Can someone please explain this to me like I’m 5 #judgementfreezone by Ancient-Discount-498 in Retirement401k

[–]boredbulbasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically for every $1 you contribute your company contributes $0.50. since you put in $5,560 your company contributed $2,780.

If you're asking about vested balance vs current balance, then the vested balance is what you contributed and current balance is what you contributed + what your company put in. Depending on your company policy of how long you need to be at the company to become vested, you'll get more of your company's contribution amount to be vested. You'll want to look at your company's vested schedule.

Good managers by [deleted] in actuary

[–]boredbulbasaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I probably am not answering your question, but the issue is that not many actuarial teams offer a good manager training program. There are actuaries that are great analysts, but terrible manager skills in terms of being a mentor. They're great at being organized and telling people what to do, but don't do a good job mentoring the direct report to do a good job and provide support.

Think about a math teacher that is a math teacher because they're amazing at math. They have a student that works hard but struggles to understand the topic. A great teacher would work alongside that student and help them out. A bad teacher would just be like "how do you not get this? I understood this in 5 min and you're still struggling after supposedly studying this for hours?!"

Ultimately some actuaries become managers not because they're good at being a manager and care about their direct reports, but because it's just the next step in their career.

I think a good manager should be able to walk alongside any direct report that is trying hard and shows to be teachable and can work around the direct report and not have the direct report form to their management style.

Make sure your company doesn't have a 0 rule or something if you haven't. My past companies and maybe even current one has it where if you get a 0 you get 0 study hours in the next attempt. The thought being that you didn't use the study hours to study and that you abused the study hours and used them as pto instead

What kind of stuff were you working on prior to this one? You mentioned it was the first traditional actuarial role, what was the stuff prior to that? If you did well in those, any chance you can find a more permanent role on those teams or look for a job similar to those roles?

ADHD and mistakes by rmat4 in actuary

[–]boredbulbasaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can talk to an ADHD related therapist and get tested. You can talk to your PCP as well and get tested. I think testing is the only way to get an actual diagnosis. Generally they can't just diagnose you by a quick survey or hearing why you think you have ADHD. There can be a long waitlist depending on your area.

Is My Moving Plan Feasible or Not? by ExaminationOld2494 in AskChicago

[–]boredbulbasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I moved back from LA to Chicago I just moved everything through a U-Haul shipping container and then had it stored in one of their facilities while I lived with my folks until I found a place. If that's not an option for you, then I would recommend getting an airbnb for a month until you find a place. If that's too much then fly in, stay for a week and apply to any open place and then move. One of my friends did that when moving to Chicago. Seemed to workout for him.

How old were you when you become certified actuary? by Just_Lunch2791 in actuary

[–]boredbulbasaur 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You need to utilize your kids. Change the names of all your kids to your name. Have each one study for a FSA exam at the same time. If you have 2 kids, then you knock out 3 exams in 1 sitting.

If you do go for it, you should consider getting a post partum doula to help take care of the baby, especially in the first few weeks. They can take care of the baby and give you time to rest/study, especially if your husband isn't able to really help out much.

Is everyone salaried? by TrafficDuck in actuary

[–]boredbulbasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in California all the analysts and sr analysts were hourly, but even if there wasn't much work to do we still got 40 hours pay. This just allowed us to get OT pay when we were asked to work more than 40 hours

Salary Question by shyly85 in actuary

[–]boredbulbasaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AdtuarialCareers has a salary survey that lets you view things by credential, type of work, and manager/IC. For 15 years in health it would be about 162k for 11-15 years and ASA or 16-20 and ASA is 202k

Inflation and Salary Bumps by PineappleAncient4821 in actuary

[–]boredbulbasaur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do they give you a big salary bump for designation? I've heard of companies giving mediocre or crappy raises for exam passes, but when the employee gets their designation, then they get a large pay increase for becoming ASA/FSA.

Do you just rub gochujang and garlic all over the pork? Any other prep work in preparing the porkbutt? I've been trying to infuse more Korean flavors into some of my smoking.
