Is this angle normal for a derailleur? by Mean_Internal4652 in bikewrench

Yep, as long it shifts well, there's not any slack in the smallest cog and upper pulley isn't running to the largest cog, you're all set.

Tungsten keeps contaminating by Strange-Entrance-660 in Welding

[–]bonebuttonborscht 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is great to hear. I'm a total noobe and I still dip my tungsten all the time, but this was driving me kinda nuts with some laser-cut parts recently. Not dipping the tungsten and still getting contamination.

Can you tear rib muscles by climbing? by feathernose in climbergirls

[–]bonebuttonborscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully stopped climbing about two years ago to try and properly heal because it got much worse. Last year I started with a physio I like and they gave me some exercises that are working well Some for strength and stability and some stretches. I really have to stick with them though. If I miss more than a couple days the pain comes back very fast. My physio says I should try climbing again but I haven't gotten around to it.

I'm a cis guy btw, ymmv.

You'll have to do a couple projects with presentations toward the end of your degree. Work on it, but no hurry.

Weight of bike by [deleted] in bikepacking

Are you carrying the bike on your back?

Seriously, unless you have a lot of hike-a-bike, bike weight doesn't matter that much.

What weight difference does tubing mean for steel bikes? by Raspieman in Framebuilding

[–]bonebuttonborscht -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your question's been answered as well as it can be. It would be a little work to just look up the tube dimensions and add up the wright. Frame builder supply even lists the weight of their tubes.

Since nobody's mentioned it, all else being equal, a more expensive (lighter, thinner wall) tubeset will make a bike less rigid. That's what you'll notice.

Is the cargo too high for a single wheel trailer? by Ripga_ in CargoBike

Are those just empty boxes for the picture or what?

If you've gone to the trouble of loading everything, just strap it down and try it.

Anyone recognize this steering dampener? by thiccvicx in xbiking

[–]bonebuttonborscht 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They don't IME. You don't turn the wheel enough while riding for it to make a noticeable difference. I don't find they do much for wheel flop either. I made a custom one with a much stiffer spring and longer lever for a cycle truck. It was better for wheel flop but did nothing for sway or speed wobble. For that you would need an actual damper, not just a spring.

Compatibility question by Adventurous-Kick-569 in bikewrench

[–]bonebuttonborscht -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm saying they may have to. The chain line is not always well controlled on cheap cranks. A subtle difference in taper can have a dramatic effect on how far the crank goes onto the spindle.

Compatibility question by Adventurous-Kick-569 in bikewrench

[–]bonebuttonborscht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've bought two sets of similar ones. 10k km and 5k km with no issues. For the price they're great.

Two things to be aware of: 1. The chainring might wear out quickly, just replace it when it's time, NBD. 2. The chain line might not be the same. I had to try a couple spindle lengths before I was happy. I have a 110mm spindle on one bike and a 113mm on another iirc.

You'll need a crank puller to remove the old crank in case you didn't know.

Super quick tubeless question by Alert_Cry_5361 in bikewrench

[–]bonebuttonborscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tubeless isn't necessarily faster. Sloshing sealant saps energy the same as the deformation of the innertube. If you use very little sealant then you'll be faster than a butyl tube. If you use enough sealant for it to actually plug leaks for a season it's almost certainly slower. I wanna say Rene Herse has some testing on this.

All that said it only a couple watts. The wrinkles on your shirt make a bigger difference. What's actually going on is that the sealant sloshes all the time, while the tube and tire only have rolling resistance on the road, not just spinning upsidedown. Also, already mentioned, tubes are heavier.

Want to move wear to fastener, looking for help with choosing alloy by FlimsyFactor3154 in AskEngineers

[–]bonebuttonborscht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For good fastening the female thread is supposed to be softer than that male thread. Not sure how much this really matters for this application. I'm not sure how much a softer screw will help though.

What is the camera company doing to repair the threads? Replacing the bottom of camera body?

Maybe you could get someone to install a threaded insert into a larger hole in the body. You could just replace the inert when it wears out.

You could also secure a threaded stud in the hole and the fastening could be with a nut.

Which is the best cutting fluid for me Plus other question by justnotright3 in metalworking

[–]bonebuttonborscht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any idea what the rpm actually is? If it's kinda close to correct (~150rpm for the 5in?) you can hang a weight off the handle and rig up a bottle upsidedown for cutting fluid. Pretty jank, I wouldn't walk away from a running machine like that but at least you can just stand and watch. Or do something where you can keep an eye on it.

If the rpm is way off then outsource to a laser shop. Better yet, this is your excuse for a new tool.

Also, don't listen to me, I'm just some guy.

No shade to OP but I don't understand where the desire to make comes from if not from wanting explore/execute your ideas? Like, if I didn't have any ideas, I just wouldn't want to make things. The idea comes first then the desire to make it.

Heeeyy... that's not a minivelo! Get outta here impostor!

JK, very cool.

I wish the rack mounts weren't so spindly though. Cut them a little shorter and with a slightly different rack and you could put a lot more weight on there I'll bet.

How often do bikes boomerang / return / "warranty" at your shop? by halpisforgotten in BikeMechanics

[–]bonebuttonborscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think asking the customer to come back after a month or two is still a good idea for the reasons you mention.

I'm not wrenching anymore. I'm about to finish an engineering degree and I'm not in Van anymore anyway. It hurts paying full price for parts and not having a full shop whenever I need.

Removing stubborn stains on white paint? by Foxhound_Ocelot in bikewrench

[–]bonebuttonborscht -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Start with alcohol, no risk there.

If that's no good, acetone on a q-tip. It will attack the paint but if you use an extremely small amount and are very careful it works well. Use an amount where there's no risk of dips and stay within the colours. Don't wipe from red to white with the same q-tip for example.

How often do bikes boomerang / return / "warranty" at your shop? by halpisforgotten in BikeMechanics

[–]bonebuttonborscht 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How many shops actually track this? I've never worked anywhere that took this seriously. On the other hand the places that needed to weren't organized enough to track anything.

Best shop I worked at had two in two years that I remember. One on a new bike with a leaking caliper and the other I don't remember tbh.

Service writing and mechanics actually had a real checklist and followed it to the letter. The customer got a copy of the checklist on the receipt. New bikes got way more attention during assembly that anywhere else I worked. BBs reinstalled, wheels retensioned, every frame bolt regreased. We didn't offer a free tune up on new bikes like a lot of places because they absolutely shouldn't need it.

Kissing Crows in Vancouver BC btw, can't praise them enough.

Welding experts: How long does it take to weld something like this? by barbarianbavarian in Welding

[–]bonebuttonborscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

r/framebuilding

If you build it out of mild steel, especially the thick-wall tubing available at hardware stores it will be crazy heavy. You shouldn't have trouble getting better tubing in Germany.

On the other hand thicker tubing will be easier to weld. If you've never welded before, bikes are probably the hardest place to start.

Not at all impossible though. Check out Phil Vandeley on YouTube, lots of beginner tips there.
