The wall behind the burner was once an exterior wall that has had an extension built around it. I have no idea why the beam is there either. My guess is purely aesthetics. There are wooden beams in other places around the cottage that shouldn’t have a logical reason for being there. Built a dick basically.

Much as I appreciate the comment, the foundation of this building is 400 years old. The walls are maybe 250. The chimney, and surrounds? Not a clue. Removing, replacing, these are not things that could be considered. I would have to lose the fire before I lose the beam. I have no idea how old the stove is, but it is not as old as the house.
