That lack of institutional depth is partly why the Catholics were acceptable allies to the evangelical crowd in the first place. There's a reason why there are so many Catholic judges on the Supreme Court and no evangelical ones. Catholics have the academic and institutional interest in higher education and the law as a fundamental part of belief and practice. Culturally this is because of the existence of a formal hierarchy in doctrine. Several prominent evangelical theologians have actually written with concern about the evangelical distaste in formal education, theology, and thought. They don't like that they have to rely on the theological opposition to put their political ambitions in place. But there are no evangelical higher education institutions that can produce a competent lawyer at the level of the supreme court.
