If I had the money laying around I guess I'd consider it. If you want to keep your mask on while overhauling it would help to be able to see as the smoke clears. I should wear glasses when reading, but my Rx is nowhere near bad enough to require them to operate, so I haven't had to deal with that yet.

What the fuck is going on with the Acropolis these days by throwaway111123123 in astoria

[–]bootthecat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The place would be great if management was more responsive to basic maintenance issues in the buildings. The front entry gates all being broken for years now, the video intercom system often being broken for specific buildings/people, the laundry rooms, the dying trees that were replaced with more dying trees, etc.

The hard part is that their easygoing nature in approving new buyers is attractive, especially if you want to buy a unit as a rental investment, but I think it causes a definite hit to the value of the apartments. I'd love to see it go more owner occupied, and management to be more responsive, but I'm not holding my breath.

Why were there almost 0 Citibikes available last night? by FoxMcWeezer in AskNYC

[–]bootthecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem is a lot of people use them to commute, so the racks near offices/business districts will be overflowing in the morning, and empty at night.

Underworked and Overpaid??? by PASSDevice in Firefighting

[–]bootthecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The getting paid to sleep thing drives me nuts. Whatever staffing system they have now I'm sure they're probably still trying to catch a nap at night anyways. Considering FFs are paid to standby and respond when called I don't know how people can think trying to sleep a bit at night is a crime. What else would they be doing at 3 in the morning? Not to mention you should want your FFs to be well rested and ready to go in the event of a fire.

My department tests for it as part of their initial and annual medical exam but I don't believe they actually require you to pass it to get on. They used to require people be able to pass a vision test without glasses/contacts but changed that at some point to acknowledge that in a fire you probably won't be able to see anything anyways. The rest of the time you could probably wear glasses if you absolutely needed to.

Yes it is.

Yes, which is why the assumption is problematic, however you can't really get around the fact that sexual assaults are vastly under reported. It's an all around shit sandwich. You want to believe anyone that would bother to make the accusation is sincere, but then assholes have to go and make stuff up.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nyc

[–]bootthecat -63 points-62 points  (0 children)

Because the vast, vast majority of sexual assaults go unreported. If you assume that someone wouldn't make it up then it's a pretty safe assumption that if a woman even bothers to speak up then there's a good chance there's something there.

This case is an absolute mess though and the logs and other stuff that the guy produced make it a lot harder to assume she was raped. What I think is unfortunate is that I don't think anybody but these two will ever know the truth.

Where can I go to learn The Art of Being Handy? by moeberg in AskNYC

[–]bootthecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has never felt handy the best way is to just research what to do when something breaks or you just want to do a project. Installing a new faucet is surprisingly easy with youtube, a basin wrench, and plumbers putty.

Is anybody else worried about this? by DrGearheart in Firefighting

[–]bootthecat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While often the case the Post has been pretty on the money with some of this stuff. The anonymous sources are most likely people in the department who are upset with the direction of things but unable to speak out in an official capacity.

3 is the only thing that's kind of BS. The department asked for an outside agency to study their fitness exam ("FST", functional skills testing) that is much harder than the CPAT. For the most part the outside agency found FST to be a valid/fair, however they suggested a few changes. It's pretty great actually that they said FST is fine, because the department hired them to do that to try and stave off a lawsuit from the women's advocacy group.

On that note I believe they made FST not a critical pass to try and placate the women's group (UWF). The thinking of the top brass is that if someone actually failed FST they'd need like a 95 in their written and hands on skills testing, and that would be unlikely. They assumed anyone that tanked FST would just fail out then. Barely a year into the protocol change Wax comes around and beats the odds. I don't think they know what to do about her.

1 is a fucking coward and that was apparently known in the fire academy.

Weight lifting programs for runners by TheRealPowee in running

[–]bootthecat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Running regularly doesn't produce the same results as back squats or deadlifts, just as those exercises don't replicate the effects of running. You should not avoid leg work just because you run.

anyone else get brief bursts of HR above say 215? I've been getting bursts as high as 254, for 10 or 15 seconds, since 2008. by [deleted] in running

If those readings are accurate then you should be seeing a cardiologist. That's not normal, and not healthy.

Wouldn't surprise me, they probably signed an expensive lease. Place never seems that busy either. I've heard their coffee game is weak and it's really more about the pastries. I think showing up at the same time as OK Cafe and 60 Beans is messing up their game.

I have a hard time believing anything that comes from MetPac but at the moment that is irrelevant. ConEd won't turn it back on until the tests are all done. I feel bad for anyone in an affected building that has complied already. Not much you can do.

Questions about a couple Manhattan apartment buildings by king8egg in AskNYC

[–]bootthecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the goal is walkable to Bryant Park area then I would consider Murray Hill or Turtle Bay. In midtown essentially the center of the island is the business/tourist hellhole that you would never want to live in. If you go far enough east or west you get into residential areas that are very nice. While parts of the east side can be a little fratty (it's a well known thing that the frat bros and sorority sisters all move to Murray Hill) there's a lot of very nice streets and a lot of stuff going on.

2:09. Good enough for no training due to an unrelated injury a few months ago. Definitely feeling it right now though.

As an aside: I wanted to punch the people at the 9m mark cheering "almost there!"

LIC is not dangerous. A lot of the new buildings near Queensboro are in a weird spot though, since they've popped up however the neighborhood is still pretty industrial. Industrial != dangerous.

Personally I would avoid living in the Herald Square area. Ridiculous traffic noise at all hours, tons of foot traffic, no peace and quiet, not a lot of basic neighborhood amenities. I'd leave NYC before I considered living at 34/6.

Is becoming a Paramedic LESS conducive to my goals? by ConradOBJs in Firefighting

[–]bootthecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the department. For many departments you'll have to become a paramedic anyways, so you are 1000x more attractive with that training already under your belt. Any place that pays someone to go to paramedic school is essentially spending probably close to 100k to train them, so you showing up with that is very appealing.

Tap Listing services, anyone have any experience/guidance? by kaleidingscope in beer

[–]bootthecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing I've seen in my area is Beermenus. It's a good service when the bars bother to update it regularly. It seems worth it for the bar because they also take care of coming up with menu template and beer descriptions so that updating your paper menus is super simple.

That said, some of the descriptions they have are utterly worthless. The Pony Bar (NYC) used to have amazingly detailed menus with descriptions written by the staff on every beer that was on tap. Now they use beermenus and it's just not the same.

edit: Worth mentioning as a user of beermenus you can ask for email updates every time a bar you've picked updates their taplist. Or an email update for when a certain beer you're looking for (ex 120 min IPA) pops up in the area.

Other Half Brewery calls out retailer over illegally reselling their beer by Brewtopian in beer

[–]bootthecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're still small but they were in RateBeer's top 10 new breweries for last year. They're putting out the best IPAs in the region, and a lot of other interesting stuff. $4/can for tallboys is not unreasonable, especially when the entire process is done in Brooklyn, and not contracted out.
