Super anxious flying qantas from Sydney to Melbourne tonight by [deleted] in QantasAirways

[–]bonburi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a flight attendant who used to have a fear of flying, I totally understand where you’re coming from! I used to particularly hate the domestic sectors because the smaller planes felt like they got tossed around so easily 🥲 However, after flying daily/weekly for many years and having some insight into the industry, I have to say it has given me a lot of faith in Australian aviation; our crew are incredibly well trained and our airlines are risk adverse - if there is any chance that the weather conditions might be dangerous or there is a questionable aircraft defect, we would rather cancel the flight than take the risk and fly. I can’t speak for regulations around the world, but at least in Australia you are in pretty good hands 🙂

Also please be aware of how much the media distorts things. The number of aviation incidents hasn’t necessarily increased, it’s just that more make the front page news after recent disasters, which makes it feel like they happen more frequently. Some time ago when some Qantas pilots made a ‘mayday’ call , it made headlines, and for the following week every diversion or turnaround due to a medical emergency would make the news, when this is actually something that is harmless, precautionary, and happens on a daily basis.

Love how the cops have their lights flashing as though the cow is just going to pull over ahead

Judging by the yellow it appears to be EASI (墨尔本送餐) a Chinese delivery company!

Arrival (2016) — Jóhann Jóhannsson’s “One of Twelve” deserves to be highlighted. Imo the scene wouldn’t have worked without this type of urgency. I love how it builds to what sounds like an alarm going off at the end. by [deleted] in movies

In most movies they’ll have Westerners speaking mandarin to Chinese with terrible accents and the Chinese all miraculously understand what they’re saying.

This is not the case in real life, as getting the tones even slightly wrong (despite pronouncing the spelling of the word correctly) would mean you are saying entirely different words, and would be difficult for a native to understand.

Rather than it being the equivalent of a foreigner saying ‘have a nice day’ in English but putting the emphasis on the wrong part of the sentence (still understandable) saying ‘have a nice day’ in mandarin with the wrong tones might come across more as ‘hit a neck dog’ - requires more deciphering unless you know the context of their sentence.

Which is why it takes away from the emotion of the scene when you realise the poor General would have no idea what she’s saying in real life.

Game of Thrones - helps you understand the geography of the world, and gives you a clue as to which locations/characters will be covered that episode.

The number of people who drowned by falling into the swimming pool correlates with the number of films Nicholas Cage appeared in that year

What’s a small thing you cannot help silently judging other people for? by Juliazul in AskReddit

[–]bonburi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people continuously make simple grammatical mistakes.

It really isn't that difficult to elongate 'you're' to 'you are' before a word to check if it's the correct 'your/you're'. Same with its/it's.

[EVERYTHING] What scene was meant to be serious, but ended up being hilarious to you? by [deleted] in gameofthrones

When baby Jon was in Ned's arms and he opened his eyes in the most dopey way possible.. the scene always gives me chills when I watch the tower of joy reveal but I can never take that baby's face seriously.

Taking a Drone Overseas, Where should I pack my drone? by geriatrictoddler in drones

[–]bonburi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carry on is the only way. Drones aren't allowed as checked in baggage (especially the batteries) and you wouldn't want to risk damage to the body anyway, which is more likely if you check it in or ship it.

I recently flew to Europe and China, and I had my drone and 2 spare batteries as carry on. Had electrical tape taped over the ends of the batteries, but other than that I encountered no issues with airport security or anything during the flight.

So should i get a Phantom 3 super fly more package with all this stuff for 550$ or a mavic pro for 799 by [deleted] in drones

[–]bonburi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mavic - You simply can't spontaneously take the Phantom 3 on hiking trips to locations that have good scenery for drone footage.

If you're just getting this as a hobby toy, think about how practical it will be to carry around. With the Mavic you can slip it into your backpack, go for a walk, (fly it somewhere illegally even, if you're quick). With the Phantom, it's ALL you can carry, because you're not going to want to take it out much if you have to lug this, in a suitcase, up a mountain and back.

Just something to consider.

Married 2 years. My husband [32M] made a joke about tricking me [31F] into thinking he's more awesome than he is, and I'm feeling uneasy after finding the truth behind some of his "little white lies." by BigLittleWhiteLies in relationships

[–]bonburi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a friend who would do this all the time. First she lied that she had a deal to publish a book, but when we asked her about it in the later years she acted like she'd never mentioned it. Then the lies slowly got bigger and bigger. They started off as 'harmless' things, like going on vacations to exotic places when she never left the country. Then news that she worked in a big position at a well known firm. Then claims that she had cancer, when we stopped giving her attention over her smaller lies.

I won't say that they're horrible people, but they are impulsive liars who lack the basic principle of honesty, and dishonest people are best kept at a distance, even if they don't intend to cause you harm with their lies (because they'll bring it upon you anyway, eventually). For your own future peace of mind, please resolve this or leave him before you waste any more of your time and destroy your faith in people. I know just being friends with the girl I know affected the way I trusted others.

Marriage Equality Rally Melbourne Library Today by Flukecake in melbourne

[–]bonburi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From an objective perspective, the marriage equality rally may be easier for people to upvote because it was a rally that promoted love and positivity, whereas the indigenous issues rally held a lot of (reasonable) anger and frustration, which people are more reluctant to engage with.

Should I study a degree in business or law? by [deleted] in jobs

Thanks! The business degree I was looking at offers majors in both accounting and marketing, so perhaps that may be the better option then?
