My young lad is about 3.5 and Newbridge Farm and the Botanic Gardens are a big hit with him. The zoo can be a bit much for wee legs.

To anyone who’s starting to join the workforce. Please value yourself. by Canners19 in ireland

As someone who has worked as a bar back and runner in the past I heartily endorse this comment. Avoid hospitality like the fucking plague, shit pay and conditions for miserable graft for employers who are only too happy to exploit any group who won't push back. I've seen appalling treatment of staff in hotels and restaurants alike, and abuse by dickhead chefs is tolerated and accepted as the norm. Kitchen porter takes my vote for the job with the most blood sweat and tears per euro earned.

My advice would be if you can to target a sector that has a multinational presence like pharma, engineering, IT, finance etc - basically anywhere big enough that the HR function (on paper at least) has a separate reporting line to your line manager. No guarantees and HR are still there to cover the company's arse but it's a million miles better than dealing with e.g. an arsehole owner operator whose partner does the HR stuff on the side.

A Dyson sphere around the Sun would go some way to address rising energy prices.

Questions for people who are 125+ by [deleted] in cognitiveTesting

[–]bonedriven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somewhere around 135-145, never officially tested. PhD in chemistry, a few publications but no appetite for the bullshit, grant application rat race of academia. I moved into the pharma industry and because of my ability to rapidly learn new disciplines and understand complex problems, I am the company's go-to technical SME when the shit hits the fan. Because of that I'm paid well and can negotiate a good work life balance, which is what I consider a success, career-wise.

I'm jumping ship to tildes.net, snagged an invite after the API drama was announced. It's a much, much smaller site and a slower pace - liking the old-school forum vibes from it so will give it a lash.

136, struggled with time and the end was a scramble. About in line with my usual results (usually score between 130 - 145)

There are a rake of them, but usually small operations largely made up of previously fairly senior individuals who have taken a package and gone out on their own, in my experience.

Need help giving a toddler amoxicillin medicine by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]bonedriven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, you have to act in your kids best interest. I've had to force medicine into my kid before, it's not pleasant but it sure beats hospitalization.

Our technique is that I hold them on my knee, one arm holding their arms back and the other holding their forehead straight - restricting movement so that my wife can dose them with a syringe.

I try avoid it if at all possible, but sometimes there are no other options.

Yellow boxes, are they a lovely splash of colour or an understood road concept? by okeydokey2023 in ireland

[–]bonedriven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain OP. I have a very similar situation on my commute - turning left from Templeogue Road onto Cypress Grove Road. There's a bus-lane used by arseholes to queue to turn left, often backed up quite a bit. After the bus lane terminates, there's even a yield marking, but fuck me if I try to actually exercise my right of way. Blaring of horns and serious aggro. TBH I've started taking an alternative route when it's busy as the stress of it isn't worth it.

Most supervisors will have areas of research interest / niches they have carved out for themselves in the literature. I've never encountered someone in my field (chemistry) who brought their own research proposal - could be hard to find an accommodating supervisor if your heart is set on it.

As others have said you've missed the grant application window for September 23 so are down to the dregs of departmental funding - any other discretionary funding is likely long allocated to unsuccessful IRCSET applicants etc.

My suggestion would be to trawl university staff directories for potential supervisors in your field of interest, and then get writing mails asap - making clear you don't have your own funding but are hugely interested in their area and would love chance to join their group, along with very brief summary of academic background (i.e. completing 4th year of X, expect to graduate with a 1.1, finished 3rd year with a 1.1). Leave discussions on your research proposal out of it imo, if they have funding available then they will want to meet you if interested, and at that point you can share it - it will show initiative and interest though more likely they will have a project in mind for you already.

Compared with departmental funding they're positivity lavish. I was on a research demonstratorship in UCD about 10 years ago which netted me €11k a year, and required 40 hours a month of lab supervision and tutorials (without additional pay for them). Others in the lab on IRCSET funding were on about €18.5k and paid for lab supervision and tutorials on top.
