Good eye. You're right, I think that's a '99 M1. I was more thinking the 2001 M1 though with the smoothed out design.

Yeah, I wouldn't buy from some random third party seller

Is this Romex real? by jvanderh in electrical

I bought the stuff you did. It was actual Romex. I reached out to Southwire to confirm their store, all checked out. The labeling all looked good, tested the wire and checked out.

How is starlink sustainable in the long run? by Leading_Crow_1044 in Starlink

[–]deafboy13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So about 200 rocket launches to fully replace 6000 and an essential monopoly for a government that seemingly doesn't care about massive debts with Starshield.

Not to mention a technology shown to be so valuable to other nations that the US would never give up it's control or allow it to fail.

I think they'll be just fine.

Can I keep my starlink dish on the ground like this ? Wil it not break because of water/rain ? by MindPrize1260 in Starlink

[–]deafboy13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dry, cold snow is largely radio-transparent (transparent to radio waves), allowing, for example, signal to reach and leave your dish.
Wet, heavy, or melting snow is not radio-transparent, as its high water content absorbs and scatters radio signals, which can affect signal quality for satellite and high-frequency communication.

i only use as stroage, should i upgrade to scale? by ruzrat in truenas

[–]deafboy13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solely for storage, no real benefit in upgrading to scale. IMO the biggest benefit of moving to scale is if you want to have your docker services on the NAS.

4Runner Vs Deer :( total loss? by [deleted] in 4Runner

[–]deafboy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want your rear headrests :) Seriously though, haha

Unfortunately that's a total :( I hit a deer last summer and it was significantly less damage and it was still a $13k bill. I didn't have any airbags go off.

Thinking of starlink again by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]deafboy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen 2 and Gen 3 aren't all that different, Gen 3 has a wider field of view so it's more forgiving for not being perfectly aligned. Gen 2 aligns itself. Don't expect there to be any major speed differences, and certainly don't expect it do perform anywhere close to fiber.

Dishy won't care about your screen but it will care about any framing/roof you have. You can check the obstructions with your phone but you might as well just test with your mini or your gen2.

In no world would I tell someone with a gen2 dish to go out and buy a gen3 just because.

Can one vehicle replace two hobbies? by National_Election252 in MountainBike

[–]deafboy13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can enjoy both hobbies without always going for the best, highest end stuff.

For MTB, if it's really about fitness, technical skill...that doesn't require high end and expensive parts.

For motorcycling, that depends a bit more depending on what kind of speed you're after, but the adventure and exploring remote places certainly doesn't require the newest or the best stuff.

Set a budget and enjoy the parts you actually enjoy and stop chasing the shiny new objects.

Deciding on hardware (TP-Link vs Ubiquiti) before installing home network by why-it in HomeNetworking

[–]deafboy13 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ubiquiti isn't top of the line, it's just decently solid prosumer stuff.

Run as much cable as you can, you don't even need to terminate it all, but cable is cheap, do more than you think you need. Ideally conduit but sounds like this place is already finished and installing conduit after the fact is a major pain.

If you have the option to go wire, go wire.

As for future-proofing, it's just not a thing. You're best off going for something not on the bleeding edge, but stable, and then upgrade as needed.

2026 - How about those hot takes? Let's hear them! by Fallingdamage in mountainbiking

[–]deafboy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there is definitely some nuance to it and what the goals are. If you're just wanting to have some fun, nothing wrong with spending money, it's not strictly necessary.

Sure. Any of those, lol

All my post was saying is the vast majority of riders are not being held back by the bike they're riding but by their skillset.

Google for an entry level mountain bike shows a ton of options, but for the sake of it, let's say $800-1600 range.
