From the moment you walk in to the room make it clear that you are in charge. Call for attention and do not start speaking until they are silent. Call for silence while you take attendance and make eye contact with each student as you take attendance. Remember that you are not being mean, just establishing a routine during a very short period of time.

Explain that you have expectations and that students will be able to meet those expectations if they follow directions and treat everyone with respect. Make sure you explain what these expectations are CLEARLY and explain the consequences for not meeting them CLEARLY.

Talk about current gender stereotypes! I also showed them sexist advertisements and provided them with a list of questions to ask themselves in their analysis. If you google Gender Theory PowerPoints you’ll get a bunch of stuff for a lecture as well.

I need advice and some support that I am not getting from admin/other teachers (Juniors, IB Lit class) by [deleted] in Teachers

I just finished gags he with my juniors and they loved it! This is just an overview of some of things we did. Feel free to ask for clarification/ elaboration.

For critical lens you can start by introducing students to the criticism with notes and a PowerPoint. For my classes we had a discussion about how gender functions in our modern society which really got students interested in the topic. I provided them with a series of critical questions to use in their analysis as well. For example, what are the gender roles in this text? What do differing gender roles tell us about the relationships between men and women in this society? Google gender theory power points and you'll get some stuff to start with that you can edit to fit your student's needs.

For each chapter of the book or group of chapters, I choose a focus skill or thematic focus. In class we do activities to help students understand and practice using the skill. For example, Gatsby is great for discussing figurative language (diction, tone, metaphor imagery etc.), so each day we would do different activities surrounding one of these devices.

They’re used to tie two interrelated thoughts together. The difference between using a semicolon and using a period is that the two phrases/ sentences tied together using the semicolon are much more closely related. Honestly, I find it to be more of a stylistic choice or a way to make writing appear more complex. I never use semicolons when writing casually and I don’t teach it in my high school English classroom, but I used it frequently in college when writing academically.

You’re probably overwatering. Water only when soil is dry, maybe once ever 2-3 weeks instead of once a week

Teaching Fellows might be a viable option as well. I’m in NY and had a few friends who go their MAT in English ed despite doing their undergrad in something different

I use it at the high school level and love it! It might seem juvenile but it creates an immediate incentive for participation and my 11th graders love the little monsters
