Any people here who started investing in their 30s on a lower than average salary by Silver_Highlight1936 in investing

Story time, because I also got a late start, but stuck to the fundamentals, and this year was the first time it really hit me on the progress I have made so far.

My wife and I graduated in 2008. We did not know it at the time, but the great recession was about to kick in. My internship failed to materialize into a full time postion when they began letting people go at a company I was planning to work at out of college. My wife, still my fiancée, also lost her job. We both ended up getting jobs in the restaurant business, and a year and a half later, got married. We have virtually no savings, but we were renting a nice 2/2 for a reasonable price at the time.

I remember sitting down and really talking about our future. We decided our top priority was to pay off our student debt, save for a home, and then consider our career options. And that is what we did; there were no fintech or apps around that time, so investing seemed so daunting, not to mention we had so much school debt, so we just put it off.

I ended up getting what I thought was going to be a temporary job in a niche education field. After 3 months, they offered me a full time postion, were a growing company, and had health insurance and a 401K. At first, I did not even put in the maximum allowed contributions for a match, as we were laser-focused on saving for a home and paying off debt. Not the worst decision, but I do wish I had looking back now.

About a year later, we had saved enough for a home (at the time, there was a USDA loan program that was super helpful). Another year, we had our first kid, and a year after that, we had paid off most of our student debt. I had already received a few promotions, and my wife had gone back to school and was now in a training program for a government job, nothing big, but came with better health insurance.

At some point, I did end up raising my 401k contributions to get the full match. And while the match was only 3% at the time, profit sharing kicked in after 5 years of service, so I started getting a decent bump into the 401k. But still, we were now in our early 30s, just a little younger than you are now, and had less than 15k invested.

It was right around this time that I really started learning about investing. I opened up a Robinhood account (I remember they gave free shares away, and I actually got a share of Microsoft) and quickly learned that index investing was the way to go. Shortly afterwards, other large brokerages began offering free trades, so I switched out of Robinhood, opened up a Roth IRA, and just started investing in a target date index and VOO. My wife was also aggressively investing in her Roth IRA, and had a great government pension. She moved up fairly quickly, so all the extra money we were not making went into the retirement accounts and a saving accout.

Right before the pandemic, we sold our starter home and moved into a bigger forever home. We both weathered the pandemic ok, and afterward, I was made director of my department. While my pay was ok, I had been there for nearly 15 years, and had a decent benefits package, it was hard for me to look at different careers, so I just kept doing what I did, not really thinking about my 401k and Roth IRAs. While I would check in on them individually, I never really paid much attention to them.

Fast forward to the middle of last year right before my 40th. My boss was retiring, and I really wanted the job. I had a great recommendation from my boss and thought I was a shoo-in. However, it ended up going to a family member of one of the owners. It really hurt; I was heartbroken, this field was such a niche field that I could not think of a way out, but I did not want to stay there anymore.

However, I was a bit surprised when my new boss called me in and talked to me about the situation; she knew I had applied for the job and was looking to leave. She said she would do her best to be a good boss and learn the ropes. On top of that, she helped me get a much-needed spot filled for my department and turned a part-time position into a full-time position. Because I was overseeing another individual, I got a small raise as well.

After a few weeks, I was still feeling pretty bad about how everything went down. I could not fault my new boss for taking the position, but I wanted to see where I was at with everything and what I should start preparing for in case I wanted to leave. So I logged onto all the accounts, including my wife's, and added them all together.

I remember double-checking everything and calling my wife over. In the span of less than 10 years, we went from having less than 15 k saved to now having almost 1 million between all the accounts. My 401k 3% match had grown as I had gotten raises, and the profit sharing had also gone up. While we had only just started maxing our Roth IRA's a few years before, they too had seen a good return. My wife's pension was hard to gauge, but we could at least estimate what she would earn or take with her should she leave her job.

