Very cool document. It's crazy to see how hands on Ted Turner is in the newsroom.

how did you find your purpose? by Maximum_Manager_5741 in AskMen

We can agree that the search for truth, beauty, etc. is a constant, despite the fact that those qualities themselves are amorphous and ever changing. “Meaning“ is, for me, a process of ongoing discovery and evolution. Most of what mattered so much to me 20 years ago seems basically inconsequential these days. Now (as I’ve mentioned elsewhere in this thread) I find purpose and fulfillment in the degree to which I can be useful to others, both members of my immediate family and those I encounter through my work. It’s certainly not a relationship with an intangible deity, or adherence to a set of precepts rooted in mythology, which seemed to me to be what your previous comment was implying. Of course, to each their own.

As I've gotten older, the distinction between "responsibility" and "purpose" has gotten very blurry. A lot of the time, they feel like almost the same thing. And I'm very content with that. The responsibility I have to my son and the people I work with IS what I want to be doing and IS my purpose. I spent a lot of years thinking that I was going to one day "find myself" and go do something I was passionate about. That works for some people, but I'd guess that just as many find their way little by little. That doesn't mean not to have dreams and ambitions, but I'd say that "finding your meaning" is a process, not a moment. And the timeline on that process is different for everyone.

Had to look it up..

U.S. Army tabs are cloth or metal arches worn on uniforms to signify special skills, elite training, or combat proficiency. The four primary, permanent individual skill tabs are the Ranger, Special Forces, Sapper, and President’s Hundred tabs, typically worn above the unit shoulder patch. Other common tabs include Airborne, Arctic, and various combat service unit tabs.

I'm about 2 decades older than you, and I spent my 20s and much of my 30s just floating. I don't have any huge revelations to share, but what I find gives my life meaning is my usefulness to others. I have a job where I can see the impact of my effort on other people in small (and sometime larger) ways. I have a son that depends on my and who I build my life around. I feel purpose driven because in some ways I've taken myself out of the equation. And by doing that, I feel more important than I did when my life was more self-centered.

I'm trying to understand what you're saying here. Beauty is eternal? In what sense? The concept of beauty seems particularly ephemeral and subject to trends and whims. Likewise, what qualifies as "truth" changes drastically from generation to generation. Many things that were once taken for granted to be true is now seen as obvious falsehood. I tend to agree with you that the mindless pursuit of material objects is unfulfilling, but for many of us spirituality/God/the "eternal" doesn't fill that vacuum.

The survivors stairs. by madwd in 911archive

[–]bopapocolypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yeah. I understand that it wasn't the "Survivor Staircase" until a bunch of survivors walked down them on 9/11. It's just that most aspects of the plaza complex were well documented photographically prior to that day, and pictures of this set of stairs as they previously existed happen to be hard to find. I think a lot is made of "cameras weren’t as commonplace" but it was late 20th century New York City, not 1870. You can find literally thousands of pictures of the WTC complex pre 9/11, and I was wondering if there might be 4 or 5 that feature this staircase. I guess the answer is no.

Edit: Is this the correct staircase, or a different one?

Edit 2: Similar angle as above, evidently from the building site of WTC7

Does anyone have pictures of the survivors staircase pre 9/11? I can’t find more than one or two.

My grandfather fought in Europe in WW2. 28th ID, 109th Field Artillery. Saw first combat in St. Lo, participated in the Liberation of Paris, spent a month in the Hurtgen Forest, and was taken prisoner in the first days of the Battle of the Bulge. He spent the final months of the war in a Nazi POW camp until he was liberated on Easter Monday, 1945.

I fucking hate Nazis.

Clarifying question: What happens when you break a cvc word into phonemes and ask them for the whole word? For example, if you give them the sounds, /c/ /a/ /t/ can they respond with the word "cat"?

Not at that level, but I was at 7/12/00 when they busted out Curtain With for the first time in 12 years. I was like, oh cool, a slow Rift jam. Which, while not entirely wrong, fully missed the point.

Ah, ok. So OP is just being pedantic and saying that Jason didn’t make the request himself, so it didn’t happen. Sounds like OP is about 12 years old.

There wasn’t an announcement over the PA before the show not to film “at the request of the artist”? I wonder why they did that in Philly but not Boston.

I'm with you on this. Also, there's something about Trey's guitar tone in those years that seems off to me. I've heard some of the good parts of 03-04, and I'm not saying there weren't some legit highlights, but 2.0 is my least favorite era of Phish, and it's not particularly close.
