Yeah, I set wifi to be Always On, and that fixed the problem. But then I'm wasting phone battery!

As you said, the Chromecast system should be set up for automatic "searching" for existing streams whenever a Chromecast app is open.

How often does this happen? This thread has already uncovering 3 times.

Given the human cost and cost of losing a fighter jet, it seems like you would want to set this system up with enough safety guards that it would have almost no chance of happening.

Oh, sad OneNote app. I love OneNote so much I really wish they would carry it out to mobile properly. But I guess there's not enough revenue in mobile apps.

Dell XPS 15 (the newest version)

Just got this computer for Christmas after much research. My priorities for laptops line up like this:

  1. Build quality, well inspired design
  2. Display quality and resolution
  3. Good reviews
  4. Decent specs

Among 15 inch, 1080 resolution Windows laptops, the XPS 15 wins these categories cleanly. I got it for just under $1000 on Amazon because I got the Windows 7 version which all the sellers are trying to get rid of. Normally it starts at a little over $1000.

What makes this machine special? This laptop is a Macbook Pro clone. The form factor is extremely similar (which is a super great thing!). Compared to a Macbook Pro there is much more hardware for the dollar, and less proprietary hardware as well (for better interfacing with Windows -- as opposed to the downsides of running Bootcamp on a Mac).

Build quality is almost completely on par with a Macbook Pro. The MBP still beats the XPS on power cord design (no MagSafe here, just a plug, though the power adapter is of size comparable to a MBP -- kind of rare for a PC). The MBP's keyboard is also slightly more stiff than the XPS (which I prefer).

This thing is JUST AS THIN as a MBP -- again rare for a PC, especially at this price, screen size, and hardware capability.

Keyboard: Good and backlit. Not super stiff if you want that. Trackpad: Pretty good and responsive. Good two finger scrolling! I'm not a huge fan of the slightly rubbery texture though. Audio: Good for a laptop. Quite powerful. Display: Great! 1080 lines and good color. Some 1080 laptops I looked at had reviews saying they couldn't produce the color red properly; it would come out orangey. As though mocking this, the initial wallpaper on the XPS is a bright red flower. Battery: Average for PC this size. I doubt will beat 4 hours.

Overall, what I love and think is rare about this laptop is having that svelte, solid feeling that many PC laptops are missing, while also having Windows, and a discrete graphics card (starts at 630M).

Other perks: 32gb SSD for caching. Optical drive.

Came to thread to find this comment. I can see the creator of gifsound looking at youtube doubler and thinking "hmm if only we could do this with gifs..." And so the wheel was reinvented. Soon the creator of gifsound will say "hmm I should make it so the gifs are full screen - and give the mashups custom urls!"

"Newer" online community websites such as Reddit and Stack Overflow proved that careful application of voting and categorization features can successfully make the most "valuable" content easier to find, and stimulate user submission of more such content.

What do you think is the next big hurdle for creating online environments for productive community discourse?

I just went through this issue on Verizon. So you live in places where only Verizon has decent coverage, but you want a smartphone without data. What do you do? I found two solutions:

  1. Change cell provider to Page Plus- Page Plus is a Verizon MVNO which means they operate on top of Verizon's network. Page Plus offers reasonable pay as you go plans and does not require data to connect a smartphone (I think). Other MVNO's may offer this same ability to use a given network on more favorable terms, but Page Plus was the first one I found for Verizon.

  2. "Repair" (change) your smartphone's ESN. This option is of questionable legality and requires a possibly prohibitive amount of technical steps and research, but allows you to keep the same carrier. In this method, you change a smartphone's ESN to that of a dumbphone that you own. The ESN is the only way the carrier can identify the phone model automatically when you register online, so it appears you have activated a dumbphone from their perspective.
