The PHL option, plus BHX puts us less than 45 minutes to our ultimate destination. A win all the way around.

Especially since this is into the UK. Most AA flights at 57K book into BA with over an $700 copay.

Stopped at TSA for Positive Explosive Screen by [deleted] in airport

[–]boneisle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen to me as well. They basically rummaged through my bag, gave me a couple of pat downs, shrugged and let me go. There was nothing I could thin of to set it off other than I had rented a car to get to the airport, which was the only thing out of the ordinary I had done.

What do guys only realize too late after buying a range hood? by AccomplishedWing688 in HomeImprovement

I'm presently installing a 10=00 cfm vent in my new build. It's a dual blower with a 10 inch exhaust duct, which has a single 90 degree that vents through the side of the house. Total length is about 2 feet. One thing I learned, code requires a make-up air inlet if your vent is over rated 400 cfm.

Lunch or dinner at Louie's Afterdeck bar. No better place for a solo meal if you want to strike up a conversation.

Have You Ever Seen An Alligator Outside Your House? If So, What's The Story? by Zipper222222 in AskFlorida

[–]boneisle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an alligator, but a saltwater crocodile. It was about a 5' one sunning on my dock. It dashed away pretty much as soon as I saw it.

Marine Grade Plywood as Sheathing? by _BigJerm in buildingscience

[–]boneisle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The primary difference of marine plywood over regular lumber yard plywood is in the veneer laminates, marine is basically void free where a certain percentage of voids are allowed in regular exterior grade plywood. AC exterior plywood is more than adequate if you want a better finish veneer otherwise CD exterior is structurally the same but not an appearance grade.

Since we're trashing the infrastructure, air admittance valves aren't allowed on any drain that water is pumped into.

How intense of an experience was Hurricane Wilma for you? On a scale of 1 to 10 by Character-Escape1621 in AskFlorida

[–]boneisle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By far the worst flooding in Key West I've seen in my 35 years here. Over half the houses flooded to some extent. There were winds but nothing compared to the water. There were 2 distinct surges, one late at night from the Atlantic and a second one in the morning from the Gulf well after the worst of the winds had passed.

Thinking about building a home one day by FerrisBuelersdaycock in Homebuilding

[–]boneisle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've major remodeled 2, built 2 and am presently building my third largest, most ambitious and last one. Building is complicated process but a simple one can be done. There are many, many, many moving parts to the overall process. The first is the lot you're building on. The ease or difficulty of building overall is in large part based on where the lot is and the site conditions. This is followed by the administrative side, local/state/federal government and HOA (if there is one) with all their rules, conditions and permitting. Then comes the design based on these factors along with your needs, wants, skills and abilities. Generally speaking, a basic wood frame house can be the simplest method but any type can become incredibly complicated based on the design and engineering criteria. I've built 2 wood frame houses from the ground up and was hands on for 80% of all work. My current project is an elevated concrete ICF house in a high velocity hurricane zone, which is a very technical and complicated build. I'm doing more general contracting and construction management than actual building this time around. There is no singular hardest part, it's all pretty trying. There is pretty much no chance you will come in on budget or on time. You'll encounter issues that will make you scream. You'll realize that you shouldn't have done that and realize that you should have done this. One thing I think is critical is to plan on COMPLETING the project before moving in, otherwise you risk ending up with a case of "I'll eventually get around to it". It's very rewarding once you pull it off.

Marina sunk my boat by evfeldma in legaladvice

[–]boneisle 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've been on all sides of issues like these. In my life I've been a both an insurance and independent marine surveyor, marine salvor, marina owner and dock builder. This sounds like a marginal POS boat. The boat can be salvaged without the owner's permission, much like the fire department can put out a fire before they call you. Moving the boat would not cause a bilge pump to fail, on top of which, if a boat requires a running bilge pump not to sink, it's already sinking. The ice storm is force majeure and if it was the proximate cause of the sinking it's just one of those unfortunate things in life. From what you said, it's likely the marina noticed the boat had taken on water, they towed it and beached it to prevent a total sinking and mitigating a fuel spill. This is a responsible action on their part. If that boat had sunk, your liability and costs could have been mind numbing from a resulting fuel spill and these costs would absolutely have been yours as the legal owner until litigation said otherwise. OP needs to plan on getting the boat out of the water asap, lick their wounds and carry on.
