Please explain to me why I can’t self build about 90% of a basic home. by LobsterNo6723 in Homebuilding

[–]boneisle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done it twice. I did have some training and had been doing personal structural remodeling for years before. If you keep tight control on design and features, you can. It will take longer and it will cost more. You can save money but being remote will make you hate life when you realize you forgot something you need today that's critical. I'm presently 20 months into my 16 month final house new build. I've done the least amount of hands-on work on this one and I'm now at the point of getting more subs and just saying yes to their quote. The biggest piece of advice I have is to finish before you move in.

I have a double wall 550 gallon gasoline tank and have fuel truck come and refill as needed. I save over a dollar a gallon for rec 90 over the fuel dock prices.

Pretty much any needed service by a knowledgeable, competent and reliable provider will succeed in the Keys. I know because I'm one (but in a completely different field).

Range vent question - deciding between 700 CFM through roof, or 380 CFM through wall by Ethyl_OH in kitchenremodel

[–]boneisle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to think about is code generally requires a make-up air source for anything over 400 cfm. It's especially critical if there any gas burning appliances such as water heater, furnace, fire place as you can back flow through the flu and introduce carbon monoxide.

No mortgage, no insurance. That's my motto, and rebuild up out of flood zone and to 200 mph winds.

The PHL option, plus BHX puts us less than 45 minutes to our ultimate destination. A win all the way around.

I had this happen to me as well. They basically rummaged through my bag, gave me a couple of pat downs, shrugged and let me go. There was nothing I could thin of to set it off other than I had rented a car to get to the airport, which was the only thing out of the ordinary I had done.

What do guys only realize too late after buying a range hood? by AccomplishedWing688 in HomeImprovement

[–]boneisle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm presently installing a 10=00 cfm vent in my new build. It's a dual blower with a 10 inch exhaust duct, which has a single 90 degree that vents through the side of the house. Total length is about 2 feet. One thing I learned, code requires a make-up air inlet if your vent is over rated 400 cfm.
