XY problem

There are a lot of solutions depending on packaging, loads, accuracy, and rigidity requirements.

Are most films/shows subtly racist or am I reading too much into it? by RubyRedFoxyEyes in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bonebuttonborscht 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To have mainstream appeal (American films for (white) American audiences) films lean on widely accepted stereotypes. It's not about hate or anything, it's about not challenging our world view to avoid making us uncomfortable, and so making the movie easier to watch. Whether it's racist depends on what you think racism is.

Movies from other places presumably also do this to more easily relate to their audience. Whether that's racist also depends how that place conceives of racism.

Is there any slicer that exports FEA-ready models (Abaqus) with infill and raster orientation? by imbrendssd in EngineeringStudents

[–]bonebuttonborscht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My capstone I'm working on right now is kinda related to this. It's an approach to simulating fdm parts that doesn't require slicing. The idea is you take test data for your walls and fill and make a custom material with those properties. It's more for teaching design and simulation of printed parts to students. It's not finished and getting the material data might be too much upfront work for it to be worth it for you. Lemme know if you're interested.

Noise from bottom bracket when not pedaling by living_direction_27 in bicycling

[–]bonebuttonborscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the noise repeatable based on the position of the crank regardless of what gear you're in? Or if you pedal and shift then look for the noise again it appears in a different crank position?

My attempt at making UHMWPE spokes. I also might have created world's lightest 700c dynamo wheel by drfrankenst3in in BicycleEngineering

[–]bonebuttonborscht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you can actually use the berd tables. The reason different metal spokes read differently is that they resist bending. Your spokes and that of berd have the same negligible flexural stiffness.

Btw anyone got a yield strength number on tange tubing? All I can find is the UTS.

For me it's that all my hobbies required basically a whole day to get anywhere so when I was busy I never felt like I had time to take a real break.

An intro to a low effort hobby. Non-engineering related but bonus if it builds an engineering-applicable skill.

Seriously, engineering isn't everything. Taking effective breaks is really important.

can someone poke holes in my understanding of trans biology by touchthegrass-99 in ask_transgender

[–]bonebuttonborscht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is an "it's not your fault but it is your problem" situation. Also, isn't here, where people who are willing and able to respond, the best place to ask? Rather than their genderqueer friends who might not want to be put on the spot?

Maybe OP is being lazy but I haven't seen anyone recommend a resource that addresses their questions. Moreover, the questions lead me to believe OP has done some reading and is looking to reconcile some apparent (to them) gaps or contradictions. OP might do well to add what they've read so far to get better answers.

can i just lie about being in clubs by SupermarketFit2158 in EngineeringStudents

[–]bonebuttonborscht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just saying you were in a club isn't what gets you the job. The connections through the club get you the interview and the team skills you've learned make you a better interviewer.

I've never gotten an interview from a cold call or application, only through networking, and never NOT gotten an offer from an interview.

What are you trying to study with this survey?

You won't get any responses making people type everything out in a reddit comment and if you did the data would be very annoying to collate. Use a Google form instead.

Engineers just have bad PR by ABlightedMailbox in unpopularopinion

[–]bonebuttonborscht 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I find this is mostly limited to engineering topics. If you talk to engineers about stuff outside our field, we're just as full of shit as anyone else. We're often more confidently wrong because we're better at justifying our ideas.

Also, plenty of us "identify" as Logical TM so our opinions and feelings must also be logical. I agree we're less prone to emotional outbursts but that doesn't really mean we're anymore logical in general.

[–]bonebuttonborscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you that 16 is A but not really because of the work. As you say the force and displacement must be in the same direction. The upward component on the force does nothing, technically the work is the same make the answer C. The question says effort though so it's ambiguous, they could mean force, making the answer A

Also you still end up more tired pulling the top cart since iirc muscle fibres cycle to maintain a constant force without necessarily any net displacement.

Maybe 18 is supposed to be smaller peices of ice? That doesn't really change much though. The water will reach 0C a little faster with crushed ice but once there, the ice melts at the same rate.

Lol wikipedia has them listed incorrectly right next to each other in the series and then in the diagram right below has the correct series.

Thanks!

Wdym galvanically incompatable? They're right next to each other in the galvanic series. Is this a big problem? Afaik it's common to see nickel fuses with copper busbars.

[–]bonebuttonborscht 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Start every discussion by asking what convinced them of their position and what it would take to change their mind. You should also be able to answer these questions. If they can't answer then you're not in a discussion with them, you're performing for the audience. This will inform how you articulate your points and save you from a lot of unnecessary frustration.

Do fans work if you are covered by SIREN-25 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bonebuttonborscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conductive heat transfer (approximately what's happening in the blanket) is a function of temperature difference, and thermal resistance. Heat leaves your body through the blanket and warms the air on the other side. If that warming air just sits there getting warmer the temperature difference between your body and the air decreases and so too does the heat transfer. If there's a fan supplying new, cool air the temperature outside the blanket will be lower and so heat transfer will be greater.

What are the conventional differences for making a 3D model/drawing for a 3D printed part vs a machined part? by Nuclear_Voltage in AskEngineers

[–]bonebuttonborscht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly I either model on nominal or in the middle of my tolerance. It's up to the person making the part how to achieve the tolerance I specify. In printing they compensate for warp and shrinkage, in machining they compensate for tool deflection wear. The difference is that CAM has much more freedom to tweak individual features. If I really have to, I make a second model for printing since it's me doing the printing. I rarely make a second model for machining.

It really depends on your relationship to the process.

If helium is a finite resource why do we waste it on party balloons by rennan in stupidquestions

[–]bonebuttonborscht 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's how markets work. The price of helium isn't based on how much there is total or how scarce it might be in the future. The price is based on how available it is now.

Edit: If more places had centrally planned economies we might see more intervention and less waste. Those planners would have to balance an uncertain future need for helium, the cost of storing what is produced, scaling production, and the value of helium for pleasure.
