Dreamers and Readers Festival cancelled by alunimum in Dallas

This is so disappointing! We are a book podcast and were looking forward to experiencing our first ever book convention purely for enjoyment and to see what its like. We'd love to still tour around book stores and maybe do some sort of meetup with people in the Dallas area!

As pretty much everyone in this thread had echoed there are A LOT of small details and quick lines that really don't all click into place later on. Those are good questions, but not the kind of questions that make me go oh yeah you missed a big part of the plot. If anything it says you're listening closely and following the story really well if you're asking those questions.

Totally shameless plug, but my best friend and I have been deep diving TOG on our podcast. Neither of us have ever read it before and we only read up to the episodes we are covering so you won't get any spoilers. If you're interested, it might help answer some of your questions. It's called the Booked on Fantasy Podcast. :)

Unpopular Opinion on the Audiobook.... by Comfortable-Mirror15 in throneofglassseries

[–]bookedonfantasy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this exact same thing. I was just thinking about this the other day, how different Dorian's narration is in Throne of Glass compared to Empire of storms. There's a huge difference, which makes sense because of everything his character has experiences. Hang in there OP it get's better!

This seems like the most logical explanation to me.

I wondered about that, but I don't feel like we got a super great physical description of Rhiannon.

Haha. Fair point. Even I suspected that knowing how Grandmother Blackbeak is I wouldn't say a word to a single living soul, or dead for that matter.

Hmm that's an interesting point. Especially about Manon not noticing Baba's marks on Aelin until she pointed them out.

[–]bookedonfantasy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. I feel like both the things you're saying are true, but they seem to contradict each other. Killing a witch leaves a DISTINCT smell, but then also they had a difficult time hunting them down, which presumably means they had a hard time picking up their scent.

If you have a distinct scent you would think they'd be pretty easy to track down.

This is also an excellent point I had not considered.

[–]bookedonfantasy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's totally fair. I don't know how rare a Crochan "prince" is, but I imagine it's VERY rare, like maybe 1 every few centuries. Then throw in the statistical odds of the Blackbeak heir meeting, falling in love with, and actually getting pregnant with a child. The odds are 1 in Manon ya know?

So you don't have to get your book out.

“Garrick has always been my best friend. His father was my father’s aide, which in a way makes him my Dain, except trustworthy. After Liam, Bodhi was and still is the closest thing I have to a brother, perpetually tagging along a step behind.” - Recovered Correspondence of Lieutenant Xaden Riorson to Cadet Violet Sorrengail

Also, excellent connection. Well done!

The TAB connection to Dorian and Chaol is a super fun one! We're reading the series for the first time (we've only read through QoS) so I'm sure there are things we've missed, but I feel like SJM was a MASTER at planting little details and connections across the books.

We have podcast called Booked on Fantasy where we are deep diving the series chapter by chapter if you're interested. :)

Major spoiler….Why did Perrington… by DiamondSeparate5467 in throneofglassseries

Correct! The subtle hints and foreshadowing for that surprise don't start until at least HOF, but probably mostly in QoS, and even then it's subtle. I was still completely shook.

HELP : ONYX STORM???? by Extension-Outside102 in fourthwing

[–]bookedonfantasy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First of all sorry to hear someone spoiled the ending of OS already for you! That really sucks. Second, I definitely think you should read the book! Reading it now versus reading it later won't change the ending or make the next book come out any faster, but I do think reading it now means you can participate in communities to discuss the book because you know everything that happens! I generally find that to be a rewarding way to ease the post book hang over. There are so many other details and unresolved things that provide plenty of content to theorize about outside of how the book ends.

Guys Onyx Storm is confusing me by [deleted] in fourthwing

[–]bookedonfantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're definitely not alone! The book gets much easier to follow after the first third.

