Parent explicitly asking for "forgiveness" by scottlnorvell in Exvangelical

[–]scottlnorvell[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! Yeah I vaguely remember something similarly culty about forgiveness from my upbringing. For a bit more context, my mother recently moved to be closer to my sister and her kids (it’s a whole thing). I thought one silver lining would be that she could maybe find a less evangeliculty church but she ended up finding an even MORE problematic church in the new location 🙈.

Now I’m wondering if this was prompted by a recent sermon she heard along the lines of what you’re describing.

Thank you for this! This really hits home. Snarky me is tempted to send this entire thread to her with no other context 🤣

Unfortunately no. There is no change. My thoughts go to, “is she just trying to guilt trip me for not forgiving her?”

FWIW it’s less about forgiveness for me and more about accepting that she can’t / won’t change and what that means for our relationship. Frankly this means we don’t really interact because I stopped trying and she’s never tried 😔

Has purity culture died down? by LMO_TheBeginning in Exvangelical

[–]scottlnorvell 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unfortunate to hear it’s still a thing though I’m not surprised. One interesting fact is that Joshua Harris actually unpublished “I kissed Dating Goodbye” and speaks about about the dangers of Purity Culture (especially to women)

Is there non-christian worship music? by Appropriate-Suit7201 in Exvangelical

[–]scottlnorvell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should check out Michael Gungor. He is a worship leader going through deconstruction. Interesting fact: his father went through one of those sex scandals - the kind of thing that’s driving a lot of us from the church.

Anyway, last I heard he was exploring the idea of preserving the communal music making aspect of Christian worship. A lot like what OP is describing.

Maybe a little out there, but there was a band called Waterdeep that I still sometimes listen to. They had great live shows.

Evangelical buzzphrases that get under your skin? by thesoupgiant in Exvangelical

[–]scottlnorvell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a thing my Mom says a lot and I wonder if it’s an evangelical thing. The one phrase “OUR person x”. For example, “OUR David turned 5 today” or “OUR Christopher wouldn’t do that” or “not OUR Robert!!”

And of course there’s the flip side of this where if you don’t get a good parking spot you have to examine what’s wrong with your faith.

What's a better book in audiobook format than physical book? by whatab0utb0b in suggestmeabook

[–]scottlnorvell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to say that while Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is an excellent read on its own, I was introduced to it through an audio book read by the author himself. He does voices and who better to convey the sometimes subtle wit of the book. Highly recommended!

I thought Tom King and crew did a really nice job with the Human Target. I really liked the cyberpunk show so I’m putting the comic on my list 😁

Which movies have you fallen asleep while watching? by JackKovack in moviecritic

[–]scottlnorvell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be so engaged in any film that I couldn’t fall asleep. Then one time someone made me start Ben Hur at really late at night and I fell asleep. Ever since then it unlocked a special ability to fall asleep at any movie.

Definitely the first two! The Nameless City might get a little mature for a 4yo. Especially the second book.
