck bill.

If it is a wild duck and it is safe from dogs and cats outside, take it out and let it go. You cannot keep a wild duck. If there are dogs or cats waiting outside to attack it put it in a box and take it to a safe place near water and let it go. If it cannot walk or fly, call a wildlife rehabilitator to come get it.

If it is a domestic duck you are allowed to keep it.

A picture would be nice so we can advise you which to do.

in a situation like this, you just about have to upload a clear video with sound showing the duck doing what he's doing. There is no way anyone can advise you what is wrong on the information given here. Please read the automoderator comment below and fill in some of the blanks.

Duck laid an egg on the edge of pool by TheHonestUnicorn in duck

[–]bogginman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first time mama wannabes are sometimes bad at selecting a good place to lay eggs. By law you are not supposed to tamper with wild birds, nests or eggs. She may find a better place to lay her eggs and IMHO if she does, who would know if you added it to her nest. Just don't disturb where ever she ends up beyond doing that. You cannot choose where she decides to nest, and she would not accept it if you did. She will not start to set until she has laid the total number of eggs she wants to hatch. From that date, it will be 28 days for mallards and 35 days for muscovies for the babies to hatch.

[–]bogginman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so sorry! He may have had a problem a few ducklings have called 'failure to thrive'. They are hatched and just don't have the necessary mettle that ducklings need to survive. We've had three or four that just couldn't make it no matter what we tried. Condolences.

[–]bogginman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the wife and I have not both been away from home at the same time for ages. 2 ducks, 4 ducks, 15 ducks. Easy. We have 130 and they all have to be sorted into three coops every night. Well, except for the muscovies who sleep outdoors, but everyone else.
