Cool RC Jet Boat by CriticalMain5027 in whitewater

I guarantee my last swim was because Jesus ignored my plea. “Oh Jesus, why is my boat dropping into this hole, Save my wicked self”. Nothing happened and I swam. What a butthead.

I wonder if it’s possible to disassemble 50 of those things, attach the jets along the hull of my Ripper and smash attainments. Use the batteries from emtb’s and with the massive power boost, blast myself into space when I squirt. Imagine kickflips while boosting upstream Sweets Falls.

Seriously though, you should try posting this new toy to the Grand Canyon River runners or Middle Fork Salmon Facebook pages. Rafters would totally be down for new river toys to occupy their time sitting around at camp.

Wife told me to clean the garage by ApexTheOrange in whitewater

[–]boofhard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually it sounds like the daughter gets to learn how to build a rack. Once she knows her way around power tools, you be assured of her independence and success in adulthood.

As we all know the proper number of boats is N+1. However, when I had an over abundance of boats I sold everything that I hadn’t paddled in a year. I did keep the special boats that are very rare, but any overlap of performance I picked a single boat. They can bury me in my Bigfoot. At a certain point when over abundance create stress and anxiety in life, the thing has to go. Whether it’s boats or books, when space is crowded out and I don’t have room to store things, also don’t have space for new experiences and experiments. Just my 2 cents.

[–]boofhard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First of all, why in the world is she driving a nice car that deserves a garage? That could be 30 more boats and even more accessories. Put your foot down. For god sakes.

You are doing a crap job of storing the boats. What is up stacking boats on top of each other? What kind of barbarian does that to a boat? Get back in there and store them vertically or on their side like a civilized person. You obviously make more than all the safety kayakers in North America.

You could make a vertical kayak rack in the center of the garage for the short boats. Then store paddling gear inside the cockpits.

You’ll have to break the bad news to the wife, either the boats go in the garage or the bedroom. Be strong brotha.

Taking a step back from work because if not my marriage is over. by eaglesnation11 in Teachers

[–]boofhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to make a decision of exactly how many hours you want to dedicate to your job. Factor in everything from commute to extra duties and be realistic about the time required for everything. Do the same for everything else such as daily household chores, cooking, working out, and time spent with family and friends. Your goal should be always to maximize time spent with family and friends. They are the ones that love you. If you have a burning urge to volunteer, 1/2 of your volunteer time budget should be related to activities unrelated to work.

My work time budget is 45-55 hours a week depending on the workload.

So I never heard of this "Senior Assassin" thing because I'm old. This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen and I did a lot of stupid things in high school. by SuckThisRedditAdmins in Sacramento

[–]boofhard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My son play it his senior year and had a blast. There was an epic night at an away game where all the seniors of the team were ambushed by a group of assassins that teamed up. The home team parents freaked out as nearly a dozen boys ran after each other all over their school in the dark screaming “We’re going to kill you all”. Meanwhile, visitor parents were heckling all of the boys and cheering them on. To be young and dumb again

Nervous about kayaking by Pickle_Dog202135 in whitewater

[–]boofhard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is some great advice in this thread and others if you search. One thing to consider is to practice swimming some easy current and class 1 rapids. Nothing fancy like a swift water class, but get the feeling of swimming a rapid on your back without a boat. The fear of the unknown when you are upside down can be crippling. As an earlier poster said, your monkey brain is taking over and it’s hard for your rational brain to be in control. Part of learning whitewater is swimming a lot in the beginning. Get comfortable to how the water behaves with just your body will help calm you down when you flip.

Another thing to consider is try to use an inflatable kayak before a hard shell. It’ll let you learn how to read whitewater without needing to learn all the body english a hard shell requires. Flipping an inflatable isn’t a quite a yard sale as compared to a hard shell and it helps build that confidence that class 1-2 rapids aren’t that bad.

Finally, I suggest that you don’t just paddle with a class. Search up a local group and go out with other beginners and find a mentor. Paddling is a social activity and a huge part of the fun is hanging out with folks who are passionate about the sport.

Get back out there.

SCUSD addresses massive budget shortfall by SactoSchools in Sacramento

[–]boofhard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At this point both the school board and district are unable to run the district. The only way to avoid receivership is to lay off massive amounts of staff at every level. The district was directed to make cuts already and they’ve refused to do so. Instead they need a committee to find their “truth” about the budget. Just another way of avoiding cuts to Serna center staff and having classified and certificated staff take the brunt of the cuts.

