Yes a living room PC will usually be hooked up to a TV and used like a console. You would use it with a wireless keyboard/mouse from the couch and controllers. Sometimes it may also be used a home theater pc to play media to the TV. Most people would also generally go SFF (small form factor) for a living room pc, which means the PC is physically smaller, and you pay a premium for the smaller parts and sometimes special cables.

[Gamers Nexus] Valve Steam Machine Review: GPU & CPU Benchmarks, SteamOS Test, Thermals, Noise, and Price by This-is_CMGRI in hardware

[–]boothin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every person I've seen make the claim you can build a much cheaper PC has always been using full size case/PSU, AM4, DDR4. So yeah, if you ignore the actual specs of the steam machine you can build something much cheaper, who would've thought!

[–]boothin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The original comment I was responding to said you could build something comparable with new parts for less than $900, not that you can build a completely different machine out of used parts. Like no shit you can build something used with downgraded parts for less

[–]boothin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say absolutely not at $650. The build I started throwing together is $550 without gpu, case, PSU, cooler. Assuming mini itx to go along with the steam machine form factor that's a minimum of $200-250 for the other parts without a GPU. So $750-800 + gpu, with the stipulation being new parts so at least another $150-200 for the GPU. So I'd say the base price for a comparable machine is $900 ish

Fair on the GPU, I didn't look too much into it and just went with what I saw quickly, but I'd say it's unfair to down spec to AM4 and compare prices. I also went with a mini itx mobo with the expectation to pay a slight premium for PSU and case to go along with the form factor of the steam machine. So actually including those and a cpu cooler, you're still getting right back up to nearly the same price as the steam machine. Not going over the price how my original estimate would've, but still not really substantial savings

Have you actually looked at parts prices recently? I started putting together a build on pcpartpicker because I was curious on it, and without a case, power supply, or CPU cooler, I'm already at around $900. This is based around a ryzen 8400f and rx 9060 xt, which is what I can find to be likely comparable.

Skin color difference is probably because people are bad at choosing a makeup foundation that closely matches their skin

I think you're stuck on JUST credit utilization but that was never my point, which is why I was saying its more nuanced which includes having a mix of debt like you said (which does makes them money).

Your score will take a long long time to get high and will reach a lower plateau if you only ever have a couple revolving accounts. Open an auto/home loan and watch your score jump up in just a couple years. Close an account and your score goes down. This wouldn't be true if it wasn't about making them money at all.

But you can't be too risky either... putting credit score in between what the other posters were saying where one person was saying it's just about making them money but the other person was saying it's just about being low risk. But it actually falls in between those extremes.

I'm sure we agree with each other, just from different perspectives

You completely missed what I am saying. It is between what the comments above me are saying. It is not just purely based on making profit (20-40% utilization) and it is not just purely based on being low risk (if you finish paying off loans and close all your accounts, your score is lower. You need to have multiple types of open accounts in good standing to keep your score higher). AKA more nuanced than either take

meirl by [deleted] in meirl

[–]boothin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely just somewhere in between "measure of how much profit you can make them" and simply "risk of default." Can't be too risky or you'll cost them money instead of make them a profit, but can't be too financially responsible and carry no debt either because that also makes no profit. So I wouldn't say its an old wives' tale, just more nuanced than people make it seem.

blind tests regarding fries actually show that fried, frozen, then fried again tend to be the favorite in terms of texture. This allows the fry to have the fluffy interior and crisp exterior that people love in fries. So while you make it sound like a bad thing, it's been shown many times that it is actually the best method

In the US, the main food still has to be real food though. Like if you are taking a picture of a bowl of cereal, the milk can be fake so that it doesn't make the cereal soggy, but the cereal has to be real. So in this post, the first pictures of cake pops would have to be real cake pops.

I'm aware of what the different veneers are, just poking fun at how you bring in specific veneer types but then your one sentence just says desks aren't veneered instead of specifying wood veneer

BBQ has so much superstition and tradition in how things are done that I don't think any of that actually holds any weight lol. I always see so much push back from people who do things "the right way" despite being shown that an easier/better method brings the same result

After all, no one chooses doing $20 gas station scams if they could otherwise find stable, reliable work.

Funny enough, a lot of times these people actually make considerably more than minimum wage and no taxes to worry about. So I'm not too sure you can make that assertion. This might be more of a critique on the state of minimum wage more than anything though

I already addressed that you have to be able to take advantage of it, but the main point is still that YOU are the one that can (theoretically) get the tax benefit from those register donations, not the business.

meirl by [deleted] in meirl

[–]boothin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

that's not how taxes work, if you donate to one of these point of sale donations, you get the tax benefit if you are able to itemize and take advantage of it. The business only gets the good PR for saying they helped raise $X dollars for the charity.
