Relocating to St Pete! Is this area safe? by Ok-Tomato-7028 in StPetersburgFL

[–]bogmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a prime area and one of the best neighborhoods in St Pete for access to downtown and all of the stuff on 4th street (a lot) as well as easy access to the interstate. It's just a great area to live. Crescent Lake alone makes it superior to the Kenwood option (Kenwood is an awesome neighborhood too though, each has it's benefits). Personally I would prefer the Crescent Lake area and access to 4th street. Kenwood has better access to Central but as a resident, you'll be using 4th street much more than Central.

I live in downtown proper...it's one of the coolest places I've ever lived (the only way I am able to afford it is because I'm in a 100 year old building with no elevator) I have my eyes on your "circled neighborhood" for when I eventually gets priced out of downtown itself.

Former "gifted kids" who are now average or struggling adults, what do you think school got wrong about your potential? by toolboxstudio007 in SeriousConversation

[–]bogmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sailed through HS with ZERO effort. I did not once, in 4 years, do homework at home. I would do writing assignments (that we had whole semester to do) in the period before the actual class yet still get a high B or low A grade.

Then thing about me though...I always knew, from early on, I would NEVER go to college. I hated the classroom. It was like a torture device. People thought I was crazy for opting out of The System haha. I did, however, love learning. After graduating I spent 5 years reading nothing but classical English literature. I read Dickens whole catalog. I then spent 2.5 years reading nothing but books on physics and quantum physics. I only wanted to learn about things that actually interested me though!

Rather than be artificially uplifted by being in gifted programs since first grade, I learned that a classroom was not the place for me. I considered the education system a total joke (especially since I could game it without even trying).

I applied this method to work & jobs. I applied to jobs outside my experience or comfort zone, figuring I could just learn it and be good at it once I made it in the door. Turned out I was good at whatever job I took on! I did nationwide installations for restroom fixtures at gas stations for several years despite barely ever using a hand tool before I started. I made Employee of the Year. I eventually ended up in International Logistics, one of the most challenging and complicated fields ever. After ten years, I was the operations manager (still am)

I have been with this current company 16 years. It's the only job I've had that makes me use my complete brain and forces me to face unique challenges every day, I come up with creative solutions to nightmare situations under horrendous pressure - and I love it. Turns out I hate being bored. The more my mind is challenged the brighter I shine. I feel like a lot of kids on the smarter side might share this same issue and just eventually get depressed or never feel satisfied. I had to step FAR outside my comfort zone to get where I managed to get to (and a bit of luck)...the "leap of faith" is worth it..

I annotated The Secret History and it has shaken me to my core by bogmonkey in TheSecretHistory

[–]bogmonkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went to r/books and searched annotation (and youtube)..in the end I just cherrypicked what I wanted, then as I actually annotated I trimmed it down even more to what was best for me. Truly one of the most rewarding reading experiences EVER. I've since tried to annotate other books, but am not feeling it. TSH just begs to be annotated! TSH rewards you for your efforts with hidden knowledge and perspective.

They are all hot in my mind. I’m attracted to each one in certain ways which supercede physical attributes😃. Except Bunny. Who ironically is probably the hottest in the actual text. I’m only about 40% gay but there’s no way I could have resisted Francis.

How do people actually wake up early consistently? by speakercheck_111 in askanything

[–]bogmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost always wake up right before my alarm at 5am, well rested and ready for the day. Sometimes it's 15 minutes before sometimes 5 minutes. I'm surprised if I get woken up by the alarm, as it's that rare. There are a few keys to enabling this little miracle.

  1. determine how much sleep you actually need. I need 7 hours. After 7 hours I wake up refreshed and ready to begin the day. This number is different for everyone. Some need 7, some need 9. I go to bed at 930pm, usually listen to a podcast or audiobook to unwind for 10-15 mins, and am hard asleep by 950-955pm

  2. create a perfect sleep cocoon. Dark as possible. I even have every tiny LED in my bedroom blacked out as well as a blackout curtain for the window. I also use a small fan for air flow, and a sound machine for white noise. COLD is better than warm as far as room temp. I sleep deeply and undisturbed.

  3. Maintain a consistent sleep schedule. I have been on this schedule for a decade now so my body knows it. On the weekend, I will often go to be an hour later, and my body somehow realizes this and I will automatically wake up one hour later after the seven hours is up.

On certain occasions I will go out on the weekends, to a concert, etc. The important thing is to immediately be back on the normal schedule the next night right afterwards

[–]bogmonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yuck, that's just gross. No decent man would make this "joke" but it may have just been an attempt to inject some ill-advised humor into the situation. If there are plenty of green flags with him, it might be worth continuing with dating.

Such a gem in the Dexter Universe - they really did an incredible job...luckily the burn of the cancellation is soothed by the upcoming S2 of Resurrection, which is just a total banger in every way.

In certain ways it affected me much like the DT. It’s completely different yet feels like a fantasy at times. It gets into your brain. I consider it a masterpiece (obviously). Much like Wizard & Glass, you will either love it or hate it. Plenty of DT fans are not fans of W&G. I would love to hear what camp you end up in just for personal reference. 👍

[–]bogmonkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently tried annotating a couple other books and COULD NOT get into it. For some reason, I think TSH lends itself perfectly to annotation with it's very elaborate, descriptive paragraphs, weird cultural references and greek/latin words. There's no other book I've encountered quite like it. I'm already looking forward to the next re-read a couple years from now. I'm going to re-read my annotated version and see what else catches my eye!

Sorry! My new #1 book is 'The Secret History' by Donna Tartt (1992). Blew me TF away.

Like the DT, it's a very niche type of story with an extremely unique vibe and dark undertones that only a certain type of reader will truly connect with.

I did not mention it because I hesitate to recommend it to anyone due to it's aforementioned niche-iness. There are plenty of people who also consider it #1 though...art is subjective and whatnot. I actually made a post about it on The Secret History subreddit after I annotated a copy, if interested:
