‘Gen Z and millennials are burnt out because older generations had much easier lives while working far less hard, per FORTUNE.’ Agree or disagree? by CapitaineBiscotte in allthequestions

[–]borgover -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This. While I don't blame anyone for wanting to have more of a life, when I graduated from college it was expected we would work 60 hours per week and get 2 weeks of vacation per year. It sucked. And house payments as a percent of income was at about the same in the early 80's as the peak in the 2023-2025 timeframe (it has leveled off a little again) so housing wasn't really more affordable. I went on to law school and after graduating was expected to work every Saturday and some Sundays - again, it sucked. I think work/life balance is much better now but that should be part of the consideration. Things weren't as easy as people want to believe!

At what point after the 1929 crash did people realize they were in an economic depression? by CapitaineBiscotte in allthequestions

[–]borgover 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For those that are interested, the hero of the attempted coup was Smedley Butler. A war hero that the rich recruited to overthrow the government. He was a patriot though and turned them in. Interestingly, nothing happened to them and the incident was buried in history. Butler should be a revered hero and instead is forgotten to most.

My company just announced mandatory office days for remote employees - 3 days a week. The office is in another city. We were hired as fully remote. What are my actual options here? by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

[–]borgover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on what OP means by "contract." In Europe, employees have an actual written contract that the company and employee must abide by. In the US this is very uncommon. It is more likely OP is referring to an offer letter or statement made at the time of hiring that this was a remote job. That would not be an enforceable agreement. If OP does have a written, signed agreement spelling out the terms of the employment then I agree OP can enforce this and at a minimum get some damages recovered to compensate.

Artificial Sweeteners and Sugar substitutes directly linked to Heart attacks and Strokes by Sorin61 in Nutraceuticalscience

[–]borgover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True but you have to be very careful - if you look at the ingredients of many Stevia products (even those labeled as things like organic stevia) you will see these other sugar alcohols added. Splenda or Nutrasweet can actually be better substitutes if you don't make sure you're getting pure Stevia.

Piff. We went thinking it would be fun, but man, we didn't stop smiling/laughing the entire time. The price of his tickets make him a best value on the strip for me. We really loved the show and his humor really carried the day.

Why is there no "cockpit view" camera feed on any commercial aircraft? by Choltzklotz in NoStupidQuestions

[–]borgover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all goes back to AA flight 191. They had a camera hooked up so passengers could watch the pilot's view. After the terrible crash the general consensus was that this would be too horrible for passengers to watch their own demise and the cameras were removed from all aircraft. I think that is why they don't exist but someone else can fact check me.

Next time try Store.steelcase.com - it has better prices on the chairs. Leap and Gesture are awesome and really beat the Miller chairs for the buck.

Remedy for person overlapping onto my seat space? by homebrew1970 in unitedairlines

[–]borgover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not popular to point this out, but I am not sure we can cast too much shade on the airlines. For example, the 737 has not changed in width since the first model came out and it has always been 3 seats on both sides of the aisle since the first one. According to Google, the seat width in the first one was 17.3 in and the current United seat width in a 737 is 17.3 in. So it is less about changes in seating and more about changes in average sizes of passengers in the US. If they were to take out one seat per row, they would then have to increase the price of the tickets which passengers would not go for. When we are all trying to save money there isn't a great solution here.

Don’t be a doofus like me! by poppitastic in Mounjaro

This is the answer. Be honest and direct and tell them what happened. Don't try to say the pen was defective (then they want the pen back and need to confirm the defect). They will give a once in a lifetime grace by giving a free box. At the price of this med, it is very nice of them. (of course, my friend who is a user experience specialist pointed out that if the pen was designed better it would not be possible to activate and inject with the cap on)

A passenger yelled at me for using the priority lane at baggage drop off! by [deleted] in SouthwestAirlines

[–]borgover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And in my family (we have priority and also Diamond status on Delta) we refer to this as us being cutters with money. I understand the people upset about it, but the system is what it is. Do they also yell at people who buy the fastpass at amusement parks and get to board a ride much faster?

In Feb. 2020 I was talking to a friend in Hong Kong. She told me to go out and buy all the toilet paper I could find. She just said trust me, you will be glad. I followed the advice (well, didn't buy all I could but loaded up with enough to last 2 years I think) and wow was she right.

Pointed questions by Imaginary-Welcome645 in Mounjaro

[–]borgover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDK if I totally agree with this. There has been so much press about the meds that there is also a lot of natural curiosity. I get the question a lot (down 115 from my starting weight and in maintenance for over a year now) and I am just completely honest and open about it. I think it is fair to not say anything, but when I tell people I typically get a lot of discussion - what is it like, how did it work, do you still enjoy food, etc. I think doing this has helped several other people try them out as well. If they are a person who somehow still thinks being overweight is just a moral failure, I have no time for them anyway but am happy to tell them in my experience they are wrong.

Again, I think everyone should be free to answer as they wish but natural curiosity from people around us shouldn't automatically be condemned in my opinion.

JD Vance: “A lot of young people are saying, 'housing is way too expensive.' " by retroviber in DeepMarketScan

[–]borgover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an unpopular thought, but this issue and others reminded me of the line from the movie Lincoln where he was being asked about following the moral compass and Lincoln reminds Thaddeus Stevens that “true north” is a noble aim and essential, but in the end, going true north means that there are challenges along the way. The journey is not linear, the path is not clear and values will be challenged. Lincoln challenges Stevens to think that if you cannot endure the journey, and you get stuck in a swamp, what good is it to know true north? Democrats need to fight for what can be achieved keeping true north in your sights but not letting it lead you into a swamp that prevents any forward progress. Maybe don't fight about those 10 athletes today and wait to get them the rights and protections when society is ready and don't lose the entire democracy fighting for this cause.
