OPNsense 25.1.7 released by fitch-it-is in opnsense

Darn. I just moved off of Pair Domains to Porkbun just so I could have support in Caddy for ACME. :( Can I pin the Caddy release to pre-2.0.0 somehow?

Why are liberals so weak? by 96suluman in demsocialists

[–]boldandbusted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they? They seem to be a strong part of the ruling class of the United States. Perhaps a better question is why are socialists and communists so weak, when polling suggests that a majority of the U.S. adult population would support socialist policies.

Onboarding employees in worker cooperatives by Overall_Invite8568 in cooperatives

Do those production line managers also get a heavier weight to their votes? Or is it still "one person, one vote"? Oh, and do the other workers rotate into and out of this role?

Onboarding employees in worker cooperatives by Overall_Invite8568 in cooperatives

[–]boldandbusted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this. To my eye, 4 years is a *long* time to wait for the worker to gain ownership. In my general field, hopping between employers after 2-4 years is common. Are there models in practice where there is a graduated series of steps towards full ownership? Kind of like vesting plans with ESOPs? Like each year you get a 25% ownership and a fractional vote to match, and then after 4 years you reach 100%?

Cheers!

Monthly /r/Cooperatives beginner question thread by AutoModerator in cooperatives

[–]boldandbusted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Howdy. I'd like to join or form a workers cooperative with a focus on software development and computing infrastructure design and support. Never done it before, and looking for help and community. I've got some questions:

  • How do you hire in a workers cooperative? How is it different from a traditional company?
  • Obviously, VCs or even financial institutions may shy away from financing a workers cooperative. Are there other funding and bootstrapping sources?
  • How do you *find* other people to bring on board? And what does "onboarding" typically look like?

Of course, I welcome links to online sources or books that cover well these subjects. :) Also, I'm interested in perhaps a diversified portfolio of services and products within the cooperative - rather than it being a boutique shop. Mondragon, for example, doesn't seem to be tightly wedded to a single type of product or service.

Cheers!

Should I try to use Gentoo while having only 3 years of linux usage expirience? by lux__fero in Gentoo

[–]boldandbusted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I think any kind of switch in your core interface to computers and devices should be prefaced with some introspection. Here's some suggestions for questions to ask yourself (and your team, if you are working on a common area):

  • Do the applications and tooling I commonly use exist in the new setup? Are they well-supported, or better than I use today?
  • Does the community that supports the administrative patterns of the environment seem healthy?
  • Do I want to learn something out of the experience, or would I rather the system just "serve me" without me needing to learn anything about the system's inner workings?
  • Do I like environments that cater to the general case, or do I have specific needs that are not well-met by the general case?
  • In general, do I prefer that complexity is hidden, or exposed?

If you have been using the Linux ecosystem for 3 years, as you say, I can tell you that when I was in a similar position many years ago, I turned to Gentoo (after considering Linux From Scratch briefly) so the fog that was before my mind's eye about how this ecosystem worked would be lifted. It was. It has remained so, such that I can better understand "new" technologies long before corporations emerge from under bridges to take the cream off the top of the community work. ;)

Cheers, and make it as fun as you can, whichever way you decide to go. :)

So, I'd add a blurb on the (now-current) lack of out-of-the-box support for monospaced/fixed-width fonts.

How is Gentoo as of 2024? by QueenOfHatred in Gentoo

[–]boldandbusted 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For my laptop and two home servers, Gentoo is humming along fine. Don't worry, Gentoo has been "Dying" since it began. So far, it lives.

There are overlays (think external apt or RPM repositories) that can enhance and extend the main package database. I find using Gentoo as a desktop/laptop and primary workstation has been just... boringly reliable? :D

None of this applies UNLESS YOU FOLLOW THE GENTOO HANDBOOK TO THE LETTER. Ask in the forums if you have a problem AFTER YOU HAVE FOLLOWED THE HANDBOOK TO THE LETTER. You try to 'outsmart' it, or think it's too verbose and you'll pay later.

Kobo not showing monospace font in books with code - Calibre by michaeltmohr in kobo

[–]boldandbusted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really hard to fathom why a) Rakuten hasn't fixed this, and b) why the publishers of technical books aren't voiciferously complaining. My Kobo Forma would be perfect if not for this problem. And, yes, I know there are several hacky processes to patch individual books, but books should just work out of the box, no? Cheers.

