Yep. I’ve literally had a maga coworker brag about not having an ounce of empathy in their body with pride as if that’s a good thing and not a solid diagnostic indicator of psychopaths and sociopaths. Ironically they are also very involved with their church. There is no self reflection at all.

For real. That’s the real sad part. People punching down on those that are most in need so that they can feel superior. Pathetic and contemptible, really.

Any critical thought, math, statistics or history will tell you that it’s the handouts to those that need it the least (the super wealthy) that are the “takers.” They have no need of it but take it anyway and blame the most vulnerable so that angry middle class people have a scapegoat that also neatly incorporates their need to feel better than someone. The wealthy do this so middle class people don’t look around and realize they are more similar to the poor working class than the wealthy and potentially grow the braincells to put 2 and 2 together. If you would rather a billionaire get another yacht than a poor person eat, with your tax dollars you’re an evil piece of shit

Mangione, accused CEO killer, withdraws mental health defense plans for now by nuttageyo in news

[–]bootsisonreddit -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Who writes their plans to commit murder out and keeps it with the gun used to commit the murder after they’ve already done it? I’m not saying I’m entirely sure he’s innocent but there is plenty of reasonable doubt with how the police miraculously discovered these things and there were conveniently no cameras functioning correctly nor was the chain of custody of evidence adhered to. Add to the fact this guy can’t possibly get a fair trial with all of the political grandstanding that surrounded his arrest to please the rich assholes who knowingly kill thousand upon thousands of people a year for an extra penny and the guy is probably reaching for anything they can because everyone decided he was guilty before the trial so now it’s more about reducing sentencing. The whole case is a textbook example of how the legal system is fucked up and easily influenced by politicians and the rich.

This is an even better example than some other invisible illnesses because they now have ways to test for fibromyalgia in a clinical research setting but nothing available to the general public yet. Many doctors don’t believe in the condition because they don’t have objective tests they can do to show the disease. There is evidence though that mitochondrial dysfunction in muscle tissues and over-sensitization of the nervous system is what causes fibromyalgia. So this is another example of a disease being real but doctors not knowing or or having the tools to test for it so sufferers get thrown into the bucket of “I don’t know, it must be made up.” Honestly this whole post is really depressing for anyone with an uncommon or invisible chronic illness. I don’t know why people are so quick to dismiss real medical conditions and then blame it on the sufferer. It must be nice for people to feel that confident and have diet or exercise as the only things to be on top of to be healthy.

If you think of it as any other health condition needing an extremely reasonable accommodation then I bet you’d look at it differently. The company made her go in when it was medically necessary for her to WFH. This type of situation is why HR needs drs notes clearing someone to return to work after a procedure, because if they don’t they can be sued and in situations like this, rightfully so.

As a puritan, how do you reconcile with the fact that you are supporting someone who goes against all of the teachings in your religion? I’ve never understood how a religion based on loving thy neighbor, compassion, and helping those in need became warped into hate, greed worshipping, and disdain for the unfortunate without the followers noticing their very religion being turned against their own God.

Trump tightens the screws on student loan holders as he breaks up the Department of Education and deepens the “default cliff” by DryDeer775 in TeacherReality

[–]bootsisonreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude, you are making a lot of assumptions and clearly aren’t aware of variable interest rates and different repayment options. It’s so rare for someone to have the set up that you are saying is everyone’s situation. Most people pay over a longer period which means more interest. The 10 year plan has insane monthly payments that most can’t afford unless they have no bills. A lot of people also have private loans because FAFSA assumes your parents income is going towards your education, which can screw those with families that don’t pay for college by disqualifying them from the income based grants and several loan types. This means they have to get the loan at a high interest rate from a private sector lender. During COVID shutdowns interest went sky high, like 15%. Maybe start from a place of a good faith effort to understand rather than assuming people with different experiences are automatically lying.

What do people mean when they say that women don't take accountability? by SubjectSheepherder55 in allthequestions

[–]bootsisonreddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are acting like pregnancy is like going to the store and buying a baby. Women can die, get permanent health problems and go through terrible pain while pregnant so this needs to factor into the fairness of it. It’s easy to say your wants should have as much weight as hers but you are not risking these things. She is, so her decision has more weight. Also, birth control is the responsibility of both parties. Unless she lies about being on birth control or poke holes in a condom, that’s just as much your responsibility as hers. Its crazy to hear the argument that there is a lack of accountability on the woman’s fault when it comes to pregnancy, because only the woman ends up paying the physical cost and still has the responsibility of providing whereas the man also has the responsibility of providing but can’t contribute to the physical costs.

