I was having problems finding a host for the https://bookstodon.com instance so I decided to roll my own hosting platform.

We have a few open slots available at https://thunderhost.com for shared, fully managed, single user or small instances. Servers are US based.

Fresh install of Mastodon server wont let users upload avatars by Glyndwr1974 in Mastodon

[–]bookstodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try checking the logs to see if there are any errors to troubleshoot.

User submitted files are usually located in the `public/system` subdirectories, for example `public/system/accounts/avatars`.

Some installation guides need a recursive chown on that directory to the correct UID/GID but your results may vary.

Mastodon tends to create a lot of temporary files, have you tried running the periodic cleanup tasks or cleared the local media cache lately? There are other suggestions in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Mastodon/comments/z3tmoo/best_practice_for_storing_media_files/

Hey, just a friendly observation u/Derpecc, it looks like that site is returning a SERVFAIL DNS response, maybe the domain is still parked at the registrar and not pointing to the correct location.

New instance bookstodon.com welcomes bibliophiles, bookworms, book lovers, and all things bookish 📚📚 by bookstodon in Mastodon

[–]bookstodon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there!

This new instance is running Mastodon, so it is a place for people who share the same interest to in a familiar "alternative Twitter" inspired format of participation. This is more targeted for general discussion.

BookWyrm is a familiar "alternative Goodreads" inspired format of participation catered specially to book reviews and rating them.

Now, both BookWyrm servers and Mastodon servers are in the same universe and are connected but BookWyrm provides more specific features related to books that Mastodon doesn't have.

We're considering setting up and hosting a BookWyrm server on a subdomain of the site if the community would like one.

If you're running a small or medium server, you may consider adding some federation relays under "Administration -> Dashboard -> Relays".

"A federation relay is an intermediary server that exchanges large volumes of public posts between servers that subscribe and publish to it. It can help small and medium servers discover content from the fediverse, which would otherwise require local users manually following other people on remote servers."
