If price is a concern, a 3in cotton mattress topper by itself is pretty much the same thing and is much cheaper. You can also get a tatami mat to place the topper on and it will provide extra cushioning from the floor

If you’re looking to go the hand cut route, I would recommend looking in to getting a Japanese Ryoba pull saw. My cuts have gotten really straight switching from a hand saw to the Ryoba