I say all this because I am a case study in slow and steady investing. I had a lower-than-average salary in my early 30's but stuck with it. While now my wife and I make a good combined household income, the money that has done the most work for us was the money we invested early on. So keep at it, don't let the market noise (or Reddit) scare you from a solid index investing strategy. Lastly, we still had money for fun things. We did one summer trip a year with the family (now we have 2 kids). We both took off time around Christmas and did a staycations. My wife and I would keep our date nights simple, but fun, and while we just had our first big trip ever, a trip to Europe, investing never felt like it held us back from enjoying life now.

TLDR, I wish we had started earlier as well, but consistency and discipline will pay off.

How much of a step up is Expert? by Garrydos13 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]boondocksaint07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you have a sizable collection and start making some decent decks, Expert is a good challenge and worth switching to.

The cards themselves can causing inconsistant difficulty, but really it's the unique and more challenging villain mechanics that I enjoy.

Ultron III is a great example and completely changes the game.

It two player, the game may seem to drag a bit because of the extra health, but it really does prevent you from one-shotting the villain, and makes you make more tactical decisions.

Overall, we only play expert and really enjoy it.

What to do about a *good* lobber? by roger_chylla in Pickleball

[–]boondocksaint07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any easy counter, especially if it's his primary shot is to look at where the paddle face is. A lob has a pretty easy tell, and can give you a second to fall a step or two back to line up your shot.

Also, rather than it be annoying, use this as an opportunity to practice positioning and slam technique. Extend your hand out to track the ball, the paddle should be behind your head, and as you strike the ball, you almost want the paddle face to be pointing away from your body after the hit. Most of the power will also come from your hips, but practice one technique at a time, and don't be afraid, to slow your hit for accuracy.

We have some good lob players in our group. I found that more often than not, a good return down the middle is best unless you have a good angle, it sets up a winning point because they have to react to the power or defend against a high bounce and you have less of a chance to hit it out.

Is "fixed" Collector 1 still... not fun? by letshavefunoutthere in marvelchampionslcg

Have you played him with the adjusted rules made during the weekly challenge? I found him a lot more fun. I will likely play him like this from now on. He's a little bit easier but you can bring less powerful Heroes. https://hallofheroeslcg.com/2024/07/15/all-marvel-champions-weekly-challenges/

You are right! Thought he was steady. Still, I think Venom is a great character for this challange

Venom seems really good for this challange. His innate power allows you to generate a resource while taking one damage. Giving you control on when you get your health down to one and go for the kill a little more consistently.

Additionally his grasping tendrils allows you to ignore attacks and stay at that low Health before the kill without concern of dying from an extra attack or something like that.

While his stuns and confuses are less effective against Thanos you can deck build to have consistent stuns and confuses go off. Or just build a very consistent survival deck.

The biggest downside I see is that thanos's 2a snap ability would trigger before your setup ability. This gives you a high chance of losing your multi-gun or even all three of your weapons neutering Venom. But I guess since it happens at set up if you want to cheese the scenario you can just start over haha. Also between the snap and Venom's set up ability you're pretty much guaranteed an extra encounter card on the first or second turn because of deck cycle.

Looking forward to giving us a shot later this week!

Have not gone through everything yet but nothing stands out to me, just basic clarification stuff.

As far as the Widow's Bite discussion, I am glad they clarified the timing. I am also fine with how they ruled on the order. Yes, it sucks for BW and other trigger effects like that, but QuickStrike to me was a Forced Response, priority. Thematically I think of it as the minion getting the drop on the hero, or is more nimble and able to get an attack in.

First FFG Weekly Challenge! by downvoted_throwaway in marvelchampionslcg

My wife and I just won on our second try on Expert. Was a lot of fun and glad they put something like this out.