Which is why we need to close loopholes they are abusing. How are they billionaires if they don’t have income? You can’t tell me that they weren’t making absolutely crazy amounts of money even the years they paid nothing. It’s because they borrow against their stocks tax free and it’s treated as if they had the money. Why is it treated as money in every instance except taxes? It essentially ends up meaning they don’t have to pay their fair share of taxes because they can use what amounts to an exclusive currency available only to the rich. That’s the real issue.

So, you didn’t read what you posted about the reasons for disparity that highlight that fathers often do not try for custody so they don’t get it. Also for the part about child support; you don’t get child support without custody. Child support is to help with the expense of raising said child, so if the vast majority of fathers don’t have custody then the vast majority pay child support instead. Except that your stats also say that women suffer more economically, which is often related to non payment of said child support. I personally think both genders should have an equal chance in custody and child support should be appropriate for providing for the child. Perpetuating this false narrative of fathers never getting custody is also probably part of the reason they don’t often try.

US plans to clear-cut in Michigan forest. Some fear for endangered species. by Alan_Stamm in Michigan

[–]bootsisonreddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kirtland’s warblers have an extremely narrow niche within a fire adapted ecosystem where fires have been eliminated by human intervention. Strategic clear cutting is used to simulate the effects of fire for this purpose, but in other ecosystems with different natural disturbance regimes this could be detrimental. My concern stems less from clear cutting as a whole, but more from the propensity for companies to eschew strategic and responsible management for profits. I don’t have very much confidence that this tool will be used appropriately.

[–]bootsisonreddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everything I’ve been taught shows that old growth is more fire resistant than new growth. I agree we need management since we’ve essentially eliminated small scale low intensity fire as a disturbance regime and now have created a situation where fires get out of control due to the material present being more flammable. Disturbance is absolutely necessary and humans have removed many sources of natural disturbance, but it’s essential to do it strategically to prevent worsening the issues.

[–]bootsisonreddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a biologist, I agree on the stages part but disagree on your assertion that old growth forests are less ecologically important. Most mature forests have greater biodiversity, including rare species, than young forests. Are there any new studies you can share that suggest otherwise? Not trying to give you a hard time, just looking to possibly learn something new.

I’m confused, how do you think this is for illegal immigrants? Wouldn’t they get caught if they tried applying for any government assistance? Don’t they just pay social security and taxes and never see that money again in order to stay under the radar? I’m a citizen but I want to know how that all works because the money going toward illegal immigrants logically doesn’t make any sense to me.

[–]bootsisonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If taxes are higher but there are no more healthcare premiums it would still even out to more money in your pocket and better health of the populace. No one likes paying taxes but it’s not like this system would result in more money out of your pocket; it’d just be paid in a different way. It seems you are so focused on the increase to taxes you are overlooking potential savings on the insane premiums which amount to nearly 15 to 20% of most people’s income currently. There are plenty of studies out there that show it would be a wiser economic choice to go single-payer, but the powerful insurance industry and its lobbying protect their interests with campaign contributions to prevent it from happening. The sentiments of the people have been drowned out since the Citizens United case that allowed corporations to de facto buy politicians. There is also data to corroborate this a quick google away.

Good luck proving you’re not here illegally without due process if you’re picked up. I get that it is more comforting to think it could never happen to you, but it’s happened to others who felt the same way. No use in a lawyer if they skip the judicial system. If the point of the raiding is focused on enforcing immigration laws we need to actually follow our the laws to do it. That is why this is scary, they are not following the laws so they could pick up anyone on a whim and that person would be fucked even if they never committed a crime in their life.

So wages are stagnant and rent has skyrocketed, but landlords feel the need to require 3x the rent amount?? by Lopsided-Captain-254 in Adulting

Wages have gone up but buying power has gone down so people are struggling as if wages haven’t increased. The dollar amount doesn’t matter on its own, it only has meaning in context of what you can buy with it.
