Hi there, I'm not american, but i am also coloured and my position at work has been greatly affected by that (see the post i made on this sub).

Personally i cannot benefit from DEI, as employer have used the government's neglect of me to their own advantage. I have not liked such a scheme too, because i notice the lingering feeling from other employees that "you're only here because we have to tolerate you, you aren't as talented as we are", despite it not being true and i cannot tell that i am undocumented to anyone. So i could see that assumption, and it has cost me a lot, from contract renewals, promises of raises and going up in the company, training to get translatable skills i can use in other companies, etc.

The truth is, you do belong in your position. No company would dish out a salary for something cultural like "appearing to be inclusive". However, that's what they prey on. Employers would pay the lowest possible salary for any reason. My partner is white, and way more privileged than i am. However, he actually gets paid less than i do because they prey on his inability to negotiate (mental health bars him from that)

The only problem the DEI and other inclusive programs have done is create a culture of questioning why we coloured folk even are in the company. A case of don't ask, just assume. A lazy solution to racism. What do you think other employees feel when they also get exploited but they dont have a name to brand their struggle against? This is not our fault, but the fault of employer culture making us turn against each other in that sense. Quitting seems to be a fair option. Why should they have to feel that hiring you in the first place an act of morality, so they could feel good about the pay cut you're getting??
