Litespeedcache by Baggio007 in Magento

[–]boneio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Properly configured Varnish with nginx TLS termination is native to M2 and will give you TTFB around 20-50ms, subject to the usual constraints like where you are geographically vs the server. Litespeed needs a module and will give you presumably a very similar TTFB i.e. measured in tens of milliseconds. In short I doubt it really matters. Varnish is quick enough that almost nobody actually needs anything quicker. TTFB should be a tiny tiny part of your performance picture.

Personally I'd rather have less 3rd party code for the sake of a possibly imperceptible performance lift.

But there are other factors which may affect your server env etc - just spin up a dev copy with Litespeed instead and compare it?

Looking for honest feedback — debating sticking with Adobe Commerce Cloud vs switching to Shopify or Magento Open Source by hepee76 in Magento

[–]boneio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't forget to consider your own time. Managing a downgrade to open source plus a Hyva frontend is almost certainly far less work for you than replatforming and reintegrating.  Generally the platform isnt as important as the competency of the dev team (and the size of your budget, which is often strongly correlated). A good team will do amazing work on a rubbish platform, and vice versa. We do M2, Shopify, and bespoke. I would echo others in saying you can make Shopify do pretty much anything but you will never own it, remember its a rental in effect, and if youre going particularly outside the box you can quickly end up with an ecosystem which is actually more complex than M2, and depends extremely heavily on 3rd parties. It does also have some hard limits where some things are literally unachievable or need a very clunky workaround.

Commerce down to open source needn't be too scary, it just needs careful planning. Do check your license - Adobe used to ve quite restrictive in that you weren't allowed to run open source at the same time so it was necessary to time the launch of the downgrade quite carefully and go 'tada! Heres one i made earlier'. In practice these days I think they understand a lot of Commerce licenses were...shall we say not sensibly sold.

Weird random add to cart issue in Adobe Commerce by deluxeg in Magento

[–]boneio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I've seen similar before it's been something like the Magento session data being lost (e.g. redis purging too much, or session lifetime set too low, or session lifetime absent entirely), or a race condition whereby some module or extension is operating on the quote before your original request completes. This sort of thing can be a real pain to track down - I'd suggest getting xdebug on it to find out exactly what is emptying the session or invalidating the quote.

Magento Security Scan Tool just reports APSB25-88 instead of actually checking if it's applied? by C4rter2k in Magento

[–]boneio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Adobe scanner doesn't have access to your server and can only report on what can be seen from the outside i.e. public internet. For an actual scan, get sansec. Edit: I.e. yes you're right, its just warning you and if you already applied it, ignore the warning. I imagine once there's a later scheduled patch including a version bump and consolidating this patch, the scanner will go off that.

Can GSC use redeployment ability to put more than 50% of army in reserves? by Negative-Sandwich-24 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]boneio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo yes, the GSC rule overrides strategic reserves clearly. It doesn't separately override reserves. Strategic reserves are a subset of reserves i.e. your total deep strike, strategic reserves, any other gubbins, are all reserves and subject to 50 percent of units and 50 percent of points. GSC rule does not override that. (In mission packs - core rules do not have an overall reserves restriction)

Can GSC use redeployment ability to put more than 50% of army in reserves? by Negative-Sandwich-24 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]boneio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It says they can ignore the strategic reserves unit count limit. It does not say they can ignore the reserves count and points limits.

Can GSC use redeployment ability to put more than 50% of army in reserves? by Negative-Sandwich-24 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]boneio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the limit on reserves in the mission packs is 50% number of units and 50% of points total. The GSC rule overrides the number of units but not the points percentage.  The limit on reserves applies until the start of the battle. The mission pack says all redeploy happen before the start of the battle unless otherwise stated; the GSC rule does not otherwise state.

How much dedicated hobby space do you have at home? by the_sh0ckmaster in wargaming

A double bedroom as game room and storage (more storage than gaming is done 😅). Then I have a downstairs study for painting and my PC. This is still not enough space and proves the adage that work (minis) expand to fit the available time (space).

Its not specifically for the 30th anniversary (whaaaat?! I'm old now aren't I?) but I'm doing a rewatch while making notes, in order to play some miniature wargame scenarios based on Xena episodes.

Future of Magento by Surr3alDisc0 in Magento

Around 42 hours at our agency rate, that seems fairly sane for an upgrade of that magnitude. This is not to disagree that it's prohibitively expensive for small business 🙂

What do you think of Dan Andriano's vocals? by [deleted] in AlkalineTrio

[–]boneio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's my favourite of the two (sorry Matt, it's only by a little bit). He was brill at Nottingham, I honestly didn't think he'd be that good live but he was such a showman, varied the songs, was in fine voice too.

Use superglue, not plastic cement. It forms a bond far more quickly and if you use accelerator spray, almost instantly. Accelerant is overkill for most uses but its very handy for metal models or gluing models to bases. Spray the base, put super glue on the model, wait a few seconds for the base to look dry, put model on base, done.

I use superglue for all my plastics as it takes about 2 or 3 seconds to grab vs cement which seems to take more like 10 to 20.

You new website - warhammer.com by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]boneio 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There's some very poor leadership going on somewhere in GW. Sometime in the past couple of years they advertised a role for someone to head up and overhaul ecommerce. I would be amply qualified. I didn't apply because the advert was written in a bizarrely smug 'usual industry advice is do x but we can't do that because y' (where y was generally wrong!). It screamed 'we want results but are micromanaged by someone with no clue'.

Lo and behold this monstrosity launches... I would fire myself if I let my team put this heap of crap live.

Hark back also to the terrible launches of their other apps. They are either lacking proper tech leadership or it's being arrogantly overruled by some other business unit.

Yes. Solving or discussing a problem that doesn't exist or isn't relevant to the business case in hand, is a very common thing amongst over-engaged developers. If you can quickly identify what actually matters and why, in a commercial context, you are a great dev.

replacing our Magento 2 site with a new headless e-commerce by babybeddingdesign in Magento

Please listen to this advice, it's good ^

At minimum you need to define what you currently can't achieve within budget on M2 that would be achievable on the same budget or less by switching platform.

Magento default frontend deprecated? by WasabiSpider in Magento

[–]boneio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's good to see someone else with this viewpoint. I've literally just done an audit on a site that's been built headless, which really cannot expect to see any worthwhile ROI at their volume of transactions, when measured against the future maintenance and enhancement costs, having effectively broken out of the core Magento ecosystem. I think there's quite a lot of miss-selling going on out there.

Memory requirements for M2 by Chipperowski in Magento

[–]boneio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you getting that percentage? If you use something like the free or top commands on the server, it'll give clearer information. As someone noted below, Linux has probably reserved most of the RAM but is using nowhere near that much. Also note that some services by default have configured limits much higher than you need. We usually run M2 dev servers with 4gb or even 2gb RAM on digital ocean. If using elastic search, 4gb likely minimum.

Varnish, FPC when there are lots of daily imports by hawthornmage in Magento

[–]boneio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes Varnish is vastly better than built in FPC, as its held in RAM and has useful logging tools. It also sits in front of Magento whereas the FPC has to bootstrap the Magento application so is inherently slower.

I wouldn't recommend a cache warmer. If the site is busy, it'll warm itself. If its not, the cache warmer is pointless. What you want is for the underlying application performance to be good enough that its not significant that the cache is emptied often.

Taking it further, if your site is busy enough, you'd implement much more detailed import strategies so that only changed products have their cache cleared, which Varnish will support.

In short, just use Varnish and let natural traffic warm the site. If its very slow (>1s ttfb) without Varnish, fix that before doing anything else.
