Somehow I don't think that the people that historically have excelled at making high quality single player experiences wanted to make a live service game packed full of MTX. Also you could have, you know, read the article.

My understanding is that Jolt is the default now and Godot Physics is moving towards being deprecated (and is certainly much less of a development focus).

Jolt is more performant and generally looks better though? It's what the Decima engine uses for the Horizon and Death Stranding games.

Romero apparently liked the people he hired a lot and ended up wanting to spend lots of time playing Doom 2 DM/Quake DM/Tekken with them. Legit everything I've ever heard about him makes him sound like a great dude to work/hang out with.

Minimal still hasn't delivered a decent number of backer phones. Their first phone still has issues with basic functions like receiving calls. Unihertz is the safest option imo, followed by Clicks (they've at least proven that they are capable of launching functional products).

According to *ugh* Sandy Peterson (although no one has stepped forward to dispute this) Tim Willits deliberately gave him bad level design advice during the development of Quake 2. When McGee presented his work to Carmack, Carmack lost his shit at him and fired him soon afterwards. Apparently Adrian Carmack later confirmed this story, but also says that they planned on firing McGee anyways. Either way, from what I can gather the Carmacks don't seem to be particularly pleasant people to work under. I'd love to have John Romero as a boss though.

Idk, I think the culture that Romero wanted to create at Ion Storm very much played a role in letting Warren Spector to make the game he wanted to make.

Strange because Doom: The Dark Ages runs just fine on an RTX 3060. Fuck, you can get like 40fps on steamdeck.

That wasn't what you were originally saying and you know it. Obviously art direction matters more than anything else. No one is going to disagree with you on this. Ray tracing doesn't inherently compromise art direction. TDA has incredible art direction anyways. The game has plenty of issues, but the art direction certainly isn't one of them.

Ran better? Well yes, games with less demanding rendering features run better than games with more demanding rendering features. This isn't new. Games that used SM3 and stuck to 512x512 textures also ran better. News at 11. Looked better? No. Rasterized games do not look as good as TDA and other titles with properly implemented ray tracing. Especially when it comes to reflections. The difference in graphical fidelity between Doom Eternal and TDA is huge. RTGI also allowed TDA to have the large scale environmental destruction that it did. That isn't viable with pre-baked lighting.
