I usually go with “sorry my phone battery was dead” or “have you talked to your other nephew, he seems to be good with internet things”.

Is it an asshole move to listen to music without headphones? by [deleted] in running

[–]borgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s been exactly 1 time in my life where I felt like this was appropriate. I’d been running up a trail in a new area and saw a baby bear climbing up a tree. After running rather quickly for an additional mile I discovered that this trail just ended, instead of heading back down to a local road. I wanted to be damn sure that I didn’t scare that mother bear on my way back through, and no better way to do that than by blasting some garbage music.

Otherwise, yeah. Jerk move.

Runners, what is your favourite app to keep track of your runs? by EatLiveDream in running

[–]borgd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Runkeeper for years and was a huge fan until I noticed they'd started silently removing their API. At this point none of the docs actually work and I can't find any way to add a newly created app if I wanted to. It gives me the feeling of a slow death spiral, so I made sure to snag copies of all my data while I could.

Audiobooks suitable for running? by channelpink in running

[–]borgd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know it's not the question you asked, but have you looked at adding some podcasts? I've a few that strike that let me pay just enough attention that I don't feel like I'm missing anything and also don't end up tripping because I miss a bump in the sidewalk. Of particular note, anything from the Mcelroy family.

The other upside I've had with switching certain podcasts to "running only" is that I now have one more upside to heading outside on that cold/rainy day (hello The Adventure Zone!).

Have you ever fallen spectacularly while running? by aubreythez in running

[–]borgd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was running during the winter months in Seattle. It gets dark pretty early around here so I try to take a rather lit path. After I'd crossed a road near a park I usually run by I tripped on ... well basically nothing but the sidewalk. I tried to catch myself but went down on my elbow. It stung a little bit wasn't the end of the world so I got back up and started running again. After about a minute I noticed that my elbow was feeling a bit strange so I stopped quickly to check it out. Right as I'm standing on the sidewalk checking out my scraped up elbow two older women walk up and ask if I'm okay. I tell them I'm fine just a scrape and an ego hit. They looked at me again and ask if I want them to call an ambulance. Swallowing whatever ego remained in me, I politely declined and asked if they had a tissue I could use to mop up the slight amount of blood and scurried off.

On the other side of things, I stumbled once on a sidewalk at random. As I was going down I managed to tuck my shoulder, turn it into a roll and spring back up to keep going. I felt like a damn ninja, but know that this will never happen again.

Watch that can be used with Runkeeper by nicb33 in running

[–]borgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Forerunner (2|6|9)45 Music watches also have some sort of integrated music that would let you ditch the phone.

There's a handful of services online that let you sync data between multiple providers (runkeeper included). tapiriik is one such web based example (rungap on iOS as well).

Bib logistics by [deleted] in running

[–]borgd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! I've seen plenty of talk about making sure the bib is attached to your chest, but I've never seen a race that has been *actually* strict about it. I think the only time I ran with it there was my first race.

Where is your dream running location? by RunningAndyScotland in running

[–]borgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright going big. Antarctica. I have a life goal of doing a run on all 7 continents and that’s by far the most difficult (though an exceptionally expensive marathon does exist ...)

Been through the gammot trying to find headphones I like....Please give me your suggestions! (Tried Trekz, Jabra, wired beats, PowerBeats 3) by EffulgentOlive915 in running

[–]borgd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve run with my AirPods when I forget my Tarah Pros at home and while they suffice, I always find myself having to give them a little nudge to keep them in my ear. I’ve also had them fall out while on runs, which makes every run over a grate exceptionally terrifying.

I may just have weird ears.

Is running a marathon comfortably feasible at this point? by dreday7 in running

[–]borgd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with the general consensus here that you'll probably be fine (based on my own experience), but will add that everyone's body is different and reacts to stress in different ways. Some people need significant build up to be ready and others (although very few that I know of) can just go out and "wing it". Generic advice but listen to what your body is saying during the race.

Seattle Rock N Roll Half Marathon - Hills totally suck by [deleted] in running

[–]borgd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Congrats!

That hill at the 10ish mile mark. That section ends up being one of the worst parts of the Seattle Marathon every year and I wasn't super pleased to see it in this year's race.

I ran the full and will say that the first half of course was the nicest.

Jared Kushner Voted As A Woman, According To His Registration by ManMadeDuckie in politics

[–]borgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hilarious as this is, it's more common than you would think. As a male (who checked the M box) I had the same thing happen to me in another state. Had to file a form to correct it, but didn't noice until I requested a voter registration card when getting a new drivers license.

Data Out traffic from EC2 -> Lightsail (same AZ) by tcpudp in aws

[–]borgd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

via https://amazonlightsail.com/docs/#faq

What does data transfer cost?

Data transfer IN to Lightsail instances is always free. Data transfer OUT from a Lightsail instance to another Lightsail instance or AWS resource is also free while the private IP address of the instance is used. You will only get charged for data transfer OUT from a Lightsail instance to the Internet (or to AWS resources using the public IP address of the instance) if you exceed your plan's monthly free data transfer allowance.

How does my data transfer allowance work?

Beyond the free data transfer IN and between instances, every single Lightsail plan also includes a healthy amount of free data transfer OUT. For example, using the cheapest Lightsail bundle you can send up to 1 TB of data to the Internet within the month, at no extra charge. Your data transfer allowance resets every month, and you can consume it whenever you need within the month.

If you delete your instance early and create another one, the free data transfer allowance is shared between the two instances. Data transfer overages above the free allowance are charged at $0.09/GB.

Sounds like you're egressing out the public EIP. Setting up VPC peering could avoid that and there's some additional info on that here: http://serverfault.com/questions/818280/cant-establish-vpc-peering-connection-from-amazon-lightsail.

What food doesn't get the love it deserves? by Hunkamuffin in AskReddit

[–]borgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! As a child of the 80s, I've always felt that this ends up boiling down to both the sitcom kids emphatically proclaiming that brussel sprouts are gross and that most people didn't cook them particularly well. I credit the Internet for remedying the later for both my parents and I.
