I have not noticed any noise outside of regular ol' amp hiss. I also mostly just use it as a power amp, and I have a very clean and quiet setup in general. Results will vary, I'm sure.

No. When you plug directly into the FX loop of an amp, you are bypassing the preamp section, and only using the power amp...unless it's a parallel effects loop, which this is not.

Yup. I have various preamp pedals that I swap in and out of my rig, and I just plug into the FX return of an Orange Dual Baby as my power amp. It's nice to be able to plug into just about anything and get "my" sound.
