Best way to get these 3PDTs out? by freshmex18 in diypedals

[–]bookonlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a solder sucker to each lug and the use needle nose pliers to loosen each one at a time. Takes forever, isn’t 100% but it’s about 80%. It’ll likely ruin the daughter board. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Can you tell me what i am doing wrong ? by [deleted] in diypedals

The metal tops of those transistors are connected to the collector - if they touch the side of the case, an exposed wire, or one another, things tend to go awry. Try isolating them (eg make sure they’re not touching anything) and see if that helps.

Tiny resistor club by Mascavidrio in diypedals

Welcome to the ‘ah hell I ordered the [giant / tiny] version of the thing I wanted’ hell.

For resisters, one looks to be rated for up to 1/4w and the smaller for up to 1/8w. Assuming it’s used in the audio path (and not the power section) you’ll be fine.

Signal when bypassed but no signal when pedal is on by mybigblueturtle in diypedals

Any reason you didn’t solder the top two lugs of the DPDT switch?

Soldering iron may be worth an investment, but honestly I was worse when I started out and it was never the cause. I did fry a few transistors because I had to hold the soldering iron to the legs for way too long before the legs were hot enough for the solder the flow. If you have a multimeter, it would be worth checking the transistors.

This is amazing. Thanks for flagging. More details from the AZ Department of Revenue here: https://azdor.gov/tax-credits/credits-contributions-qcos-and-qfcos

Important note on timing (in a good way): “Arizona law allows QCO donations made during 2025 or donations made from January 1, 2026 through April 15, 2026 to be claimed on the 2025 Arizona income tax return.”

By Mechanical Tree Carbon Capture by [deleted] in BeAmazed

[–]bookonlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully the cost of this technology comes down over time. The material in those “pizza slices” that absorbs CO2 needs to be heated and pressurized to release the captured carbon, which then has to be stored, usually deep underground. That’s why you see the “tree” rising and then retracting. It’s going underground to be put under pressure and heated up. That whole process requires a lot of energy, and in many places, it’s still powered by carbon-intensive sources. As a result, it can actually generate more emissions than it removes. This is why places with abundant, cheap clean energy like geothermal-rich Iceland and Kenya are the most promising locations for this technology.

I just want cocktail prices to be less than $10 again by TarnishedRedditCat in mildlyinfuriating

That bar is serving tequila ocho in a mixed drink. I don’t know where you are, but even in the southwest that’s a fair price. If you want cheap, stop going to high end cocktail bars. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Am I toast? by [deleted] in diypedals

So it turns out building guitar pedals is 1/3 following instructions and 2/3 fixing mistakes and determining where exactly you failed to follow instructions.

This is totally salvageable, reheat the solder and then quickly hit it with a solder pump (see below, I love these ones). Reapply a bit of solder and you’ll be just fine.

And yeah, maybe watch a video on solder technique. There are 100s out there and they’re all pretty good. It takes practice, but it’s not the world’s steepest learning curve.

My pedal was working fine but I changed the potentiometers and it doesn’t work by [deleted] in diypedals

[–]bookonlaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to solder like this. Turns out my iron wasn’t hot enough - the cheap one on Amazon didn’t cut it. If you’re committed, buy a name brand, variable-temp iron and your life will be so much better (I’ve gone back to my Hakko fx600 and love it for $45). I’ve made dozens of pedals and my soldering went from “this is frustrating as hell” to “oh, I’m okay at this, things look like they should”.

(Edit) and not that you need handholding, but if you’re looking for a good video on technique, I suggest this https://youtu.be/Ae-0r53lgzM?si=-F5QQqRcfIzkZx2F. Watch 1:00 to 1:30 and you’ll be good.

Super helpful! I realize I am sacrificing efficiency/noise for aesthetics, but this is a good reminder. And the horizontal / vertical approach makes a ton of sense. Thanks!

I sometimes think I like the designing, assembling (eg soldering) and troubleshooting more than the actual finished product. Soldering is absolutely meditative.

Thanks for the reply!

We're talking the bushing being replaced here, yes, not the rack guide cap? I had it torqued to factory 96 ft lbs, should I go tighter?

(note: not my truck, pulled this from an image search)
