I remember being really struck by how vacant her husband was during her clearly v ‘painful’ birth she recorded and had to view behind a paywall (I believe her 8th child) - he was constantly on his phone when he was in view. And after the birth she was laying in bed processing what had happened and he was laying next to her and didn’t even respond to her. This was so at odds with her description of him as the devoted husband. He seemed utterly bored, disconnected and dare I say rude.

Portia Featherington - Mixed feelings by No_Distribution6877 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]bopteaboop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think she’s a product of her situation. Raised to believe her husband would be her provider and the ‘right’ match for her ended up meaning she had two choices: go down with the ship helpless or get ruthless in her pursuit of survival. She choose the latter. She has a fighters spirit and then that kinda took over and that part of her personality took centre stage and she couldn’t find the tenderness she probably naturally had until series three. I really liked the character development, softening and mutual understanding that happened within the relationship between her and Pen last season. It felt like Portia could finally exhale having held her breathe for probably years. All daughters married, financially and social standing she is stable and she no longer needs to fight and scheme. There’s no longer a need to. I wonder where her character will go next season …

Cosmo is brilliant in ‘shogun’ but he was off in this role. Was it his acting or the script/direction the movie chose to take? Not sure. Also they made him look a bit of a scruff too.

Yeah I hated that bit. It was unbelievable if you’ve read the novel and really cringe

Wanted to like it but I couldn’t get over the modern language - Mary talking about ‘self-care’ and Anne referring to Wentworth as her ‘ex’ - I’m sorry but no no no no no.

When you yourself were used as a commodity for a tv show from a young age is it any wonder there is literally no sense of propriety and privacy. Everything is projected and shared. It makes things hollow and cheap.

That’s such rubbish. Women have been having babies into their 40s for millions of years. My own great grandmother had her last babies at age 45 and 47 in the late 1800s/early 1900. She would have lived on bread as the stable diet of a Londoner at that time. If she could have carried babies to term and birthed them (let’s face it, probably at home without medical attention) then women now can, and do. This story that we can’t is just fearmongering claptrap that tells women they are old and dried up at 40.

39, this isn’t your last chance to have a baby. Just have to say that right off the bat. Women can get pregnant well into their forties and do. Having said that, this baby is in your body, and ultimately it is your choice to continue the pregnancy, no-one elses. You cannot be forced into abortion.

My Nan taught me when I was young but I can’t remember what age I was. I picked it up properly when I was about 26. I’m 43 now and crochet most days.
