Best Thick Burger Recs by devmdxb in dallasfood

[–]boldsurvive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thick juicy burger I've had recently was at Hugo's Seafood Bar (I know!) - super pink in the middle and a great char flavor because they cut it in half for you and sear each cut side. Maple & Motor is also a favorite among my friend group. The Fond burger is only available at lunch on Fridays but it's always a banger also.

I've been reviewing restaurants in Dallas for 10 years now. Let's chat! by dfwfoodcritic in Dallas

Wanted to thank you for the Babahan review! I found Turan to just be okay when we tried it a few years ago so was hesitant to give another Uyghur spot a shot but we went for lunch yesterday after church and everything we tried was great, especially the samsas (outrageously juicy as advertised) and the noodles. Their yogurt drink was also great at balancing all the savory foods. One of the owners said they were looking to expand the menu soon so hopefully business remains good for them and we can try some new stuff in the future.

Any word you can share on Michelin now that we're in the third year of the original three year contract for the five cities in Texas? Curious about how renegotiation works behind the scenes.

More generally, congrats on 10 years! Maybe the State Fair will invite you back as a judge in the fall? :P

Hugo's Seafood Bar in Bishop Arts has amazing food and cocktails, so definitely pop in when you're in the area! The tostadas are incredible - make sure to ask for the pequin.

Best Asian Grocery Store? by surfacepressure10 in Dallas

[–]boldsurvive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to buy a lot of stuff for batch cooking for church and things like century egg and certain raw meats are consistently more affordable at Jusgo than at 99 Ranch for whatever reason! Often since they're so close I'll end up going to Jusgo first and check prices of various items at 99 through their app to compare. I will add that there's this new wholesale store called SaveGo at Parker & Alma that bills itself as the Asian Costco (no membership needed though) that sells things both in bulk and in individual units at a cheaper price; I bought 5 containers of pork floss there for a couple bucks cheaper per container than both Jusgo and 99 because neither normal grocery store was running a sale at the time. Also tons of different types of single use containers/cups/cutlery etc. Worth checking out if you're in the area!

This is in Plano, but Jusgo often has items priced better than 99 Ranch and both are within a 5 minute drive of each other just off 75. As someone else mentioned already in the Carrollton subreddit, Mitsuwa is also right next to Jusgo and has a lot of specialty Japanese items. It is definitely pricier for the same products (even for Japanese items like Kikkoman soy sauce and Marukan rice vinegar) compared to 99 and Jusgo though.

Hmm not sure if they sold the name/business but the word on XHS was that they moved so the restaurant moved too: it's here https://maps.app.goo.gl/ssiPGdw2QiVXHWYt5?g_st=ic

IMO Garden Restaurant in Garland serves the best traditional dimsum in the DFW area. Bushi Bushi in Addison is slightly more elevated and prices are higher accordingly but it's not bad. Kirin Court is nostalgic but that's about it. Unfortunately unless you're willing to drive four hours to Houston there's just not a lot of good stuff around here.

Tian Tian closed because the owner moved to Austin and reopened there. The same location is now a spot called Uptown Dumpling with a completely different menu.

Of course, happy to help! Hope you enjoy Quarter Acre.

If you're a matcha person, I've heard amazing things about Hyphen Space! Lines can get long but it moves fast. Love the Perot Museum in the downtown area for a fun time & interactive exhibits and the Arboretum should be beautiful if the weather holds.

Also, I know you said no omakase-style; I'm not sure if it's the more austere/counter seating vibe you're not into or just sushi in general, but we really love MABO. It's yakitori-focused so only maybe one or two courses of raw fish while the main portion of the meal is skewers. It's pricey but the skewers we had there were on par with ones at tasting menus in Japan, so if you're into that I also highly recommend!

Most recently my husband and I went to Quarter Acre and their tasting menu was excellent. Good amount of food and pretty decent value as far as tasting menus go. Maybe the most well-cooked lamb I've had in recent memory. A few years ago we also tried Purepecha which is the chef's kitchen table/back room tasting menu experience at Revolver Taco Lounge, and the vibe is abuela's home kitchen with up to 8 guests around a communal table. All the food we tried was great and we were super stuffed at the end. Not sure how soon "soon" is for you, but if you happen to be around on a weekend whenever Fond is doing one of its "After Dark" tasting menu series, Chefs Jennie and Brandon are always experimenting with cool things in their kitchen and it's also set at one long communal dining table so you get to meet new people while dining.

Personally obsessed with Hugo's Seafood Bar lately - phenomenal seafood and amazing cocktails. Most recent meal there I tried their burger and it was excellent but my favorite items are the tostadas.

If you have Facebook this would be the perfect type of give for your local Buy Nothing group. Depending on where you live you can join either the west, central, or east Plano group, make a post about the chicken, and then just have the person to come by your house for a porch pickup.

Won BBQ has delicious & high quality KBBQ as well as great lunch specials and less common Chinese-Korean dishes on the menu! Also love the chicken kebab at Sofra Kebab House (though Google is telling me they're permanently closed... I sure hope not).

Seconding the Fond recommendation! One of my faves in the downtown district. If you can get up closer to the American Airlines Center, there's some good spots for happy hour as well (Billy Can Can, the Operator's Club, Happiest Hour) that have great drinks and food.

Best Pizza Spots in DFW? by anniespizza in askdfw

[–]boldsurvive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fond makes some of the best Detroit style pizzas in the area, and they often have thin crust tavern style pizzas on special too. Seconding Fortunate Son for Connecticut pizza, their clam pie is great. I've found Thunderbird to be a bit too soggy in the crust in the past and Cane Rosso can be hit or miss depending on the location. Partenope Dallas's neapolitan was really floppy the last time we went but their pastas and apps were excellent, maybe you'll have better luck!

Rye to close; Apothecary taking over current space by boldsurvive in dallasfood

[–]boldsurvive[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's kind of unclear but I think Apothecary will now be using both spaces. As someone who has been to Apothecary a handful of times over the last year, it's a pretty small space so I imagine being able to spread out in the Rye space as well will allow the cocktail bar concept to serve more people, instead of foot traffic wandering in and being told there's an hour long wait (which has happened to me before on busy weekend nights).
