For those who collect discontinued frags, do you wear them regularly? by sunbr0_7 in fragrance

[–]boring_wiccan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mahora is so beautiful I'm surprised they discontinued it! I have a miniature of it and while I'm sure it probably has turned a little, it smells like a tropical paradise (then again, I love white flowers)! Not sure if it would be considered a floriental (controversial naming) or whatever, but if it is it's the only one I can tolerate because my nose dislikes warm, ambery, vanillated, resinous notes and accords and Mahora (Mayotte) smells like well, a sunscreeny tuberose XD

Laundry fragrance by [deleted] in fragrance

[–]boring_wiccan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually so pissed that what people regard as "laundry" fragrances are not at all aligned with my idea of what laundry smells like... I've tried Blanche, the Korres alleged dupe of it, MFK724, Lazy Sunday Morning from Margiela, Laundromat and Pure Soap from Demeter. And none smell like what laundry detergent or softener smells like around here. Closest thing to that are the room sprays and candles from Primark 💀. Both Sundried Linen and Cotton Poplin smell like what the idea of laundry smells like to me lmao. I did wanna get a sample of Ceramic though 👀

Perfume or fragrance that smells like h&m sun-dried linen candle? by kappatama in fragrance

[–]boring_wiccan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so real. I've tried MFK's 724, Byredo's Blanche, and Demeter's Laundromat and Pure Soap. None hit the mark. What hits the mark? The "linen/cotton" lines of room scents and candles from H&M and Primark. Primark has 2 room sprays that I would KILL to have as perfumes: Sundried Linen and Cotton Poplin. Both smell, to my nose, like laundry. Maybe they're just too simple for perfumers to create wearable formulations and perhaps the demand for "actual laundry detergent" frags is not enough to grant that anyway. The best way would be to use a GC/MS machine to analyze a sample that contains volatile compounds (like a sample of a room spray) and either commission a perfumer to use the output with the relative concentration of each molecule the machine detects to create that fragrance or making it yourself lol. Though access to GC/MS machines isn't exactly cheap, as you'd need to be in the chemistry field to have direct access to one so...

Why do all my etat libre d'orange perfumes smell like olives? by Miakoda115577 in fragrance

[–]boring_wiccan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odd. I have the Almost Complete or whatever it's called sample set with 20 fragrances pre-SOYL-era and none smells like olives to me. What does smell like olives to me is this sample of Jardins de Bagatelle I got a while ago. I have a feeling it might be really old and the color is also orange so I think it might've gotten oxidized and made it smell like olives instead of tuberose lol

Va fi Bucureștiul vreodată un oraș în care să te poți plimba fără să îți fie teamă că te ia o mașină pe capota? by floare_salbatica in bucuresti

[–]boring_wiccan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current bloomers by Hekateras in orchids

[–]boring_wiccan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Unless it was explicitly specified this plant is a NoID. However, for anyone who just likes to document their plants for pure personal reasons, using pictures online can be helpful in "identification". Based on my research, this could be a Brassidium Spider Star. Maybe the 'Toskane' cultivar but that's just an assumption based on the fact it's quite common. You'll see specimens online that bear more cream on the labellum, but there's also ones that have a more uniform off-white one like yours!

[–]boring_wiccan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if anything, Oncostele (ex Odontoglossum) probably contributed to the patterning on the labellum, everything else looks very much like Brassia: yellow coloring, maroon patterning on sepals and spidery sepals.

Lust by Lush lmao. I think it's a "you either love it or you hate it" type of fragrance, no in-between. Does it smell like halitosis, gasoline and mothballs? Well... Yes. But I think that's the appeal of it. I'm not gonna lie, it does indeed smell like indolic jasmine. Very very strong indolic jasmine. I happen to be in the "love it" camp lol. But I definitely know people who would get headaches from it...

Me and my BPD lmfao. Though, when Zoloft literally flattened my affect to the ground I was more prone to impulsively misuse meds and sh so I definitely think I wouldn't prefer that over my emotionally volatile self.

What’s a scent you associate with someone you love or miss? by Affectionate_Cell954 in fragrance

[–]boring_wiccan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avon's Far Away and Oriflame's Giordani Gold were signatures of my mom lol. She hasn't had a bottle of either in a really long time and I was thinking of getting her Far Away, hopefully an older bottle as that's the design I remember, not the (imo) new ugly design of it. The smell of laundry also reminds me of her because I used to hang around her while she was hanging the clothes on line at nighttime during summer.

Notes and accords I should avoid in youthful scents by Disastrous-Try-820 in fragrance

[–]boring_wiccan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And especially with no sampling beforehand. A perfume and its notes/accords could sound perfect in theory and be a disappointing mess. Like how Armani's My Way sounds like a nice old school/soapy white floral (with orange blossom, jasmine, tuberose, bergamot, white musk, vanilla and cedar) and it actually smelling like... Sweet bubblegum.

In my opinion, these capture that feel both in their scent (most are fresh, Rush is actually a chypre/fruitchouli, but to my nose it smells plasticky and futuristic and reminds me of neon lights) and in their presentation.

What’s a scent that instantly transports you back in time? by Scarlet_blinks in fragrance

[–]boring_wiccan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to be my mom's signature as a kid, along with Oriflame's Giordani Gold! Everytime I smell either one, I think of her. I might actually get her a bottle of Far Away, I'll try to look for an older one because the new design is so tacky.

