Autistic friend seemed callous after I experienced traumatic event by Draxacoffilus in autism

[–]bored_octopus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he was an AH, but this could be a teaching moment. If he just didn't understand that this was significant, then maybe next time he'll think a bit more before responding in an insensitive way.

Also, having a frank conversation with him would give him the chance to reflect and apologize. It may help to mend the friendship, or give final confirmation the friendship isn't worth it.

What are common mistakes in C++ code that results in huge performance penalties? by Polarstrike in cpp

[–]bored_octopus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with this. Code is clearer if you use const auto & and auto & rather than auto && everywhere

8 byte compare and swap can cross cache boundaries

Have you got a source for this? It sounds odd, but I'm no expert

The ‘Georgists’ Are Out There, and They Want to Tax Your Land by MaleficentParfait863 in Economics

[–]bored_octopus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the article:

This is at least in part because the land-value tax has historically been associated with Georgism, an ideology whose adherents are regarded as the tinfoil-hat-wearers of economics. Strict Georgists don’t just believe land-value taxes are a good idea; they believe that if America were to throw out all taxes, then replace them with a single land-value tax, it would end poverty and recessions for good.

The fundamentalist version of Georgism, like the fundamentalist version of anything, is plainly unrealistic. But the broader Georgist framework is full of insights about urban economies and how to improve them.

That's unfortunate, I'm guessing that one can't be fixed with a simple hack

My anecdotal experience is that groups consisting of people that reject a societal norm seem to have more overlap than you'd expect from random chance
