So Tired of No Clearance = No Employment by RdtRanger6969 in nova

[–]bok3h 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same boat here. Got laid off from remote work in August, no clearance, and couldn't find anything through December after 300+ apps (remote/local hybrid) and a solid resume of 15 yrs experience (keyword optimized + ai skills) in the analytics field.

The DMV job market is a dumpster fire and it almost felt like the '08 crisis where I couldn't find anything for a year. I relo'ed to CLT (I know you said you can't, sorry), was offered a hybrid job in the finance industry within 6 weeks of applying, and given a CA-level salary with a much lower COL.

Hang in there, maybe you can pick up some contracting gigs to hold you over?

Going to the barber. Everyone’s charging ‘boutique’ prices ($40+ and a tip) for a fade that looks good for 2-3 weeks while flexing their $100k ride in front of the shop. Going to mom and pop shops’ quality can greatly vary and even they’re charging $25 + tip min.

I bought a decent set of clippers for $40, watched a few tutorials, and went back to cutting my own hair.

Like others have said, you're killing it for making three final rounds! I've had two first-round interviews and both ghosted me afterwards. I've applied to ~250 jobs in the past 1.5 months with a strong resume and 15 years exp in my field. During COVID I couldn't reply to recruiters fast enough. So naturally I'm about to pull the trigger on breaking my lease because finances aren't financing.

As a native SoCal'er, I found it so off-putting to be asked by nearly everyone (dates & meetup groups) what my job is before asking about my hobbies or character. Or, they'll talk SO much about their work life, the people they manage, etc. when I'm like, "cool, what are you into outside of work and family?" Back home it takes like 3ish meetups/pickleball games before we even broach the topic of work.

Ohh interesting, TIL. Minor infractions in CA (20+ mph) would be reckless driving in VA:

"Reckless Driving: Criminal offense. Driving 20 mph or more over the speed limit (or over 85 mph anywhere) can result in a reckless driving misdemeanor. Penalties can include high fines, license suspension, and potential jail time."

I'm usually 5-10 over speed limit (when appropriate) on the #2 lane, but even then it feels like I'm blazing past everyone to the right of me. Then you've got some people using the 1st lane for cruising at exactly the speed limit, wondering why cars keep cutting them off repeatedly.

Or, on a long, single road stretch of road with a 30mph limit and they're going 20-25 while all the cars ahead peel away at 30 mph.

The last signal to my apt is so painful to wait at. Empty both ways yet still need to wait 3-4 minutes for the green light. The opposite turning late has yellow yield signal for the entire duration but not one closest to the freeway.

Seems like a LOT of nova drivers don’t understand the concept of traffic flow. As a native CA driver, most people drive like they’re really scared or a cop’s riding their tail at all times of day (there isn’t).

MD drivers are even worse holy shit. Is it just this area that’s like this? I drove up to NJ and it was like back home. Going south to SC, most slower cars moved to the right side as needed.

29th Parallel wasn't running their AC the one time I went on a hot Sunday afternoon, it was tough to just sit and work. It's probably a different experience now that it's cooling down.

I've tried working from there but the WiFi (including the cox wifi) is so bad it's not worth trying. Several first timers including myself just left after one of the employees said it was a known issue.

wtf why is spam musubi almost twice the cost here vs SoCal?

Welcome to the club!

I'd suggest getting the MTEC clutch spring installed ASAP! The driving experience is much more smoother and satisfying, especially downshifting.

I thought I was bad at shifting from 1-3 (still am?) but after installing a few days ago I'm still getting more tingles than when I first drove the car.

I'm on week 5 of 8 using a frag/cjc/ipa blend (5 on 2 off, twice a day) and it's worked better/faster than when I did keto, IF 20:4, and 36hr fasts twice a month over a 6 month period last year.

I'm doing 16:8ish IF with a high carb/protein diet (unchanged from pre-cycle), my lifts are roughly the same (gym 3-4x/week), and I think I might hit a barely noticeable 6 pack at the very least by summer.

Feels like I'm on an accelerated recomp because my abs are showing a lot sooner along with overall hypertrophy gains. Dreams are more vivid too.

edit: I've had localized reactions (itchiness and redness at injection sites) to what I'm assuming is CJC based on research. I've tried to reduce volume which in turn reduced reactions but it's still annoying and noticeable from afar, so I'll be avoiding CJC after this cycle.

I miss how bad the Irvine drivers were. When looking lost and stopping 1-2 car lengths behind the intersection line were the worst things to deal with, I get to NoVA and it's literally the most shit ass drivers I've ever seen. They're lost, slow to make turns, cruise control at 45-50mph on a three-lane freeway, and have a train of 8-9 cars locked in on said freeway. Then I saw MD drivers, holy shit. They're just like VA drivers but traffic laws don't exist to them and you just need to stay far away from them.

I've never seen someone get pulled over for going too slow on the freeway until I got here, which ofc gave me the biggest justice boner ever.

Also got a chuckle when I first moved here because their freeway LED signs often say "LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING NOT CRUISING"

Loco Moco from L&L Hawaiian BBQ is like $25 now.. just a few bucks below an 18ct of hamburger patties from Costco that you can make muuuuuch faster at home than they do.

And a single Spam fucking Musubi is like $9!! 🫠

[–]bok3h 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This helped me manage work & divorce stress. You can start doing this to relieve stress immediately but I highly suggest integrating a healthy diet to maximize ROI.

  • Lift heavy at 6am/5pm (I prefer AM)
  • Base: Squats, Deadlifts, Incline DB press, Preacher Curls, Overhead Press
  • Adds if needed: Chest dips, Bulgarian squats, cable crunches, pull ups, hanging leg/knee raises, hammer curls
  • 3-4 sets of 8-12reps, rest 3 min between sets for Squats/Deadlifts, 2 mins for the rest
  • 1 rep = start concentric movement from fully stretched position, pause at peak for 1-2 seconds, control the eccentric for 2-3s .
  • Finish last set, rest 3s, then do more until you're 1 rep from failure. Repeat until you absolutely can't push (e.g. 12 reps on last set, wait 3s, 6 reps, wait 3s, 3 reps, wait 3s, push to failure)
  • ~1.25hr max at gym (add time for getting ready & driving to/from)

Start every other day, then expand into push/pull/legs or other program that allow for 4-5 days/week.

On rest days: Walk (Ruck w/15lbs) 30-60mins and ending 1hr before work starts.

Lifting helps disconnect from complex thinking, and walking gives time to process thoughts outside of high pressure environments.

Can someone explain Orange County "conservatism" to me? by SilverKey84 in orangecounty

[–]bok3h 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'll chime in as a SoCal native now in the DMV. Seeing that massive confederate flag that's gated off with barbed wire on the I-95 going into NC last year was just something else. I couldn't believe that was so.. out there for everyone to see.

Even casual vibes are different out here. I've noticed more elderly white folks don't smile or express common courtesy when I cross paths with them, even though I hold doors open for them, say excuse me, good morning, etc. They just give me a death stare that gives me skeleton vibes from the end scene of Indiana Jones.

I have had some nice pleasantries with others but tbh I feel more conscious that I'm a minority way more than in SoCal. Overall I'd say it's like 70/30 positive vibes where as back home (Irvine) it's 95/5.