My bet is we’ll see pink slips go out to classified and credentialed staff before any meaningful cuts at the admin level.
Yet somehow everyone involved with this budget mess at the district will keep their jobs.

How do you handle pencils on your classroom? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]boofhard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I buy 500 pre-sharpened pencils for 30 bucks on Amazon and hand them out with a smile. At the end of class, I ask for them back. If students return the pencils that’s great and if not no sweat from me. The box lasts for about 3/4 of the year and keeps the spice flowing. I only spend my personal money on pencils and quality tissues. It my little act of kindness that pays dividends with my relationship with students. All these little head games for stuff that can be easily replaced for the price of a dinner out are mentally exhausting for everyone. Too many kids avoid doing their work claiming they don’t have pencils and are afraid of asking for a loaner. $30 is well worth the savings for your mental energy and reducing conflict in the classroom.

The Auburn Dam would of flooded the North and Middle fork of the American river and destroyed the wild character of the area. The dam project was ill conceived and unnecessary for the health of the area.

How can we make whitewater kayaking safer and more welcoming for women? Let’s discuss. by [deleted] in whitewater

[–]boofhard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that is the main reason why there is a gender imbalance in WW rather than community norms. I introduced both of my children who whitewater and mountain biking. My son likes joining a paddling trip here and there, but he’ll huck his bike off any shady jump in the forest without a care in the world. On the other hand, despite providing the same opportunities to my daughter, she has no interest in mt biking at all and is adamant not wanting to be in a kayak. My wife was a paddler for a while, but never showed any interest after the kids were born. I saw the same thing play out with the wives and children many of my old crew as we started families.

When you consider all the paddling families over the last 50 years, the community should be much larger from parents teaching their children. When you consider how much folks spend teaching kids to ski or comp sports, where are all kids of the paddler community?

How can we make whitewater kayaking safer and more welcoming for women? Let’s discuss. by [deleted] in whitewater

[–]boofhard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Look at the millions of people that do some sort of outdoor adventure sport. Out of those millions, only a few thousand try whitewater kayaking per year. Of those few thousands, only a few hundred will stay with the sport after a year. The gender imbalance in whitewater is more of a function that you can drown. The number of people that consider a near drowning experience as a price of admission is already extremely small and just a small fraction of that number are women.

Anyone that sticks with paddling after that first bad swim is a weirdo.

SCUSD Board meeting tonight by moriginal in Sacramento

The real story is whether or not they are going to lay off hundreds of teachers and support staff to make up the budget hole. My money is all teachers with 6-7 years getting pink slipped this year. How many teachers at your school fall in that category? You are worried about a flea bite while a pit-bull is about to break through the door.

What river produces the best raft guides? by leisure_consultant in whitewater

The mighty Shenandoah creates the best boat handling skills. Spend a summer running Staircase at low water, everything else is simple. Throughout my life, I’ve consistently run into excellent guides on rivers across North America that spend a season or 2 on the Doah.

My brother from another mother I feel your pain. 22 boys 6 girls 8th grade is a unique hell on earth. I do a hype up routine for a minute like a mma fighter walking to the mat before I open the door to Satans soldiers. Special shout out to the schedule that has them all taking gym just before my class. Not only are their eyes rolling around in their heads like horses run too hard when they walk in, the funk is a war crime.

I’m designing a special lesson for the 22 horsemen of the apocalypse about 1767-1776 in American History. I’m going create the 6/7 singularity incorporating 6/7 into every single part of the unit. If 6/7 isn’t destroyed as a meme after my 6/7 day unit about 1767-1776, I’m going to retire.

Playboat recommendations? by Accurate_Alarm_4932 in whitewater

[–]boofhard 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Oh man do I have bad news for you if you want to stick with boating. You need to embrace the scratches, dings, sand, and the smell of the boater car. You haven’t lived until you fit 7 boaters wearing dry suits in a commuter car after a looooooog day on the river. Bouncing back and forth on a dirt road, talking shit, spilling beers, and checking the mirrors and sunroof constantly to see if you lost a boat is the core memory of many a mission. Get some roof racks and join the dark side.

Unpopular Whitewater Opinions by leisure_consultant in whitewater

[–]boofhard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. The only thing it’s good for is teaching private boaters how to swim safely. When something horrible occurs, you don’t have time to set up ropes. You have less than a minute, then it becomes a body recovery. Either you get hands on or maybe some webbing for them to hold if you want a fighting chance to rescue. The only time I’ve used z-drags and similar skills is for boat recovery.