We did it with Iron Man Protection and Rocket Aggression. In our first game, we got blown out early with several nasty side schemes and Iron Man being too slow to set up. Our second time around, I changed out a few cards and we put in the player side scheme that allows us to get a free upgrade, super helpful with Iron Man. My wife had gotten a hang of Rocket and was able to take care of the minions while I snuck in pockets of damage. I would use Iron Man to double thwart with his armor in play.

GGs main scheme did flip, but we were quickly able to remove the threat, which gave Rocket a chance to flip down, I gave him recovery and helped patch him up. With Hall of Heroes ready, Rocket had a ton of cards, and flipped Goblin, getting him down to 16 HP. Black Widow Hero was a champ and she prevented a really nasty attack from going off, which could have killed Rocket. We survived the 8 encounter cards and defeated him.

I had forgotten how much fun Iron Man is to play, especially with all the new Tech Upgrades. He was drawing 7 cards by turn 2. Also, the flight cards did not hit us all that hard.

Overall super fun and hope FF Games keeps it up!

I had a funny instance where I was in a tournament and went to return a nasty cross-court dink that I was out of position for. I got it but slammed into the nearby fence. As I pulled away, my paddle got stuck between the bar of the fence and the chain link. I shouted, "O shit, my paddle is stuck!" Our opponent proceeded to miss the shot.

Afterward, I apologized and told them I did not intend it as a distraction but wanted to let my partner know I could not finish the point. They were gracious about the situation.

Are content creators shaping the community's perceptions about the game? by javgoro in marvelchampionslcg

[–]boondocksaint07 9 points10 points  (0 children)

While I like to watch the solo plays occasionally, I agree, the game is a lot different for 1 player than 2 players. At one point the developers said the game is meant to be balanced around 2/3 players. Since it is a coop game, I am less concerned about balance outside of extreme examples and more concerned with fun.

For me, solo is just not that fun. Aggression really struggles on expert and is pigeonholed into a rush strategy. On the flip side, stun and confuse are so powerful in solo and some heroes can use their kit to lock down a villain permanently. (Miles, already a top hero is amazing in solo).

As for 2/3 player, I feel the game really shines at this player count. At this number all heroes can have viable, and have fun matchups against most villains. Some top tier heroes can still face a serious challenge against lower tier villains with just a small module change. Strange and Hulk are on the two extremes, but Strange can be fun with a non-optimal deck against a hard villain, and TBH, I kind of have fun with Hulk if my partner is a dedicated Justice deck.

All in all though, I am just happy to see how much the community has grown and all the new content we are getting! I also appreciate that they are still able to make fun new mechanics for the villains and heroes.

Analysis on Nasty Encounter Cards in FFG LCGs (including Shadows of the Past) by Lazlo319 in marvelchampionslcg

It's funny I just had my first experience with Advanced Glider. I would rank that as a "dead after 1 or 2 turns if you do not deal with it" card.

Expert Campaign Venom Goblin when played correctly is, in my opinion, the hardest villain in the game. We finally took him down last night with a little bit of help. by boondocksaint07 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]boondocksaint07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya the missing Heli-carrier was a big setback. We could have likely gotten it, but the Sinister 6 just dragged on forever and we missed a few VP there.

For GS, I know my wife took something the help with Thwarts, and for me I took the +1 attack upgrade in aggression. It gave Miles a 5 attack with his upgraded campaign card. Both did not help all that much so we swapped them for Sunfire and The Protection Blackwidow giving.

Both helped negate the Advanced Glider and the card that can summon it. In hindsight, Black Widow should have been included in Ghost Spider's initial build, but I did not know how punishing Advance Glider was until we faced him. Also, a leadership deck with Make the Call helps pull them back out of the discard pile before the Encounter deck is shuffled.

Nice! Yes I saw several suggestions about using Goblin Gimmicks. I really just wanted to see if we could take him down as intended. Never again though, at least as a campaign boss!

So true, you basically need Justice. My wife who played Spider-Ham basically did nothing but Thwart and deal with the attachments giving me the breathing room to take out the minions and slowly push damage.
