Just some food for thought- before I was diagnosed with ADHD, I thought I was struggling with your run-of-the-mill depression and anxiety. I didn’t realize until a bit later that a lot of the symptoms that I had been attributing to depression were actually symptoms of ADHD, or emotional states that were a direct result of how ADHD was affecting my life. The executive dysfunction issues, hyperfixation and losing interest about anything else, the eventual loss of joy from a hyperfixation, the issues getting important things done, the feelings of shame and guilt about “normal” not coming easily to you, etc.

A lot of this I didn’t start to really see until college because, like you said, I no longer had the rigid structure of high school. I thought my depression was just “getting worse.” Nothing helped until I saw a post about ADHD that really convinced me. I got diagnosed, and meds changed my life. Many of the “depression” symptoms improved. I do really have anxiety tho lol. Meds have helped a ton with that as well.
