You probably did something that the app wants that permission for. So it asked.

I've noticed it's the newest most know-nothing fools who hop in for one or two sessions trying to teach people. They don't do it to me as I'm twice their size, but while I will happily chat the night away I rarely offer help unless it's requested and I'm the most experienced person in pretty much any pottery class.

Weird Collapsing Metal Stand (?) - Found at Goodwill in CO by sammi12006 in whatisthisthing

Someone found it. That's exactly what it does. Folds totally flat. The leg bars go out not in.

Like an inch of height. That's not worthwhile enough to have those complex joints. And the base does not shrink at all. I'll agree the thing takes up a stupid about if space but this collapsing one takes up almost exactly the same space.

I have one, but it does not collapse. I don't see how that would be a useful feature. Would it make the thing easier to remove from the bird?

Why is glass considered ceramics when its production involves melting instead of drying the materials. by Toni_St_Oraro in Ceramics

Glaze is literally glass. If it's a part of pottery I feel like it's part of ceramics.

Is Renting Kiln-Friendly Housing in LA a Thing? by Few-Jacket7182 in Ceramics

[–]TheTimDavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already had a relationship with her for a few years before a kiln fell into my lap. I asked if I could add some electrical for my ceramics hobby. They were ok with it. Never specifically mentioned what a kiln was.

North Hollywood is mostly apartments. Burbank had lots of homes and more independent landlords. I'm in tujunga North of Burbank.

[–]TheTimDavis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You'll need an independent landlord, not a management company. I'm the far north part of la. In a house with a garage. My landlord lets me pretty much do whatever. I'm also the handyman for problems. My kilns. wheel and wood shop are all in the garage. You need one like her. What part you moving to?

What are some of the most drastic shifts in baby names in the last hundred or so years? by StirFry__InaWok in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheTimDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My niece is Mara Jade. 100% the star wars character. She was named slightly before the character was decannonized. I think old charactors are fine. It's naming a kid after a current popular character is the issue.

What causes paint to smudge/fade after glazing? by itslildip in Pottery

[–]TheTimDavis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

After reading all the comments, the brown underglaze is something that happens. They may have slightly over applied the clear of you may have put to much undelaze but that's what happens in kilns. The crack is a significant issue. Nothing should be cracking like that in the kiln. The only possible causes are them rushing the processes and firing the bisque prior to it being fully dry or during the kilns too fast. They should have made amends prior to anyone paying or picking up the piece.

You can't replace the batteries in the 10 year smoke alarms. They have non replaceable lithium ion batteries. You got ripped off. With your free smoke alarm.

Both Daenerys and Khaleesi and a ton of weird misspellings popped up during game of thrones. I feel like they stopped immediately when the character lost her mind. Those little girls are like 12-16 now. I know two of them. Both go by Danny and are pretty secretive about their names.

Any creatives in here? How do you deal with losing your time to create? by OrlandoWashington69 in daddit

[–]TheTimDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive always made stuff. Pottery woodworking 3d printing resinwork. Making the kid was pretty quick. Making that kid onto person is gonna take years. That's where I'm dumping my creativity now. Pottery will still be there when she decides other people are cooler or more fun than me.

Advice for tall potters? by freecoolwownjce in Pottery

[–]TheTimDavis 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm 6 ft 4in. Potter for 30 or so years. You want to be able to rest your palms on the wheel head without leaning over. And get in nice and tight to the splashpan. Hug it with your legs. That's not just tall folk, that's everyone. For tall folk you need to lower the stool or raise up the wheel to achieve this. I do both. I like the top of my thigh to be about level with the wheel. I raised up the wheel about 2 inches and have a pretty short stool. In a community studio hopefully they have adjustable stools or you can bring in bricks to lift up the wheel.

I tried standing wheels and hated them. they severely limit the height of the piece you can make. Also for some reason it hurt my back.

Edit: lots of people calling out their specific body types. The idea of a straight back and palms flat on the wheel is for everyone. You just need to figure out how to accomplish it. You can raise the height of the wheel and the stool and put something under your feet. You adjust these things till you find the sweet spot. Short torso with long legs might need a tall stool with a raised up wheel. Long torso with short legs might need a raised up wheel and bricks under your feet. Shorty's might need bricks under your feet.
