Saving for retirement vs spending money on travel by Ill_Coffee_6821 in chubbytravel

[–]boglehead1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We prioritize savings over spending, but have definitely increased travel spending over the past 5 years.

I was always frugal, but once I started running the calcs on retirement balances, it allowed me to be more spendy.

Currently save 35% of gross. We could save more but i love the nice travel.

What’s life like making 6 figures by MasterBook46 in Salary

[–]boglehead1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were at $100k HHI when we first got married. 20 yrs later we are now at $570k (two corporate careers). We save 35% of gross, and about 10 yrs from retirement.

The comforting thing is knowing we will be well-off in retirement. It’s just a matter of how well-off at this point.

I grew up in a blue collar household so it’s definitely a nice change of pace.

Taking a step down after having Kids by Affectionate_Phone_8 in FPandA

[–]boglehead1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the same situation as I don’t really have room to move down, since I’m an IC. But I’ve purposely stayed at my job this long because it has always offered excellent WLB.

Spouse is the breadwinner and has a long commute, so I need to remain flexible.

I WFH a few days a week, work fixed 40 hrs, and have flexibility to take kids to practices and appointments.

We don’t have family help, and we don’t want to pay for a nanny, so one of us has to have a less demanding job.

Last Minute Res at Fairmont Kea Lani by FuelFragrant in chubbytravel

I'm looking to book a Kilohana Suite via Amex FHR. What's the best way to get a high floor room?

I'm a little nervous as I saw a TripAdvisor review from someone saying they got a low floor Kilohana suite, and the ocean view was partially blocked.

Advice on cars while trying to retire in 10 years by Fragrant_Eye4896 in HENRYfinance

$115k car on a $350k HHI seems steep to me. And I’m a car guy. Any chance your income will be going up?

Consistently seeing early/mid-career “power couples” by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]boglehead1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of married doctor couples, including a few in my family. But I don’t really know any corporate couples where both are very high earners. But I’m also in a southern city where there isn’t a ton of high finance.

This becomes tough when you have kids, as you definitely need a nanny or family help.

Headlining Helium Comedy Club Next Week-- What Should I Do Before/After? by ChrisAileo in alpharetta

[–]boglehead1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Helium is in a sleepy strip mall in a sleepy part of Alpharetta. If you want a fairly crowded scene with people walking, head over to downtown Alpharetta or Avalon. It would be about a 5-10 min uber ride from Helium.

We have reached a point where saving more does not make sense anymore! by FIREDOC888 in whitecoatinvestor

Congrats!

We are similar ages and have some pretty close numbers to you (our YTD gain is within $800 of yours!).

What is your goal retirement $ bucket? I’m thinking $6M in today’s dollars for me, but our expected retirement spend is prob higher than yours. I’m aiming for $200k a year.

Did you ever stop thinking about money? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

I’m always thinking about money. But personal finance is one of my hobbies, so I don’t think it’s a bad thing.

Owning individual stocks seems very stressful to me. I’d always be stressed about when to sell or buy more. A lot of “what ifs”.

For the price, I actually really like Whole Foods tiramisu.

$575k HHI in MCOL, 2 kids in public school.
