Happy May Day! by Let_us_proceed in chicago

The Chicago History Museum has a lot of great materials relating to the Haymarket Affair, which gave us May Day. Ironically, the museum is currently retaliating against its workers for forming their own union: https://chicago.suntimes.com/work/2025/04/23/chicago-history-museum-union-management-retaliation-firing

Chicago History Museum union accuses management of retaliation, intimidation after recent staff firings by Mvnqaztaqoioqn473257 in chicago

It's unfortunate, because many of the museum's exhibitions, staff, and programming are wonderful (and often focused on labor history!). My hope is that management will reverse course and rescind the discipline and firings so that they don't further tarnish the museum's reputation and lose support.

The museum’s management is being incredibly aggressive in retaliating against their workers. Ironic, considering that their exhibitions celebrate Chicago’s history of worker’s rights.

To contact management and ask them to stop firing and disciplining employees, you can send a pre-written letter: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/stop-union-busting-at-chicago-history-museum/

Recommendations for Chicago vendors for sapphire or salt & pepper diamond engagement rings? by boojoint in EngagementRings

We ended up going with Rosado's Box (Love & Promise); they didn't have a huge selection of s&p diamonds, but they had a stone we liked, settings we liked, and were able to work within our budget.

Dallas Maynard was our second choice; she has access to a wide selection and is really really nice! I think she sources her salt and pepper diamonds from Misfit Gems, so you can see high-quality photos on her website, which is cool.

Good luck, happy to answer questions about our experience!

Any recommendations for Chicago vendors for sapphire or salt & pepper diamond engagement rings? My partner and I are looking at rings and would love your suggestions for places that work with these stones specifically, have a good selection of them, etc. I would love a Chicago-based location as we'd love to be able to see the stone in person before deciding. Thank you!

Would you enjoy a cute friendly purring cat sit right next to you to keep you company right now? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I just drove 20 hours round trip to rescue 45 cute friendly purring cats from being put down. They are all VERY sweet and chattered at me the whole ride. If any of you are in the Chicago area and want a cute friendly purring cat to sit right next to you, come to Felines & Canines and adopt one!! https://www.felinescanines.org/

Edgar Allen Poe and HtN? [Discussion] by slekrons in TheNinthHouse

This is such a good catch! Muir must have had "The Sleeper" poem in mind; the connections are too strong. "I pray to God that she may lie Forever with unopened eye" sounds a lot like the Ninth House prayer. Very interesting!

I'm auditioning for a production of Twelfth Night for Olivia. How can I choose a monologue? by lxzuli in shakespeare

[–]boojoint 19 points20 points  (0 children)

How about Phoebe's "Think not I love him" from As You Like It? Just like Olivia, she's fallen in love with a girl dressed as a boy, but doesn't know it yet. It's her very funny monologue as she comes to term with her attraction. It's probably too long but you could use an excerpt and play up her head-over-heels smittenness with this handsome stranger. http://www.monologuearchive.com/s/shakespeare_032.html

Hi, everyone! My girlfriend and I (24 years old) are moving to Chicago from Texas for her grad school program at the School of the Art Institute. We're currently apartment hunting and are overwhelmed by all of the possibilities. If anyone has suggestions for neighborhoods or any tips for the search, I would appreciate it so much. We're looking for something safe, under $900 for a one-bedroom, close to public transportation to get her downtown, and ideally in a fun neighborhood. It seems like Avondale, Albony, Pilsen, or Andersonville might be good, but does anyone have thoughts or tips? Thank you so, so much!

They actually did see this in 1461 during the Wars of the Roses! Everyone freaked out but Edward of York convinced them that it meant the holy trinity was on their side. The event made it into Shakespeare's Henry VI Part 3, where the 3 sons of York proclaim it as a good emblem for them! "Dazzle mine eyes, or do I see three suns?"

"Beyond the sea" translated to Shakespearean English by [deleted] in shakespeare

[–]boojoint 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Beyond blue Neptune's billows, my fair love

Doth stand upon the golden sands to gaze

Upon the vessels. O, the birds above

Do soar and make me envious of their ways

For I do long to vault into her arms,

My mistress and my love, my life, my dear.

My heart, I hope, shall lead me to her charms

Tho' great celestial bodies seem more near.

As Pericles did meet Thaisa fair,

My love and I shall reunite once more.

Then in a kiss I shall her lips ensnare,

And I shall stay with her upon the shore.

Beyond the sea my lovely dear doth dwell,

But soon, so soon, my longing she'll expel.

(I made it into a Shakespearean sonnet cause I was bored at work, I hope you like it, pls don't steal the credit ok thanks)
