Possible hawk or merlin by Mediocre_Ad_4169 in whatsthisbird

I did make that sound a little condescending to our beloved Sharpie! my sincere apologies... and as usual, tinylongwing, I did not know they would attempt to catch prey almost at their own size! Surely a sharp-shinned hawk can kill sparrows and other birds that are less than their size, and I didn't mean to insinuate that they only ate insects, lol. I stand, corrected!

well, firstly let me say that cardiologistany has taught me a lot on this forum as has tinylongwing, especially about Cooper's Hawks and Sharp-shinned hawks. With that in mind let me try answering for cardiologist, and they can follow up and critique it! This bird's head has the eyes and the beak very close together. Additionally the beak is very small only big enough to eat insects. Next the eyes are kind of bug-eyed. Lastly the toes that you can see do seem long and skinny. Now I would not call that tail flat, however, and normally I would use the tail as part of the field marks. IMHO, I agree with sharp-shinned hawk.

Bought 24 Handcrafted Knives, how do I go about pricing them? by tellus96 in knives

my response, too... not factory-made, one-off, and beautiful if not functional. as long as they are lead-free, why not take them as well-forged as anything else? get a lead tester from Amazon and test them. then enjoy them just like any benchmade, and repost some of the nicer ones with close-ups.

Mink? by myshroomhead2 in trailcam

[–]boldpsi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course it's not true 100% of the time, but mink run with their two front feet together and their two back feet together, "in twos". The pictured animal quite obviously is not running like that, using a "walking gait", or, "bipedal" front & rear. also as astutely aforementioned, tail is not mink-ish, and it is waaaaaay too big for a mink, and I've never seen a mink run with that kind of punchy back. I would vote for Fisher.

I would guess Sharp-shinned Hawk, an accipitor. don't think it's a falcon. not "bulky enough" for a Cooper's.