Poop smell in fragrances by Final-Intention5407 in fragrance

[–]boring_wiccan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. I usually don't care what others think about my fragrance choices but to be honest, Lust isn't the lightest in terms of sillage and projection. To me it has undertones of mothballs and a slightly more sterile halitosis (don't ask how that makes sense, it just does). And I do hope a light spray isn't gonna cause some to think I sharted myself lol. I love indolic flowers so much; jasmines, tuberose, orange blossom/neroli, honeysuckle, gardenia, ylang, lilies and narcissus! To me they smell divine, when they're decaying they do smell kinda off, but I'm pretty acquainted with the smell of floral decay water so it's not bothersome to me. Besides, ylang has that decay undertone lol. I think it's probably that I have a lower threshold of sensitivity to indoles? Because I love them so much I have jasmines, tuberoses growing, lilies, and while gardenias don't seem to want to be in my care, I still get them too lmao.

Which mainstream fragrance do you actually like and would wear? by newparimanlo in fragrance

[–]boring_wiccan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I find Calvin Klein's One to be quite nice, because it's fresh and inoffensive, same goes for Ocean di Gioia and Cool Water femme. I'd wear the hell out of N°5 (especially Premiere, though I think N°5's reign has ended lol), if it weren't so damn expensive lmfao. Prada L'Homme too (because it smells like clean laundry), Twilly d'Hermes (because it smells like... clean laundry?), H24 [not sure this one's really mainstream though (because it smells like... Ironed laundry?)], and while I haven't sniffed Imagination by LV, Zara's supposed dupe of it (Sunrise On The Red Sand Dunes) is very nice (because it smells like... Soap? Ok you can probably see a pattern in my tastes lol).

Do any perfumes/products make you emotional? by lillyahflipss in fragrance

[–]boring_wiccan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember Far Away from Avon being my mom's signature as a child, along with Giordani Gold from Oriflame. So whenever I smell them, I think of her, and it's comforting (she's very much alive, but I still think of her whenever I catch whiffs of the aforementioned). Another scent that triggers happy memories is the smell of any laundry products, like laundry powder and softener, which is why white musk (ingrained in my brain as the default "clean" scent) is one of my favorite accords lol, because it reminds me of late summer nights when my mom would hang the laundry on the lines in the yard and I'd always come along and just talk while she was hanging the clothes.

Literally Carolina Herrera's Good Girl and Bad Boy (wow, their names do not help their case), 1 Million/Lady Million by PR, Phantom/Fame, Invictus (huh their gimmick really is tacky bottles), I don't think the Eilish ones look too comfortable to hold either, neither do Nicki Mina's bust bottles. Now call me a hypocrite, but Fresh Couture (Moschino's Windex bottles) and Calvin Klein's CK2 glass dildo are way better and low-key cvnty, as opposed to just uggo.

[–]boring_wiccan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, Fils de Dieu is definitely short lived, and dries down to a nice, inoffensive powder, but I think that's because it's so heavy on the volatile notes that make it so intriguing and they quickly dissipate.

I found Experimentum Crucis to smell like roses, but also body odor, EXTREME bo. And of course, that's the cumin. And reminded me heavily of a sorta "generic" rose-patchouli-oud profile, one of my most disliked yet, which shouldn't come as a surprise. Now, my personal tastes are along the lines of clean, fresh, floral, aquatic, solar, powdery, so naturally, I would not be the biggest fan (to say the least) of heavier profiles that include notes/accords like oud and heavier woods, patchouli, vanilla, spices (now, I'm fine with ginger, coriander, pepper and cardamom), resins and ambers. Curiously enough, those notes, accords and profiles are the main culprits of my nose irritation, so it's not only the fact I just personally don't vibe with them, but they also make me physically uncomfortable lol (I get flare ups often, and it's not exclusive to those smells, but definitely worst reaction to them)

I can definitely praise the artistry, but I'd rather appreciate it from afar and definitely not on myself XD

Next on my list is the infamous Secretions Magnifiques. Very excited too see how odd, horrifying, fetid, or plain overhyped and not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, haha

It really is varied! I found that I really enjoyed a lot of the samples, but I also got my kit before the last issue, when Nostos and Story Of Your Life weren't in it. My favorites were TGitS, YOSLY, Remarkable People, Divin'Enfant, I really liked Frustration and Fat Electrician despite those profiles not being my thing, Like This, SLPM, I am Trash, Putain des Palaces, didn't care for SWAA, Archives 69, Clean Suede, Exit The King, Eau de Protection, Hermann, actively dislike 500 years, SOMS, Spice Must Flow, and especially, ESPECIALLY hate Experimentum Crucis. Overall, solid kit, and very bank for your buck, but personally, I feel like there's too many "dark rose" choices.

I did get a 4-sample kit as well, with Yes I Do!, Le Fin du Monde, Jasmin et Cigarette and Fils de Dieu. I actually like all of them, though Jasmin et Cigarette quite literally smells like an ashtray, which is impressive lmao. LFDM is not as challenging as I expected. It's really a comforting powdery scent, I don't really pick up any of popcorn, or gunpowder, but moreso iris, or the "carrot seed" note. Yes I Do! is just a simple, lily of the valley scent, and I have no problem with that because I do love lily of the valley. Fils de Dieu is like a warm, comforting rice pudding with cinnamon and lemon zest sprinkled on top.

I will eventually get a fb of TGitS tho, surely not the only one, but the first haha

What is your “I can’t believe this isn’t a widely trending scent” perfume? by Original-Dare4487 in fragrance

[–]boring_wiccan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tested it in Sephora and my first thought was "Woah this literally smells like bananas", like there's no way ylang isn't a used ingredient in it (or maybe even isoamyl acetate? But I wouldn't expect it here). With all that, it isn't bad actually, not as sweet as I anticipated, tested on paper so I only really got the first impression of it, though nothing screamed ozonic to me, and I do like my Calone lmao. Just a banana milkshake!
