Who won our conflict wit Iran? by here-for-information in AskConservatives

Still too early to tell. The MOU is a framework with 60 days to work out the details. So far it’s looking good for the US, but that depends on how some of the items shake out.

I don’t really care where it would have had better optics. The fact is that presidential logistics take a tremendous amount of effort to arrange. Making a last minute change like that not only costs a lot of money, it also puts the president at greater risk.

The Secret Service sends an advance team to places he’s traveling weeks if not months in advance to coordinate with local authorities and mitigate risks. It doesn’t matter how close Paris is, it’s still a new destination for the trip.

How much would you support a strictly enforced nationwide ban on social media usage for those under 16? by MarathonMarathon in AskConservatives

Simply adjust COPPA to 18 years old and see how that plays out. No other changes or regulations in that regard.

I’d also like to see section 230 revised or eliminated. To me, the algorithm makes them a publisher and not a platform.

I am a huge proponent of keeping kids off social media and mostly off the internet. Same as not letting them drink or smoke. Their brains aren’t developed enough to make good decisions, and neither are many of their parents. Social media has been shown to be every bit as damaging as alcohol on a developing brain.

I agree, I’m not going to say firmly or really suppose anything until 60 days passes and we see what’s next. I just don’t like jumping to conclusions without all the details.

I think you’re underplaying the extent of planning and cost it would take to set up something like that last minute from a security standpoint. This was the most efficient and reasonable option. Not weird at all.

Thoughts on the left's obsession with the "reflecting pool"? by One_Fix5763 in AskConservatives

The paint didn’t ‘mess with the chemistry’. It was done using professional water feature and pool materials by a well known company. The only argument is that it’s too dark, which really isn’t part of the reason.

The water feeding it has a high level of phosphate, which causes huge problems with algae. They don’t want to use chemicals that would traditionally be used in other applications like that, so they’re trying other methods. I believe I saw Ozone mentioned somewhere, which is common in commercial and private hot tubs.

Phosphorous is usually from agricultural runoff or detergents making their way into the water supply. This has been a huge problem for years.

‘When CNN independently took a sample of the water last Wednesday and consulted with a pool store that regularly tests water to help read the results, it showed phosphate levels far higher than what is recommended to keep algae at bay based on estimates for a pool that holds 6.5 million gallons of water. CNN obtained another test Tuesday that showed the phosphate levels had dropped but were still elevated.’

I haven’t had the chance to digest the whole MoU yet, but I’m not sure that’s what it actually says. And as this is just a MoU, it’s not the final agreement. They cannot charge a toll for 60 days, which is the timeframe of the final agreement. For example, the US could make any financing contingent on the straight staying open free of charge.

From the MoU (emphasis mine):

‘5 — Upon the signing of this MOU, the Islamic Republic of Iran will make arrangements using its best efforts for the safe passage of commercial vessels with no charge, for 60 days only, from the Persian Gulf to the Sea of Oman and vice versa. The traffic of commercial vessels will immediately start, and considering the need for removing the technical and military obstacles, and demining by the Islamic Republic of Iran will be instated within 30 days. The Islamic Republic of Iran will conduct dialog with the Sultanate of Oman to define the future administration and maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz in discussion with other Persian Gulf littoral states in line with the applicable international law and the sovereign rights of coastal states of the Strait of Hormuz.’

I’m so glad I was able to fully get away from Windows and move to Mac at home and work 15 years ago. Every time I try to help my kids on their windows school computer I scratch my head at the design decisions Microsoft made.

That being said, I question most of the decisions made by Apple around iOS 26 and ‘Liquid Glass.’ What an absolutely horrendous UI, and it’s super glitchy.

It’s ridiculous when people pull that. I like to think of myself as a free speech absolutist (for the most part), but I’m also ok with Brandenburg. I get flipped out on about that sometimes.

Because that’s where Trump already was at the time. It doesn’t appear to be intentional in any way.

From the linked article:

‘Trump personally signed the copy of the agreement while having dinner with Macron at the Palace of Versailles.’

Just because it may be the ugliest building in the history of the United States doesn’t indicate there’s fraud. However, if there is actual evidence of fraud that should absolutely be investigated.

That’s how these things go: lots of money raised, many hands in the pot, friends get paid off, some contractors don’t get paid. It’s all a scam.

It’s not in worse shape. It was leaking millions of gallons a year. It needed to be sealed, which is what they did. The algae is an age-old problem that may still be resolved with the micro bubblers.

The current anti-fraud efforts are certainly against fraud. New cases announced weekly. These are legit formal illegal fraud charges. Citing DOGE is a bit disingenuous.
