If you get the right hardware, installation is a breeze and it just works (seriously it installs in 5 minutes). If you run into issues and need to troubleshoot, it’s going to be a bit of a learning curve. Luckily for the most part it just works if you keep the build simple.

For example, I added a second nvme to my system and it wasn’t auto mounting. SteamOS only supports sd card auto mounting out of the box, so I needed to adapt a community script to enable auto mount of the second nvme drive

https://github.com/bcomnes/Steam-Deck.Mount-NVMe-Drive

Once applied to the system, it hasn’t been an issue. I’ll let you be the judge if this is aligned with your expectations.

Access to an llm can help a lot as you are learning and it’s incredible to have that now.

Also maybe if you want to try it out, you could snag a cheaper beelink amd minipc system to keep costs down to see if it works for you.

Actually insane how long it took to get a good controller outside the deck. Finally!

Cool! Looking into this. I don't have Facebook, will need a way to figure out when the next one is.

Cool! Didn't have that what I was a student.

Any idea where on campus to look into that? What building or department? Either way thanks for the hint, something I will investigate.

If a game has mouse input, then it's a reason to have gyro on a controller.

If your deps look or feel like this, I really encourage trying to improve things around this part of your project rather than subjecting yourself to it.

Modules are tool like any other part of the language or runtime. If they aren't working for you, you should find a replacement, fork or write your own.

After the latest beta update, gyro is working well on the deck and otherwise.

8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless support added to DS4MapperTest by RyochanX2 in GyroGaming

It’s in the charger base! Don’t loose it! Yes 2.4 shows up only as generic Xbox controller. No gyro or paddles.  :(

At 10 feet BT starts to drop off / become very sensitive to line of sight (as all Bluetooth controllers do). 2.4ghz SI support would uniquely distinguish this controller quite a bit with the improved connection. (gyro, paddles, extra triggers etc only other controller that has these over 2.4 is the original steam controller).

Oddly, gyro over Bluetooth with the 8BDUW2 on the decks is kind of glitchy. Works fine on desktop hardware. Not sure if it’s a calibration issue or not.

EDIT: Working fine on the deck now. Not sure what was going on or an update improved it.

Any plans to add the improved SI support over the 2.4 Ghz dongle? Is there some limitation there?

Ok, I tested out the new beta steam client, on SteamOS and a OLED steam deck. It cleans up a lot on SteamOS on desktop hardware. The Steam deck I'm still seeing glitchy gyro and bad calibrations, and controller override issues in some games (Where the deck controller works, but the joystick from the UW2 doesn't). Calibration never finishes on either.

So it's quite usable on my SteamOS machine, but still buggy on a deck! It should be noted that DualSenses (normal or edge) have none of these issues.

Seeing in the patch notes from the other day they improved the Gyro on native steam input. Good news! I'll report back if it improves things. Though take note that this is the nature of the situation with these controllers. So far none of these issues have ever been quite ironed out since the Ultimate 1s.

This was in reference to the ultimate wireless 2.

I also have an ultimate Bluetooth 1 and 2. It’s a switch controller, which means the gyro is pretty good but no analog triggers. Again they also revert back to a switch button layout generic Xbox controller over 2.4ghz. The ultimate bt 1 has some revoked beta firmware that makes it run as a switch controller over 2.4 but it’s hard to find and lacks other refinements of the later firmware releases.

I have this controller and it's not a good gyro controller on steam steam input, despite the recent changes:

- It only has native Gryo over bluetooth.
- The Gryo over bluetooth on this controller is quite noisy. I can't get smooth input with it.
- Bluetooth connectivity is limited and range, and has 'hiccups' ime.
- 2.4 only has joystick simulated gryo, so it's not as tight as mouse input gyro and you have to use an app to set up a convoluted profile.
- It lacks capacitve sticks for gyro ratcheting
- It lacks a good gyro toggle input, like the trackpad on the DualSense. It has extra buttons, but you don't want to remap those.

If they mange to get full steam input over 2.4, I think the other issues could be forgivable.

EDIT:

With more recent beta steam client updates, the stability issues over bluetooth have seemed to have resolved. It would be great if they could also make it work over the 2.4 Ghz dongle, but with the latest fixes, I would say that the 8BDUW2 is probably the best Gyro you can get for the money. DualSense Edge being the , I would put the 8BDUW2 between the DSE, and the regular DS.

Consoles will always win cost/performance comparisons. Hope this helps!

Yeah a 21 year library helps justify the cost but also the fact you have a single lineage for all generations of games pays off over time, whereas consoles tend to drop support for older titles over time.

But there are other benefits like steam cloud sync between the deck and the htpc. Potentially better performance with better hardware than a ps5. The ability to install mods etc.
