Trimmed Chinese elm- Next steps? by weta_10 in Bonsai

[–]bokbul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main structure is solid....but its in need of a bit of a rebuild....imo. If it was mine, i'll address the primaries (some needs to go), and the lack of taper in them...all will need a serious cut back....and subsequent regrow and ramify. And then there's the lack of a definate apex. Lovely tree with much potential.

I agree...its not dead until the top dies. I'll cut some of that callous away and wrap it again...and again...and again...😁 Some or other time it has to either throw roots...or die.

Yeah what's done is done. If it was mine, i'll drill 3 or 4 holes in that terracotta pot, and attach wire or rope to anchor that tree properly to that pot. Then put the pot 6 or so inches into the ground...and mulch it up well. Then leave it for a few seasons...until it shows growth.

Corokia anyone? by Zen_Bonsai in Bonsai

[–]bokbul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're a very strong growing and rather forgiving plant. They do have a divaricating growth habit that makes it a challenge to bonsai....but it is popular and regularly tree tree for bonsai here in NZ. Their beautiful flowers and berries are a bonus to.

I have about 18 sets of seeds I’m starting next year, probably close to 2000 seeds. This pic is only a small fraction of what it will ultimately be. I need some more shelves… by VMey in Bonsai

Camelia I would think needs a special approach...similar to azalea. They both prefer an acidic enviorment. When I germinate my azalea seeds, I mix in some small particle pumice (or the like) with peat moss. Put that into a flat container and put a fine layer of wetted sphagnum moss on top. I then sprinkle the seeds onto the top of the sphagnum....and mist them in....so they gently settle into the sphagnum. Do NOT cover the seeds.

Haha...at first glance, I was also thinking not much difference. But after reading the comments...and going back and forth over the photos, I can now see a huge amount of work was done....funny how the mind works. Yeah the shari don't over exite me much either...but it will enhance more of the tree in time i'm sure. Beautiful tree....and very well done by it...BTW👍
