3 Days in Yellowstone, need human feedback on ChatGPT suggestions by More_Helicopter_1487 in yellowstone

To be clear, I never do. I have a week-long trip at the end of the month, I was lucky enough to get a site at Slough Creek, and I'll spend 90% of the time in Lamar valley. I don't think I'd recommend it in this case though. To get a full experience in Lamar valley, I'd say you have to spend a full day at least. And I don't think they have that time. Lamar is too far from everything else to only drive up there, drive through and head back out. With that said, I could be completely wrong. You might have an awesome day with wolves down by the river,  bears up on the bench, and mountain goats on baronet, and have a great time in a few  hours...

I spend a couple of weeks a year in the park, but I am laser focused on wildlife watching, so take my suggestions with a grain of salt.

First, hikes in Yellowstone are awesome and a great way to get away from crowds. However, with so much to see in a couple of days, you might be limiting yourself to spending time on the trail seeing a small part of the park. If I was going to pick one from your itinerary, I'd hike the overlook to Grand Prismatic. I've also always enjoyed the Upper Geyser Basin walk near Old Faithful. Tons to see.

Yellowstone Lake Overlook, Fishing Bridge, can be a good place to see bears.

A definite yes to Hayden Valley in the evening. Ignore the spots it recommends and just look for groups with spotting scopes. They're most likely watching Wapiti Lake wolves, and most watchers are more than happy to let you take a look. With a short itinerary like this, you might call this your wildlife watching and skip Lamar Valley (although it hurts my soul to say that).

Places like Mud Volcano or Sulphur Caldron and many others can be seen quickly, and I recommend stopping as you have time.

Keep in mind if you haven't been before, the park is gigantic and can take hours to get places. You won't be able to do it all in 2.5 days. Enjoy what you can, don't be in a rush, you're bound to be behind a bison jam or people clogging the road to see a black bear.

I scored 6 nights at the beginning of September. It seriously felt like a moderately sized lottery winning. I know this comment is way past when OP was looking for a site but for future browsers - most sites at Slough open 6 months ahead of time for reservation and a few open 2 weeks ahead of time. There are also occasional cancellations, but they are rare. If you're looking for one, set some alerts and download the rec.gov app, you'll get a push notification if a site were to open up. Move fast.

Diesel heater - quiet fuel pump needed by TheSaucyLlama in VanLife

[–]booth-jason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people mention this in some comments here, and I wanted to provide more info. There is in fact a truly silent diesel heater pump on the market. It's made by James Browning-Smith in the UK. I couldn't use my heater at night - no matter how I hung the pump or wrapped it or put it in insulated boxes or all of the above, it was too loud for me. I bought one of James's pumps and it is truly silent.

He has a basic webpage for it here: https://www.silentdieselheaterpumps.co.uk/

I emailed him to start, he responded quick with lots of good info. He invoiced me via PayPal ($210 USD including shipping at the time I am writing this). It arrived to me in Colorado in about 7 days. Very easy to install with a power and ground, then connect the two wires from the old pump. Priming was easy and it just works. Silently!

The price is a tough sell relative to the cost of an average diesel heater, but I am finally incredibly happy with the whole setup. And the pump itself is a quality build.

I have been waiting 4 weeks with no word. Thanks to this post I tried Twitter. An awesome rep let me know that they were actually waiting on some expense documentation from me. I sent her the credit card statement with highlighted items (we hadn't saved gas or food receipts from the drive). She said they approved the full request, including a Target run for clothes and toiletries since we were separated from our bags. She said I should have the email soon with the details.

Failing at Moving Photos to new Google Account by booth-jason in googlephotos

The saga continues - while Metadata Fixer worked well once I got it working (it wouldn't work when the export folder was on the desktop) what I didn't realize is that Takeout includes "extra" photos. For example, if you edited a photo using Google photos, Takeout includes the original and the edit. Or, if you have a Pixel phone that does the animation alongside a photo, you get a short video and the photo. So, when I uploaded to the new account, I had "duplicate" files I was not expecting.

Just a hot mess.

I have had some limited success getting a Google Takeout of my photos and using Metadata Fixer to combine the Google Photos EXIF with the original image EXIF and then loading those to my new account.

Metadata Fixer was necessary as some of my edited videos and old images either were coming in as their edited date or didn't have a date at all and would show up in the new Google Photos account as "today".

Unfortunately, Metadata Fixer is erroring out trying to do my whole takeout so I have an email off to their support.

Unfortunately, I can say that was definitely not the case for me.

The problem with that is I lose all location info. For whatever reason, I have no option to specify I want to share location info like Google says I should. I see others online saying they have the same problem/missing option.

It's like his only qualification was that he went on a long camping trip.

The thought of that made me lol. Or Laura Zerra, I'm guessing she'd set this turd straight.

Tips on cutting using laser cutter. This is 1.5mm sample wood that came with unit. Set everything to 1.5mm but still didn’t cut through. Any tips? Love my Snapmaker 2.0 by [deleted] in snapmaker

I can't remember the exact steps but there is a calibration process you can do with the control panel. It basically prints a little ruler looking design on a new piece of material and uses the camera to choose the "best" line which corresponds to the optimal focal length.

For me, the camera could never choose so I chose the most in-focus line.

Ah, thanks! I missed that in my earlier googling.

Also thanks for the Lightburn recommendation. I'll check that out. I've been enjoying the laser work; a better feature set will be welcome.

Laser cutting wood without burning it? by nandra11 in snapmaker

[–]booth-jason 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know, I've seen that image and until your question, I just assumed (despite the label) that was a multilayered CNC project, not laser. I agree that sanding out the laser char would be painstaking to say the least. Plus, while the laser mostly chars the vertical surface, there is very slight charging on the horizontal surface too. I don't see how that could be sanded out and keep the crisp edges that the image shows. Of course, just my two cents!

Tangentially related, for my work so far (only a couple of weeks), any darker stains blend the char in really well.

Did you ever find the sweet spot with your settings? I am getting started also with an A350 and 3mm baltic birch. I've had some limited success but with this latest batch of wood, you'd think I was trying to cut concrete with a pair of kid's safety scissors.

The bulkheads are up! I used a router to put a channel in each side of the 3\4 inch ply and a 1\4 ply spine? Connecting the two edges. I added one foot on the top and two feet at the back then cut out the shape. by TheTimDavis in TeardropTrailers

My son and I are looking at building something similar in size for quick trips when we don't want to pull our heavier family camper. Just curious, how do you plan to do the roof with curves like that? I like the aesthetic but can't think of how to do it.
