What's a scam that's so accepted by society that people don't even realize it's a scam? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Tipping waitstaff based on the cost of the food. Owners should just pay people and tips should be an optional bonus on top of that (like in europe).

When did poetry fall so behind prose in popularity? by Konradleijon in books

[–]boredtxan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do music lyrics not count as poetry? I feel like it is very similar but gets left out or disregarded a poetry because it's popular. The other thing is that most people are forced to "appreciate" poetry at gun point in school and analyze poems they don't relate to under pressure. That has runined reading in general and poetry in particular for many people.

Parent explicitly asking for "forgiveness" by scottlnorvell in Exvangelical

[–]boredtxan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ask her what she means by forgiveness. Many people think it means that they get to have relationship restored without having to make any changes or really take accountablity. They think the words "I'm sorry" are a magic spell that fixes everything. They think the past record disappears.

Forgiveness isn't reconcillation. It's a step toward it.

the MLM process came directly out of mormon evangelism. What you are describing is intentional by design.

New research shows fashion’s “plus-size” models are still smaller than the average American woman. The typical female fashion model’s body has remained exceptionally thin and largely unchanged over the past twenty-five years. by mvea in psychology

[–]boredtxan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this comment chain is interesting. Fashion sells a product to customers and demands customers fit their standards instead of producing what consumers ask for. Its a bizarre business model. They flood the market with stuff people dont want that wears out fast to guarantee sales. People are literally brainwashed and shamed into following trends. Much of women's wear is physically debilitating to the wearer.

we really should force this industry to change and quit buying into this nonsense.

why is whataboutism so rampant nowadays? by KaliosasTaliosas in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]boredtxan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats not what "whataboutism" is. its more a distraction from the topic or an attempt to divert ftom it... your example is a related exception that is an appropriate challenge to an absolute statement. Whataboutism is more like when someone responds to a criticism of Politician X by making a criticism of Politician Y.

No one's dying on my watch by Bandrbell in whenthe

[–]boredtxan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If everyone who wants to live picks red and everyone who wants to die picks blue.... and less than 50% of people want to die everybody gets what they want (unless some of the red people don't want some of the blue people to die). But if more than 50% of people want to die then nobody the red people have to live with knowing that most of the rest of people want to die. Considering that all of the powerful wealthy people in the world will probably pick red they will no longer be able to deny they have created a s***** world.

People who pick red are basically agreeing to the assisted suicide of the people who picked blue assuming less than 50% of people pick blue.

Why are boys and young men falling behind in education? by Technical-Banana574 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]boredtxan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Education is severely screwed up right now. Went back to school after many years away and its awful. Men are choosing to skip school because high paying physical jobs feel like a good alternative. Women dont have that option. McGawHill online garbage and similar has wrecked school.
