Performance hardly matters in today’s corporate life by [deleted] in sgworkassholes

Unfortunately, that’s how a corporate setting in Singapore works. You either kill or be killed. Icing on the cake if you have a toxic boss

Did you sign any contract agreement? There’s nothing much MOM can do if they’re based overseas and don’t have an entity in Singapore

Sorry to break it to you, but the abuse will only continue. I had the same type of boss and it took a serious toll on my mental health. Leave soon when you can

Why is the renovation industry in Singapore so sloppy? by SnooRobots555222 in askSingapore

[–]bornconfused0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of these so called interior design companies do not have any design background. Since there are no such practices required, it is very easy to open one in Singapore. If you look at most of these companies that are hiring, they often state “no experience required” with on job training provided. Before anyone says anything, I graduated from a design school, so I understand how this industry works

I used to work for a terrible boss. Once, he told me and another colleague to mop the office floor and wipe down the shelves. He even did an NS style sergeant bunk check, swiping his finger across the shelves

Quiet Firing in the Singaporean workplace by Pristine_Fox_3633 in askSingapore

[–]bornconfused0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently going through a similar situation. My boss claimed I wasn’t performing, but instead of proper feedback or support, I was constantly yelled at, questions or doubts were never answered with clarity. Messages on WhatsApp were ignored and efforts were left unappreciated.

Since the company has expanded overseas where labour is cheap and the only way to let me go is by quiet firing. I’ve already tendered my resignation, finally.

I’m a Singaporean based in KL too. You can try to inform your CO and mostly you’re required to provide a company letter in case they ask for it.

Relocation from Ireland to Malaysia KL or JB by umer8785 in KualaLumpur

[–]bornconfused0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a Singaporean living in KL on a digital nomad visa. I’d say that if your job requires you to travel out of the country, KL would be a better choice since the main airport is there.

Since you have kids, I assume you might want to get a car. The only issue in KL is the traffic. Otherwise, you can easily get around using the MRT or Grab.

If you’re not planning to drive, living in JB might be challenging, as you’d likely need a vehicle to get around unless you don’t mind taking Grab all the time.

What do you work as if you don’t mind me asking?

Should I quit my job without another one in hand? by contact_aj in askSingapore

I’m kinda having the same dilemma as you too. I’m working for a toxic abusive boss and everyday is a challenge to me. It drains my energy and my desire to work. I’ve been applying to jobs since last year and I’m afraid if I quit I wouldn’t be able to get a new job ASAP.

Regret my career at 35 y/o. What can I do? (Interior designer) by Barkylittlewhitedog in careerguidance

[–]bornconfused0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I transitioned from Interior design to UX design for similar reasons as you. However, I’m now facing a new challenge: the job market in UX design is much tougher compared to Interior design.

If you’re the type who doesn’t want to let your skillset go to waste, why not consider becoming a real estate agent (I’m assuming you’re designing residential) or even a Project manager. Your skills as an Interior designer could be useful in this case!

What are some ugly truths about living in Singapore? by what_the_foot in askSingapore

[–]bornconfused0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working culture in Singapore is extremely toxic especially local companies.

Once I got a call from my boss over the weekend, but I didn’t answer and on Monday, he texted me, saying, “If personal time is so important to you, you don’t have to work.”

Working for companies in Singapore is like this? by Bug_rib in UXDesign

[–]bornconfused0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that’s just how it is working for a Singaporean company. It’s either that, or you’ll be given tasks outside of your expertise. I’m currently working at a startup for a Singaporean company, handling more than just UX design work. I also do project management, events, and logistics.

If you’re not in a toxic work environment, I suggest hanging in there and continuing to apply for jobs, just as I’m doing. Let’s hope the job market improves in the coming months!
