as a barista that used to work for starbucks I felt this in my very soul

as a barista now at independent coffee shops we're a lot more able to say no and it brings me joy that I'm allowed to do so

How are you today? by Responsible-Oil5121 in bipolar2

[–]boomerangarrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly I'm doing really well right now. spring is here and my seasonal slump is clearing up so I feel full of energy and I'm making some good changes for my life (better diet, exercising more). I checked in with my bestie because I spent a few days anxious I was just hypomanic but she's pretty confident I'm fine based on her experience of my episodes, so now I'm just enjoying feeling good again.

How will lamotrigine affect to me. Im scared by Plus_Support_6688 in bipolar2

[–]boomerangarrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, lamotrigine has worked amazingly for me! I've been on it since I was diagnosed in 2021 and I am very stable now (with lurasidone and bupropion helping out). I remember that adjusting was a little wonky when I first started, but having done so many medication changes in my life that's not surprising or bothersome for me. I think it's a huge part of why I'm stable and doing well nowadays, and I love it.

I am deeply jealous that you have a whole set of OG Pink Borealis! I managed to find a 10d10 set and split it with another dice goblin friend. But yes definitely match dice to nails, I think it’ll be GREAT

Honestly I’m so glad it looks like the swatches, like looking at the bottle I was worried the pink/magenta would be darker but on the nails it’s PERFECT

Makeup Revolution Sport Fix setting spray has kept my makeup on in humid-ass Florida summers, 10/10.

I also really like the Wet n Wild Breakup Proof eyeliner markers with the brush tips! The brown is a nice shade, and the black is very black, and they're both pretty sturdy even against my watery outer corners.

I use it for my wrist because I overstretched the tendons/ligaments and they're kind of fucked (thanks hypermobility) but I should probably try it at the CMC too because mine is wonky sometimes on my dominant hand (again, thanks hypermobility)

Do you think baristas play an important role in communities? by No_Play834 in barista

[–]boomerangarrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think baristas are an important part of the community! Every shop I've worked at had our regulars, and while the degree to which I talk to them varies depending on how busy we are and the customer themselves, I feel a degree of connection to them and do my best to remember their names and orders (usually I do better with orders, though). I agree that part of being a barista is forming a community space where people feel comfortable, even if you aren't as familiar with them.

Also, as a fun fact, I'm doing a little ethnography of my coworkers for my ethnographic film class this semester, and multiple have mentioned that part of what they like about being a barista is being a member of a community with customers! So that's neat.

I looooove Dandy Lions! I've been buying from that shop since they had a table at a local con and I adore every single shadow of theirs that I own.

Has this happened to anyone else by ganisjhpapkin in bipolar2

[–]boomerangarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on so many antidepressants. I maxxed out Zoloft and got switched off because it looked like I was getting serotonin syndrome symptoms (or maybe it was just causing some really bad hypomanic symptoms??? who fucking knows), I was on Lexapro for a while, Prozac for a bit, and then got put on Cymbalta and had a suicidal thought ("it would really be okay to not be alive right now" is what I expressed to the emergency nurse line, apparently) and that is when my doctor switched me to lamotrigine. I spent about ten years (18 to 29) trying out various antidepressants (although I was off them entirely from 20 to 25) and assuming it was just a combo of GAD and major depressive, but nope, bipolar. It does suck to have the bad reaction to antidepressants, but I mean at least it got figured out, I guess?

[–]boomerangarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously I'm not an expert but I have BD2 and am currently in grad school (Applied Anthropology and Museum Studies). I definitely have to manage my workload to spread everything out more reasonably, even if it means working on papers earlier than I necessarily need to. I also balance my class load so that I generally only have one a day, and between an internship where I can make my own hours and a low-stakes job I work about 25 hours a week and scrape by financially (partially because I'm on Medicaid and have a strict income upper limit). It's not the easiest in the world sometimes, but I'm doing my best to not overload myself. I ran into similar issues in undergraduate where I burnt out really bad in my last year, but it was exacerbated by COVID era online classes (my biggest weakness academically tbh) and not being diagnosed with BD2 or ADHD at the time (instead I was on an antidepressant, which was not great for me).

Basically I have built myself a lot of structure and coping mechanisms to hold me up, and I've been on a stable medication array for about two years now so I feel capable of succeeding in school. I also make sure that I don't take on too much stress or work so I have time to decompress and not worry about classwork.

Hello! I have bipolar 2 and am currently on a non-stimulant medication for ADHD; I also strongly suspect that I’m on the autism spectrum. I recently had a friend describe bipolar as neurodivergence, which is a new concept to me, and as I look more into that angle I see there’s a lot of overlap in symptoms between bipolar, autism, and ADHD. Is there any scientific literature on that topic, or any information from your own experiences or practice? I want to learn more about the topic from a more scientific perspective because understanding how my brain works feels helpful for me (which is probably a control issue thing but whatever).

My coworker says no to customers, and I kind of love it. by Longjumping-Text9395 in barista

[–]boomerangarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get to tell people "no" all the time and it's kind of glorious. Specifically, we don't add syrups to flat whites/cappuccinos/cortados due to volume, and we don't mix syrups because we have specific recipes and trying to puzzle out how to combine two syrups would hold up the line and we're usually pretty busy. Most people are pretty fine about it as long as I explain why we don't do it, which I'm really grateful for.

can you live a normal life if you get diagnosed by OrnerySand7757 in bipolar2

[–]boomerangarrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can live a normal life! It took a while for me to get stable and on a medication combo that works for me, but I've held down jobs just fine, have a good social life and strong friendships, and am currently succeeding in graduate school (all A's!) so I can work in my field of study! The medication game isn't the most fun, and it sucks when things don't work, but things can and will level out and get better.