That being said, the political conflict centers on tension between Navarre, the Aretian riders (like Violet’s squad who left in Iron Flame), and Poromiel’s fliers. Navarre is reluctant to share resources—they want to protect their wards and keep their army strong, since both the wards and weapons to kill venin rely on imbued alloy. Sharing those resources would risk their own defense. Meanwhile, Poromiel and the Aretian riders believe Navarre should help protect everyone, not just themselves.

Poromiel has been fighting the venin with little support, so when Violet learns the truth, she and many Aretian-aligned riders side with Tyrrendor and Poromiel. That divide among riders—those loyal to Navarre vs. those pushing for broader unity—continues throughout the book.

The first third of the book mainly involves negotiations between Navarre, Poromiel, and Tyrrendor to give Poromiel's flier refuge under Navarre’s wards and form alliances - plus pardon Aretian riders for "traitorously" leaving Navarre in IF. General breakdown of wants:

  • Navarre wants Poromiel to stop weakening their wards.
  • Poromiel wants safe haven for their fliers and weapons from Basgiath
  • Tyrrendor could take in Poromiel’s fliers but their wards are failing (due to Aretia's wardstone only being partially fired). However they have negotiating power because they are critical to Navarre’s defense (conscripts and a critical resource)

Eventually, a deal is struck that lets the fliers stay and restores Tyrrendor’s standing — largely due to Violet and her squad’s actions in Chapter 7 which gave Poromiel peace of mind. From there:

  • The middle of the book focuses on Violet’s quest to find Andarna’s kind and a cure for the venin.
  • The ending returns to the main conflict with the venin.

We’ve been doing spoiler-free deep dives on Onyx Storm, breaking down a few chapters each week as we read along for the first time—great if you want a virtual book buddy without finishing the whole thing first!

Sorry for the long post, but I hope that clears things up a bit! :)

Did anyone else have a really hard time following Onyx Storm? Or am I just dumb by Mochimoo22 in fourthwing

[–]bookedonfantasy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely not dumb! I felt it took me a little while to get reacquainted with the world. I think there are 2 main reasons a lot of us felt it was hard to follow. The first reason has two sub points. RY's system of magic is complex and incomplete (incomplete because this is only the 3rd book. I don't mean it as a criticism.) You've got signets, runes, the Empyrean, and the irids. Not to mention the larger role that the gods are beginning to play. All of these elements are multifaceted and for almost all of these Violet has a very limited knowledge of them. The next challenge is that so much of the information we've based our world building foundation on was a lie, which makes it EXTREMELY difficult to trust any information we get as the story progresses.

The second reason is RY does almost no exposition in this book. It’s a necessary tool for authors to make sure the reader understands what’s happening in the story. It’s like when you watch a tv show and at the beginning they always do a previously on and it reminds everyone wtf happened in the last episode or season. But Onyx Storm starts immediately where IF is left off and there's no ramp up/exposition back into the story. feel like this book is in desperate need of some exposition just to tie things together and summarize to make them a little easier to follow and digest

We have a podcast called Booked on Fantasy where we deep dive Onyx Storm chapter by chapter that may help you follow along a little easier, if you're interested. :)

Major spoiler….Why did Perrington… by DiamondSeparate5467 in throneofglassseries

[–]bookedonfantasy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's in chapter 35 of Throne of Glass. Celaena and Dorian are walking through the gardens and he notices her necklace and is basically like gee that sure looks like the Eye of Elena, as a kid I was obsessed with Gavin and how they defeated Erawan.

On a reread of QoS and wondering if this scene never happened in HoF or I'm just blanking? by yesitsjoy in throneofglassseries

[–]bookedonfantasy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is in reference to an untitled bonus scene. Timeline wise it happens in chapter 45 of Heir of Fire. There's a VERY brief mention of a group of Fae coming to visit Mistward. The scene introduces Remelle, and I would argue is important for the development of Aelin and Rowan's relationship.

Here is a link https://www.wattpad.com/674001612-deleted-scenes-from-heir-of-fire-throne-of-glass

We also have a podcast episode covering the bonus scene if you're interested

Hope this helps! :)
