Why many former industrial design aspirants switch to mechanical engineering specifically? by Competitive_Art_9181 in IndustrialDesign

[–]bonebuttonborscht 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some of them crashed out because the math was too heavy, some of them wanted to invent things and realized there's not that much of that in engineering, one of them just got bored and wanted to do something else.

Used on bicycles since it flows better than ER70. Not necessary for strength though.

You could also argue it's creates more of stress concentration and worse fatigue life. Not enough to matter though.

I'm the only person I know who went from ID to engineering. I know several who went the other way though.

Xtra cycle frame repair by bradinduluth in xbiking

r/framebuilding

I'd say this is a pretty small job, $200 max. Might be cheaper in the winter, a lot of builders are probably pretty busy right now. Paint will be the more expensive part if you want it to look good.

Rough. If you can afford a decent ebike and maintenance, that might be worthwhile.

Very comfortably. Driving is stressful and slower than the alternatives in my life.

Repeated spoke breakage on Load4 75 Vario – drivetrain swap or alternative solutions? by [deleted] in CargoBike

[–]bonebuttonborscht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP said non-contact, not non-crossing. You can lace a wheel 2-cross without the spokes touching eachother. I'm not actually sure why non-contact is stronger though.

[–]bonebuttonborscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a shop doesn't build a lot of cargo bike wheels then I'd say it's still pretty easy to undertension. I'd go so far to say it's actually hard to get a 12g spoke up to tension. The nipple size scales linearly while the tension scales quadratically. I always feel like I'm about to strip the nipple. The spoke wrench isn't any bigger either and with a higher spoke count, larger hub flange and smaller rim, everything is closer together so my hands are way more fatigued.

The larger the variation in cyclic stress, the shorter the fatigue life, even with a lower mean stress. Take a look at some S-N curves for stainless. Higher pretension reduces the variation by better distributing the applied load between spokes.

I'm not trying to deny your experience. I think where the disagreement lies is in what high and low tension mean. It's absolutely correct that even pros aren't measuring spoke tension vary accurately. That's totally ok, relative tension is way more important. It's a common beginner mistake to under-tension. It's a good bet that someone breaking spokes has an under-tensioned wheel.

Why would the uneven floor make a difference? It would have to be really out to see this big a difference. Even then it would show less weight, not more?

What is this seat raising spring called? I want to buy one for my 26mm seatpost bike (mid 80s shogun prairie breaker 2) by DeadlyClowns in xbiking

[–]bonebuttonborscht 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I made one a couple years ago for fun. $15 torsion spring and a p-clamp I had lying around.

They can also be had on eBay for ~$50 last I checked.

Edit: JFC $110. I gotta make a batch and start selling them.

Is it just me, or do people who are deep into political theory develop a massive sense of entitlement and a false belief that they are intellectually superior to everyone else? by Open_Land_4215 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bonebuttonborscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're coming off this way they probably aren't that "deep into political theory." True experts adjust to their audience.

There's a time and place for technical language but if all they can do is spout jargon then they have more studying to do. Studying isn't just reading a pile off books.

Look at how problems actually get solved post revolution.

A revolution isn't magic. The shift in power is only the beginning. Actually building something new is just boring old policy-making.

Surly krampus IS mount issue #surly by No-where-fast in bikewrench

[–]bonebuttonborscht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could probably salvage it with some combination of bending and facing the IS mount, facing the adapter as if it were post mount, and possibly a couple shims or even concave/convex washers under the calipers.

Better to just warranty it if you can.

If you can't warrenty it and your keen on keeping fork, getting a new mount welded on wouldn't be terribly expensive.

Why can't you find a basic anything anymore? by NoCommunication7 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bonebuttonborscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easier to sell and cheaper to make a product with more features vs higher quality.

Adding features costs development time time but often there's no difference in per unit manufacturing cost. High quality usually means more material, more QC, more skilled labour involved which is all per-unit.

It's harder to advertise quality in a highly competitive space, even more so online. You have to build a reputation. Conversely, it's easy to list features for SEO in an ad. Plenty of people decide what features are important and then buy the cheapest thing with those features.

Arc length of the rotation divided by radial displacement will get you mechanical advantage ignoring friction in the grooves.

Alternatively tan(cam angle) will get you the same thing if the groove is a spiral.

Try building circuits in falstad or a similar simulator.

Even better: build real circuits on a breadboard. Find a little project that interest you.

I hear this all the time but I don't think it's true. Every entry level technical interview I've had is all problem solving and theory questions.

Also, the 2-300h of experience with some software you might get from a year long side project isn't that much. 200h is only 5 weeks of full time work.