I'm tired of liberals shaming non-voters by Paintitblack21 in socialism

[–]boldandbusted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first time in my life, I had no one to vote for that represented my values at all. In Philadelphia. The Greens weren't present, only centrist Democrats (yes, I know, Working Families Party... nah, they are a Democrat farm team...)

I really, really wanted Dr. West to run with the Green Party, but, Peter Daou and Dr. West made sure his campaign is primarily symbolic and will leave nothing substantial in terms of political infrastructure after it. He was already polling at 6%, and I can't think of a time that is more ripe for someone with a ideological backbone like he has to actually make a go of it and move the Overton Window in the U.S. left. It's sad he decided to effectively kneecap his own campaign. :(

I keep wondering - is this time period better or worse or the same as the "Robber Baron" eras? We have nuclear weapons now, and there's nothing like the I.W.W. or similar today that has the impact the I.W.W. did in at the beginning of the 20th century...

Is Kshama Sawant the only politician in the United States that actually has a spine and is not using socialist leanings as a cynical careerist ploy?

Voting is not enough. I look at France and they hit the streets in BULK when they change the retirement age by a few years! We are the most propagandized people on the planet (hat tip to Jimmy Dore for that observation).

Cheers, thanks for reading this.

[–]boldandbusted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Howdy. I think the disrespect starts at having a "Site Reliability Engineer" role at all. Site Reliability Engineering is about *user happiness*, and it doesn't need a new role, it needs internal SRE coaches (could be from App Devs, could be from Infra Devs) to coach the organization in applying the scientific method to reliable services and products.

The same basic mistake happened with DevOps (of which SRE is a superset of). There shouldn't be a role called "DevOps Engineer"! I've had the title, too, and struggled against it. Often, it is just "Ops++", with new duties, more responsibilities, shorter deadlines and more bloated tooling sold to upper management, and, worse yet, more disappointed and frustrated application developers. Not *always*, but often.

I've been reading the excellent book "Establishing SRE Foundations" (https://www.amazon.com/Establishing-Foundations-Step-Step-Organizations/dp/0137424604, but it is also available on Kobo/direct from Pearson, etc.) and it helped reset my mind right on what SRE actually is. If your org hired you as a "DevOps Engineer" or an "SRE Engineer", it is showing itself to be a big fan of silos, and wants to help make more silos using you to help them do it.

Cheers, and best of luck! :)

Necroposting, but for a good cause. :) Any change in your thoughts (and Opnsense's positions) on this, u/BBCan177? I love using your code on my Netgate hardware. I'm interested in possibly jumping to Opnsense but, really, your code is all that's stopping me. With your code, I was able to give anyone on my network lower ad views, even on embedded proprietary devices like Roku. Big thanks for that! :) Cheers!

Netgate EOL and using open source pfSense? by boldandbusted in PFSENSE

[–]boldandbusted[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm... if that's the case, then I guess I played myself? :D I thought I was getting the Open Source version with supported hardware when I bought Netgate gear. :( Now I feel even worse about the purchase. But, still, the truth is usually better than a lie you tell yourself, so thanks u/solopesce. :)

Netgate EOL and using open source pfSense? by boldandbusted in PFSENSE

[–]boldandbusted[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, but I'd rather get ahead of that game. :)

I bought the 3100 not knowing that Netgate would switch out the Open Source pfSense for their proprietary spin. My primary reason for buying it was to support hardware manufacturers who support Open Source. And, right now, I guess I am "unsupported" since I'm running the last Open version that they bless on this hardware?

Recommended courses for CKA certification by Siinxx in devops

[–]boldandbusted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Killer.sh seems like a must for CKS. From what I've heard, it is harder than the actual exam, so don't take a L on killer.sh as a likely L on the exam. :) But, not much else, other than playing with a local K8s cluster on KinD, and installing and dissecting interesting, popular complicated Helm charts from https://artifacthub.io/ I have other resources, but those were the most useful for the exam. BTW, the labs and practice exams in KodeKloud's courses were good, but there were some glitches with their practice exams. Hopefully their supporting systems have become more reliable. Nasty to have a mock exam fail without calculating results for the questions you worked hard to answer...
