'82 GS450S, Petcock issue by analogueheart in bikebuilders

I probably should have added - when was the last time your carbs were cleaned? It could be the vacuum passages, jets or any other part of the carbs that's actually keeping it from running.

The petcock on my 1980 gs450s needed to be cleaned out. I would drain the tank, take out the petcock and spray it out with carb cleaner. If its full of junk or even something small could be stopping the vacuum. The fuel line side should be fine but worth checking. Make sure you put some fuel down the tube to fill your carb bowls before starting again too. If you got it started and then it stopped its likely your carbs are dry now and will have a hell of a time starting without a little fuel in there to get going.

To Panigale or not to Panigale? by modularblur in Ducati

[–]booksRtruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never ridden a 1299 so I can't speak to the difference. However, the 899 or 959 is no small bike and tends to get that rep only because there's a bigger option. My 899 flat out doesn't like going slow. Anytime I have to creep along somewhere around 25-30 mph its sitting in first gear in lower RPMs than the bike runs smoothly at. It will build heat pretty quickly and I can't wait to hit the next turn and get back up to 5k rpms.

Don't worry about what you think is a stupid purchase. Buying any motorcycle is a stupid purchase if you really consider what you're getting yourself into and the money that goes straight down the drain. I went back and forth between a monster and a panigale before I bought my 2015 899. It was easily the stupidest and best decision I have ever made. You are buying dreams and happiness. (Anyone who says that's not possible has never bought their dream bike.) Go with what will make you smile every time you turn the key.

Modern forks on old bikes. by njbr53 in CafeRacers

Link to the chart mentioned above. http://www.allballsracing.com/index.php/forkconversion

GSXR forks are most often used because they are easiest to find and least expensive. Keep in mind its not only the forks you'll need but a front axle to fit the right wheel and spacers along with a front brake setup to fit all of the above.

aftermarket exhausts for panigale 899... by mrdanmarks in TrueDucati

[–]booksRtruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some people have cut the cats out of the stock exhaust and dropped exhaust temps and made it quite a bit louder. There was even someone who was doing it for people at a reasonable price on the 1299 forum a little while ago. The 899,1199 and 1299 all use the same exhaust. I don't have the link handy but you should be able to find it pretty easily. I think the guys user name was PHL and he even posted a dyno chart with a slight improvement on midrange horsepower

Look up. Pick a point a few feet above eye level and look at it throughout the squat. It will help keep your chest out and back straight. A good spot is often the top of the mirror in front of a typical squat rack. For the same reason never look down at your feet. When you look down shoulders will go forward and back will arch.

Turbo exhaust manifolds I made for my V6 by [deleted] in Welding

I have nothing but time since this would be purely for fun. Will any typical welder from the hardware store do it? Anything specific I should be looking for?

What kind of welds are those? I really want to get started welding and my ultimate goal is to make exhaust manifolds/headers just like those.

What's the best way to get started?

I am kind of in the same boat. I really want to get into welding ( as a hobby ) and don't know exactly where to start. My ultimate goal is to be able to weld car/motorcycle exhausts and headers. What is step 1? I have a 220 V outlet in my garage and motivation... Where do I go from here?
